Which Hi-Def projector has the best lens shift?

tigergeek1

I want to buy a home cinema projector for my Xbox, but I don't want to go through the trouble of mounting it to the ceiling. I just want to place it on a table to the side of my sofa. Thanks in advance!

Answer
LCD projectors typically have the best lens shift (versus DLP models which didn't used to have the feature).

Panasonic PT-AX200U (720p) and Panasonic PT-AE2000U (1080p) are both good. Epson's Home Cinema UB is also good, but is new and costs more.

Good lens shift is about %50. So imagine the center of the image moving to about where one side was after it's moved over completely. Watch for one with both horizontal and vertical lens shift too.

For gaming, the Panasonic PT-AX200U is a good price and has a game mode too. Its the first projector to have a mode for gaming specifically. It's bright too, so you can use it with lights on.

what front projector screen size?

gandalf

The distance from sitting area to screen will be 11-12 ft. What is the maximum screen size I should get? I am getting a 1080p front projector for blu-ray movies if that helps.

Answer
The maximum screen size as well as screen performance depends on several factors, which include:

     ⢠The interior dimensions of your viewing environment;
     ⢠The placement of the projector (governed in part by the lens shift function (if so equipped) and the throw distance. The latter is dependent on the focal length and the zoom ratio of the lens);
     ⢠The post optimization and/or calibration light output of the projector;
     ⢠The peak gain of the screen;
     ⢠The resolution of the projected image;
     ⢠The (corrected) visual acuity of the viewer(s);
     ⢠The ability to control the amount of ambient light in your viewing environment;
     ⢠The video and image processing performance of the projector or outboard video processor;
     ⢠The performance of the video source equipment;
     ⢠The source material;
⢠And last but not least your budget.

You will want to choose a quality projection screen that is optimized for HD video projectors, which has an aspect ratio of not less than 16:9 and a peak gain between 0.9 and 1.4. Keep in mind that the higher the screen gain the narrower the viewing angle (aka viewing cone) before you hit the half-gain point. This will be important if you expect to accommodate up to several people in the room at any given time. You should also give consideration to using a gray, high contrast screen if there will be any ambient light present during viewing. You will also want to use a black velour or velvet screen frame finish or masking, i.e. border, that absorbs over-scan, which helps to increase perceived contrast.

Realistically there are few consumer-oriented video projectors under roughly US$10,000 that will allow youâeven under the best of conditionsâto project a (16:9) HD video image larger than 120 inches diagonally while maintaining a sufficiently bright, reasonably uniform image that possesses good contrast and minimal color shift over a viewing angle of more than 50 to 60 degrees.

At a viewing distance of 11 to 12 feet, for one or more viewers possessing normal visual acuity viewing a 1920 Ã 1080p video image of good image quality, you will want to use a 16:9 (or even a 1.85:1) aspect ratio screen with a diagonal size of approximately 84 to 90 inches give or take no more than roughly 6 inches; providing your projector and room dimensions will accommodate a screen size in this range. (Note: using a native 1920 Ã 1080p âFull HDâ DLP or LCOS video projector will allow you to fudge a little toward the higher end of the screen-size range. If youâre using a Full HD 3LCD video projector you should limit yourself to a slightly smaller maximum screen size, e.g. no greater than 90 inches, especially if there will be any ambient light in the room.) For a brief list of the more popular projection screen manufacturers please see my answer to the Yahoo! Answers question titled âWhat is best screen for Optoma HD80,â to which Iâve provided a link below.

I strongly encourage you to use the popular interactive Projection Calculator Pro utility on ProjectorCentralâs Website to verify which screen size, screen gain and projection variables will provide the best performance for your viewing environment. Just remember that the reported Image Brightness value is based on the projector manufacturerâs often exaggerated and unrealistic brightness or light output specification.

Im building a Home Theater, Wondering what projector would be a good one, i have a 100inch screen?

raj58802

I currently will be getting a stewart film screen around 109 inches. i dont know of any other companys that make film screens if you have any other options would like to know. also want to know what is a good projector for about 3000 dollars

Answer
Da-Lite makes screens of good quality, but Stewart Filmscreen is considered the best, but they cost more. You will probably go for a fixed-pixel projector, so consider the Greyhawk or Firehawk, which are designed for those. These screens are low gain, and as a result provide a very wide viewing angle and enhance the dark areas of the image.

For a screen that size I would definitely consider a true 1080p projector such as Sony's SXRD. http://www.ultimateavmag.com/videoprojectors/1205sony/ It has received outstanding reviews for picture quality. However, it is much more than $3000.

You may be able to find good DLP projectors for less tjhan $5000. I prefer the Sharp projectors, see http://www.projectorcentral.com/sharp_z2000.htm So far, DLP front projectors in a reasonable price range are still 720 lines. (Before you buy a DLP projector, make sure you don't see "rainbows" when your eyes scan across the screen.)

Go to the AVS forum http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/ and look under digital projectors (two categories: under $3500 and above $3500). See what critical users are saying. If you can possibly boost your price range a bit, try to get into that latter category.

A good home theater projector?

ThatOneGuy

I would like to buy a projector to project tv/movies on my wall instead of having a tv. what is a good projector to buy and what are some of your experiences from using a projector as a tv? what kind of things should i look for when buying a home theater projector?

Answer
Honestly a decent front projector and screen is not cheap and if budget is a factor then a direct view HD 1080p display is a better option. There are allot of cheap projectors on the market and really produce a very poor image.

So the key is budget and size image you should have for viewing distance.

15 feet or closer then direct view TV is better choice. Its helpful to understand that the larger the image the more flaws it will show in the program material. So its not fun to watch poor video from TV broadcast or dvd on a large screen it only makes the image look worse. But on the other hand when watching high quality program material on a big screen it gives a much more involving and life like experience.

If you don't have at least $2500 on a front projection system and screen, I would suggest against going front projection and going with a good direct view 1080p HD TV.

which projector should I buy?

Q. I need a projector to show power point presentations as well as movies. I need to use the projector in day light as well as in closed rooms. I do not have a big budget. Could you please help in deciding which one to buy? Thanks in advance.

Answer
Projectors can be classified various ways (e.g. by primary use, by resolution, by technology). Almost all projectors will readily accept a computer input.

I'm not going to try to recommend a specific model since you need a brand/model locally available and supported.

You need one with emphasis on brightness, portability, and secondarily contrast ratio and resolution.

A low budget (prices start at about $500) precludes higher resolution projectors, and tends to push you toward a DLP based "business" projector. Given your wish to use it in a lighted location you also need brightness (2000 lumens minimum).

See the link for some popular choices. Prices will be in the $700+ range for most. Look at the lower resolution models first since they will be a bit less expensive. Note this sight has many reviews, a database of available projectors, information on projectors, etc.

Hope this helps.

Projector buying!?

pieman_21

Dose anyone know where i can get a computer projector for under £50.00! Second hand, refurbished i dont mind.

Please help!

Answer
I would try e-bay

Beware of cheap second hand projectors because they may require a new projector globe, these globs are usuraly very expensive. The globe in my projector blew a few months ago a new projector was $1300 and a new bulb was $950 so I was better off to get a new projector. This can easily blow your budget so be very careful

Look at one of these

I am not shure of the condition of the globe is like, you should check before bidding

It needs an RCA input so you would need to get an adaptor for your laptop to convert the VGA plug into an RCA but it is in good working order

Home theater projectors?

assassinat

Hi All!

I'm looking to buy a home theater projector and get off of television once and for all.

I'm looking to spend about $1000, and a used one is ok. I'm looking for quality of picture, how well it works with the lights on, and reliability.

Thanks!

Answer
In general projectors -- like most TVs -- give the best picture in a dark/dim room. If you leave lights on contrast suffers and the "pop" is reduced. That said, bright projectors (which unfortunately also mean you risk shorter lamp life) will work (particularly with a suitable screen) to give a good picture even in a moderately bright room.

I commend you on proposing to replace your TV as the primary display --- it's the best way by far to get a big picture and get an overall movie (or HDTV) watching experience that can even beat a movie theatre. Although ... it's worth noting that keeping a small TV is probably advisable for watching the news or things that don't warrant turning on a projector.

This is because lamps in projectors do wear out (Typically they last 3-4000 hrs) and cost $300 or so to replace. The life of the lamp is maximized if on/off cycles are minimized (particularly short cycles and if the lamp isn't allowed to cool properly). See the 1st link on maximizing lamp life.

Now to projectors. Since needs vary widely I'm going to reference a list of recommended home theatre projectors (2nd link). Many are outside your price point, but there are some that fit your budget. Do some reading on this (and other sites, such as projectorreviews.com) to learn more before you make a decision.

Hope this helps.

is buying a projector screen worth buying?

HalpME! :D

I'm interested in buying a projector and possibly a screen for it, but is it worth buying? Is the quality much better?

Answer
A screen is not needed if the projector has a high light output (lumens). Just make sure the wall color is white and not glossy. Flat white is best and satin will work. A projector screen will improve the picture as the light is captured onto the screen and the crystals on the screen hold onto the light, but like I said, if the projector is bright enough, you'll be ok.

Screens can limit the picture size, sway with breezes from fans, may not be attractive to the room unless they rise or drop from the ceiling (which can get expensive), and get damaged.

I do have a screen because the paint in the room is glossy white and the reflection from the lamp is noticed when viewing the picture. A screen will not produce a glare. Overall , yes the picture will appear clearer and the whole picture will be even in color and brightness. The wall will "bounce" the image, while the screen will capture it and display it without the glare.

what is good resoulution for a hd projecter and is the 2000 LUMENS LCD HD VIDEO PT-LB51U PROJECTOR good?

mainkeegan

Answer
Yes and no. Let's look at this in a bit of detail.

HD means 720 or 1080 resolution, and in projector terms "true HD" is 1080p (1920x1280 pixels, 1080 horizontal lines, progressive).

There are essentially three resolution 'classes' of projector (1280p ($2500+), 720p ($1000+) and sub-720p (<$1000).

If you are looking to make business presentations (e.g. Powerpoint) or gaming a sub-720p projector is fine. But for home theatre you really want a 720p or 1080p model.

Now, brightness is used to indicate whether you can use the projector with ambient light present (or have to use it in a darkened room). 2000 Lumens is a fairly bright projector ... but typically this is the maximum brightness, and when adjusted for home theatre use will be much less. That said, many 1000 lumen projectors are plenty bright enough for use in a darkened room on 100" screens. So, bright is useful to have, but the best picture is always in a dark room and too much brightness can be as bad as not enough.

The Panasonic PT-LB51U is a business class projector. The 1024x768 resolution means it projects an image with an aspect ratio (width to height ratio) of 4:3 ... not 16:9 common today for widescreen movies). This is not bad ... in fact if you favour old movies it can even be an advantage ... but it means that if you project widescreen movies you don't use some of the 768 vertical pixels (they are used for the black bars). So this is a slightly sub-720p projector (although it will accept a 720p or 1080i input, it will have to interpolate this to the available pixels).

The 400:1 contrast ratio is poor. It means that the picture will be somewhat flat and lifeless. For HT use you want a minimum of 2000:1.

The hidden weakness with this projector is likely to be the video processing ... since it's not designed for HT use it is likely poor.

Finally at $800-$900 this is not a great buy for HT.

Have a look at the recommended models at the link ... you can get a true 720p HT projector for about the same price as this Panasonic. In fact the Panasonic PT-AX200U is one of the best 720p projectors out there ... and sells for $1300.

So bottom line, the projector you identified may be a fine business projector, but for HT use it would be borderline ... and you can do better for the price.

Hope this helps.

I was thinking of buying a not-very-expensive "Zoom Box-type" projector. Anyone have any suggestions?

oscar

Looking for a step up from Zoom Box toy, but not wanting to pay with an arm or leg. What's in the ballpark?

Answer
That projector looks horrible and cheap. It only has RCA composite video, which blown up to 60" will look like crap. I have an HD projector and when I first hooked up my PS2 to hit with just regular RCA jacks (composite video...the yellow plug) it looks horribly pixelated and soft on a focus. My screen is 115" so you can see every little pixel blown up. Then I did some research and got component cables for 20 bucks and the picture was 10 times better.

You can get an HD projector for less than a 1000 bucks, which is cheaper than most HD tvs. I have a Mitsubishi HD1000U, which is a native 720p projector with a contrast ratio of 2500:1 and 1500 lumens and it has HDMI, component video, SVGA, S-video, and regular composite video. It was 899 with free shipping from projectorpeople.com. The Mitsubishi won the Editor's Choice Awards for ProjectorCentral.com.

Right now, I watch movies with my HD-upconvert DVD player on a screen that 115" and it's true widescreen and the picture is very clear. I also play my Xbox and PS2 on that same screen and it's amazing.

Getting a projector is a lot of work to set up. You can't watch it during the day because the room has to be pretty dark. I also suggest either buying or building a screen. Screens cost anywhere from 200 to 1000 bucks, you can build one for less than 60 that works just as good if not better. I wouldn't just project the image on a wall unless you just painted it white and there are no holes from pictures or any flaw you can notice, because it will bug you when you're watching a movie. I built one and it was pretty easy.

Also, these projectors have no way of producing sound, so you'll need a receiver with speakers. I'd suggest getting one of those home theater in a box. You can get a pretty decent one for around 400 to 500 bucks. I'd suggest anything by Yamaha. I got a Sony one because it came with a hd-upconvert dvd player. It's the 7000DH and it's pretty good for the money.

Just do your research, because if you do and save your money and get the right components and cables, your home theater will rock. If you don't do the research, you'll get a sub-par system and maybe pay too much for it. My home theater set up, which includes an HD projector, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound HTiB (home theater in a box), cable and screen cost me about 1500 bucks, and it's a very good system. I know that's a lot of money, but considering 3 years ago this would have cost 3500 bucks easy.

Network into a projector?

hisfirerai

I have a laptop that I need to connect into a local network that has a computer on it directly hooked up to a projector. What I need to do is take control of that machine with my laptop so that I may use the projector, I also need to use the files on my laptop for my presentation. How can I do this?

Answer
It will be easier the other way around.

Put your laptop on the network
Make the drive shareable
Then, from the projector laptop, access the file and display it.

To do it the other way around, you will need to use Netmeeting or remote desktop or something similar.

Is there any way to network a projector?

I want a projector to be networked so I can use any computer in my office to do a presentation with powerpoint.

Answer
Apparently there is, because I've seen the option in Vista. However, I'm not really sure how to do it if you're not using vista.

PS3 to Projector help??!!?

Jason S

Hello, I am buying an Infocus LP350 DLP projector which supposedly supports HDTV 1080i. Although it is an older projector and uses an M1-DA port.

My question is, how do I connect this to my PS3 (80gb) to get 1080i?
Will an M1-DA to HDMI adapter work or will I need to get something else?

(This projector is NOT HDCP-compatible but I've heard that you don't need this compatibility to use the PS3).

I do have a single component cable for video, but I really want to do it in high def, so I probably won't use this component plug.

Thanks in advance!

Answer
1) The LP350 is HD-'compatible': Which means it can accept a HD video input signal (1080i), even though the LP350 native resolution is much lower (768i). A true HD projector has a native resolution 1920x1080

In other words, the projector does not reproduce 1080i; it projects a portion of the HD signal. It doesn't chop up the picture, but it certainly isn't HD quality

2) LP350 is essentially a business projector - for slides, etc. It is 4:3 native, 500:1 contrast, accepts VGA or S-Video... http://www.infocus.com/Support/Products/Projectors/LP350.aspx
...fairly weak to use for HD viewing compared to another inFocus lke this: http://www.infocus.com/Products/Projectors/IN82.aspx

Look at the specs; use it as a shopping guide, if you're open to other brands
If your goal is to get HD quality video on your screen, please research projectors that offer a native resolution of 1080i @ 16:9, HDMI inputs, or component video inputs at the least

Will 3d projectors support ps3 3d games when the update is released?

SMG92

Will 3d projectors support ps3 3d games when the update is released? Also has anyone currently got a 3d projector & how worth while would it be to get one considering the upcoming rise of 3d games & films?

Answer
yes and to give the perfect example go to the link i provided below and click on FAQ. The PJD6531w is 3d ready projector that i plan on purchasing and i've been researching my 3D possibilities for about 6 months now. A lot of people are completely unaware there are a wide range of different 3D options on the market today such as Nvidia 3d vision, Iz3D, 3D ready monitors and projectors. Practically all you have to do is get XpanD's x102 or x103 universal glasses which are 3D DLP ready which means they are compatible with any 3D ready DLP tv or projector, turn the 3d option on your projector, make sure you have the 3d activated in the game menu and on ps3 output settings also. that's it. I've included more links to make sure you get all the info you may need.

How bright does my projector need to be?

john smith

I am looking for a new projector for my home to replace the previous one. My last was always hard to see during the day so I would like my next one to be bright enough so I can watch whenever I like including daytime. I know brightness for projectors is measured in lumen so I was just wondering how many would be needed to be able to watch in ambient light conditions.

Answer
This depends on so many factors that I can't see from here: How much ambient light? Where does it come from, relative to the screen location? How large is the screen? How much brightness do YOU find sufficient? How bright was your last projector?
Take the lumen output of your old projector, and multiply by how many times brighter you want your image.

Ambient Lighting for computers?

MrJediJunk

I have recently begun revamping my desk space when I remembered an article on Gizmodo from about a year ago, mentioning a set of USB connected ambient light projectors. I couldn't find the article. Is there anything out there like this that you can suggest?
All I got from that 'Ambient Light Projector' search was actual projectors, which I don't need lol what I am looking for is something simple to give my computer ambient lighting that matches whats onscreen. (Video games, movies, etc)

Answer
>Why don't you Google "ambient light projectors?" I did and it came up with lots of articles. I don't know anything about this topic but if you do some research on the net you probably will find something in all the articles I saw.

I am a college student and am looking to get a projector for my room. The room is about ten feet wide and what we would use it for is to hook it up to a laptop to watch movies and to run cable to it. What would you suggest I get that is reasonably priced?

Answer
Hi,
I think with projectors if you can spend a bit more $ you tend to get a few more features. I like the FAVI mini projector myself, it's around $200 and the reviews are generally positive on Amazon. Actually the best way to find the 'right" projector is perhaps to go to Amazon and search for laptop projectors - and read the reviews. Find out what people are saying, for example, does it run quiet, stay cool or overheat, plugin to your laptop or iPad, project well even with some light in the room, etc.

Hope that helps. I reviewed 3 laptop projectors in the link below if that helps. Thanks...

Hi I want to buy a projector for watching movies at night in my back yard. basically I need a projector that can give me a clear and large display. I'm also on a low budget so the cheaper the better. does anyone have suggestions?

Answer
BenQ Joybee LED projector £300-400. No cheap projector will give you a big, clear image but the Joybee is as good as some non-led models. Mine works best with a matt, slightly off-white wall or screen, a brilliant white screen reflects too much and the colours look a bit washed out. You will also need a speaker system, Joybee has on onboard speaker but it's very small and quiet.

Can anyone refer me to a Entertainment Projector under 500 Dollars?

mpkardinal

I really want a projector for my home!!!

Answer
Price Grabber is an awesome site that you can shop from but most importantly they have customer reviews and product info.
I quickly checked it out and found several. You can set parameters like price range on the left of the screen after being directed to the projectors. The price is obtainable but only if you choose not to buy a screen because I've looked into it myself. Screens alone cost a couple hundred bucks I think that special paint is available for walls then projector sizing will not be a problem. Good luck.

What home theater projector should I buy for under $500?

Silence

Ive got some space in a house for the home cinema/gaming area ive always wanted, in america though, where I havent got a clue about anything (I just arrived from england you see) so I was wondering what sort of home projector I can afford for around $400?

Ive seen a few on ebay for $300 that claim to be HD, but I read the specs and its only 640x480 pixels so thats clearly not HD is it.

Price is a key factor for me, I dont have alot, because ive set budgets for a couch/speaker system/etc.. for the cinema room so it really needs to be proper value for money, and no more than $500 but the cheaper the better.

What would you recommend and how should I set it up? I was planning on just getting some dark curtains to block out the sunlight, and fix the projector to the ceiling, then project it onto a large wall with no screen would this be appropiate?

Any other info would be much appreciated thanks for your time...

Computer Projector Opinion?

buffkjehfk

I am looking to buy a projector so that I can host movie nights in the backyard and watch regular 4:3 television. Do you guys think the Optoma EP727 is a good projector for my uses? It would be used most in low light. Full specs are at:
http://www.projectorpeople.com/projectors/projspec.asp?itemid=23263&itmname=Optoma%20EP727

Also, should I buy it from Amazon or ProjectorPeople or somewhere else?
Thanks.

Answer
The videophile types would say that projector is not full HD but you probably will like the picture anyway. I invite a group over for "movie nights" using a XGA projector like that one projecting onto a 60 inch wide screen and the picture is great! I just use the "s-video" input.

Projector People is the way to go...I have bought several projectors from them over the years. They are knowledgeable and have great service.

Outdoor movie projector system?

l2brennan

I'm researching outdoor movie theatre equipment...overwhelming. We would use during warm season in backyard to play primarily DVDs (maybe pictures from a thumb drive or connect a laptop).

Welcome input as to what I should consider or what you have successfully purchased and used.

Tx in advance!

Answer
if you will be watching the movies at night, just get a decent lcd or dlp front projector ($400-600) and a screen.

depending on where you plan to put the screen depends on what type of screen.

check out this inflatable screen at walmart:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7983503&sourceid=1500000000000003260350&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=7983503

big size and great price

check out this projector at walmart:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10226372

if you go to costco or other warehouse club shopping place, i have seen a sharp projector there for around $500 as well.

just remeber that any of these lcd/dlp projectors use a bulb that will eventually burn out

projector info PLEASE?

John 117

I am thinking of getting a projector for my bed room. I hardly know anything.

Answer
Projector is not an ideal for use in your bedroom. It requires a big room, and the lamps only last around 2,000 hours and can cost you $300 to replace. For a decent one it can cost you a minimum of $1,500. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on projectors. You can also buy the March issue, it list just about all the projector in the market. Beside that you also need a projector screen, a home theater system for the sound. You are better off buying a tv, say a 42" Plasma for around $600. Hope this will help you out.

Answer
Sony's newest 1080p projector, the Bravia VPL-HW10, is now available, and it is easily the finest projector from Sony we've yet seen. The HW10 is brighter than previous models by a decent margin, has excellent contrast, open midtones, a sharp picture, and good placement flexibility. The Sony VPL-HW10 delivers a vibrant, dynamic picture, and it is a very competitive projector among the new 1080p resolution products coming to market this fall.

Do projector style headlights use different bulbs than regular headlights?

AjaxGnome

I'm getting these headlights imported from malaysia and want to make sure that i'll be able to find the bulbs in the us...

Answer
Yes, when you change from stock Headlights to projector headlights they use the same stock wiring harness but they do change to different bulb sizes. Once you get your Projector HL check the bulb size and you should be able to buy it wherever they sell car light bulbs.

How far has 3D projector technology come?

Mitch Rawl

Is it at the start of its technology curve or would I be well advised to buy ne... i also want super HD quality for standard videos... would I be better off just getting top of the range standard projector or waiting years for a 3D?

Answer
3D is nothing more than a fad. It's a temporary interest that is on it's downward swing. Soon, very few movies at all will be in 3D since people are getting really tired of 3D. There are already people, like myself, who will completely boycott a movie that is in 3D for the simple fact that it's ruining the entertainment industry. Hollywood would rather make a really crappy movie in 3D because moronic mouth-breathers are obsessed with crap "popping out" of the screen at them, than to produce a movie that actually has a legitimate story line or decent acting. People are finally starting to realize this, and they are finally starting to respond. Within the next few years, hardly any movie will be in 3D.

So go ahead and waste you money only to find that 10 years from now you will be stuck with the same 7 crappy movies to watch in 3D.

Help with PS3 + 3D Projector?

karl

Does anybody know if this projector

http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-PJD6531w-Projector-120Hz-Lumens/dp/B0033PRQE2/ref=pd_cp_e_0

will work with 3D from a PS3? (For 3D Blu-Ray movies and/or 3D Games?)
How about this one?
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/656359-REG/BenQ_MP626_MP626_DLP_Projector.html

Answer
Several projectors are being sold that are compatible with NVIDIA 3D Vision: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-requirements.html . NVIDIA 3D Vision is a PC based viewing system, a PC is required to deliver the 3D video to a 3D TV or projector.

If you buy a projector that is compatible with NVIDIA 3D Vision, that doesn't guarantee that it will also accept 3D video from a stand-alone Blu-ray player, such as the PS3. Many of those projectors might only be able to accept 3D video from a PC with an NVIDIA 3D graphic card installed.

So you might want to wait until a website has tested a 3D projector with a 3D Blu-ray player, to make sure that it isn't an "NVIDIA only" 3D projector.

If I were to buy a projector, which should i get?

no name

I want one for my bedroom to hook up a VCR/DVD, PS2, and surround sound. I am trying to get one for a good buy... hopefully under $700. Can you help??

Answer
Bear with me .. I'm writing this as a general answer since I'm not sure what familiarity you have with projectors.

The performance of projectors has risen and prices have fallen considerably over the last year or so. That said, the sub $1000 price point is populated mainly by "business" projectors (lower contrast ratio, bright, but sometimes noisy, often 4:3 aspect ratio, sometimes weak video processing) lower resolution (VGA, SVGA, XGA) projectors and a mix of basic new or discontinued/used/refurbished 720p "home theatre" models (usually 16:9 format, generally better contrast ratio, quieter, less bright, better colour accuracy and superior video processing).

So what you want to do is certainly possible, although you should recognize that the picture will not be "breathtaking". But for games, VCR and normal DVD or TV signals on a moderate screen size in a dark room you should get a pretty good picture.

There are many brands and models of projector but they fall into basically two groups. Those based on LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology.

LCD projectors generally have somewhat more flexibility re. mounting (wider range zoom lens and greater offset capability) than DLP models but DLP are often considered to give a bit better picture (better blacks) and are more common in lower priced projectors.

The main issue for DLP (other than mounting flexibility) is the so called "rainbow effect" ... a visual sensitivity phenomenon a small proportion of people are sensitive to (and that manufacturers have addressed by increasing the speed (and number of segments) of the "colour wheel" in DLP projectors). You can readup on this issue separately if interested, but basically the specs for a DLP projector will include a number for colour wheel speed (typically 4x or 5x) ... and anything more than 4x on a 6 segment (or more) colour wheel is unlikely to cause problems in the vast majority of viewers. On the other hand LCD projectors are more prone to the "screen door effect" -- the visibility of lines around the pixels in the image -- which require sitting further back from the screen than for a DLP projector.

OK, so what would be a good bet for you? It's difficult to offer specific suggestions given the confusing mix at this price point but have a look at the 1st link below to search for models that meet your needs. This will give a number of possibilities that you can read up on and try to find.

To give a couple of specific possibilities, the Optoma HD70 -- a 720p DLP model -- has had good reviews (2nd link) and may be available at or near your price point, and the InFocus Playbig IN72 is another possibility (although lower resolution). Or just look at the 4th link (most more $$ than you are willing to spend ... but some possibilties). Finally, consider a discontinued/refurbished or used model that originally sold for much more. For example InFocus have a store on their US site that sells off refurbished models at good prices (5th link).

Hope this helps.

What is a good, cheap full HD projector?

Mystery?

I need to find a good, cheap full hd (1080p) projector that is under $700?

It should also be able to support 720p (For video games that cannot support a higher HD resolution).

Answer
There are hardly any projectors under $700 at all. For a full HD one you're looking at around 2-5 grand.

Panasonic projector lamp?

KD

I bought a panasonic pt ax100u projector which has a bulb expected to live around 800 hours around 700 it started to shut off once then have to be turned on and worked fine...well after 4 months later and having to turn the darn thing on 5 times before it stays on im curious as to if its a bulb issue or something else. I thought bulbs just died or dimmed for like 2 weeks then died...any thoughts?

Answer
I don't know that projector, and while it could be the bulb may be some other issue. Not much help so far ... eh?

Consider three things ... first, 800 hrs is very low. 2000-3000 hrs is more typical (although bulbs can blow at any time ... particularly if the projector is shut off before inadequate lamp cooling, subject to power cuts, run too hot for too long, etc).

Second, bulbs do generally slowly dim, although they can actually shatter. In recognition of the latter I have read that some projectors have a lamp usage timer that will trigger a visual warning at some set point, and then actually shut down the projector at the limit set by the manufactuer. I don't believe this is common, but it is done. That said, it would be a poor scheme that still allowed restart after multiple shut downs. But you never know ...

Third, consider some type of cooling related problem (e.g. a plugged or semi-plugged cooling filter). That said, this is usually a go/no go based on triggering the protection circuits because of heat rise, rather than an intermittent thing. But maybe ...

The real test would be to try putting in a spare bulb (you do have one by now, right?) and see if it cures the problem. If no ... it's something else. If so, it was the lamp.

Except for if you change the lamp --- in which case you probably have an answer as to whether it is the lamp or something else -- you probably should check with Panasonic support or the dealer you bought it from and see what they say if you describe the problem.

Good luck.

why my Projector Lamp not giving good quality result?

moonnighti

Last month i replaced my projector lamp with a new one as the previous was giving lamp warning. After replacement of new lamp, the projector output quality has reduced. Can anyone help me that while purchasing Projector lamp , what all factors we need to look in For example i asked from shop keeper about its life and he told me its life is 2000 hours.
are there other factors also other than telling only model number.
are the lamps which can be fitted in same projector can have different Wattage or lumenous or brightness or any other Factor. Plz Explain in detail.

Answer
Yes, a lot of projectors use some common projector lamp types and some of the common lamp housings can have different intensity (read as watts or lumens) lamps fitted into them as required. You should choose the lamp as per your projector model instructions.

If you bought the projector bulb as per your instructed model number then the problem maybe in the lamp or in the projector settings.

is there a wall paint you can use for a video projector?

andy sol

Answer
There are some DIY paint formulas listed here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=646534 .

They also list other budget-minded screen solutions, such as a $75 sheet of laminate (the countertop material made for gluing to plywood).

I went to the local art store and bought a large white canvas frame on sale. It's doing well for me until I have the funds to invest in something better.

What color should I paint my wall for a home theater projector? Flat? Semi-Gloss?

Joe66

I just bought a Mitsubishi Projector to watch movies on at home, I have the perfect wall to project it on, but what should I paint the wall, I don't want to spend a fortune on crazy specialty paints, just whatever I can find at Home Depot will do fine, but what is best?

Answer
As a previous answerer noted, AVS Forum has a wealth of information. As someone who has both painted and built a screen, here are some options:

If you really want to paint the wall, first make sure it's absolutely free of defects, they'll drive you crazy. Then paint with Behr Silver Screen (770E-2) available at Home Depot. A white paint will also work (such as Behr Ultra Pure White 1850) Use flat, not semi-gloss.

But a very important part of a screen is a dark border, it makes the image pop, improves apparent contrast, makes it look much more real. You can build a frame out of wood and black velvet fabric, or paint one on the wall with flat black.

I personally would recommend buying or building a screen you can hang. There are kits on eBay, and premade screens are not terribly expensive. If you want to DIY, you can either buy a sheet of 1/4" MDF board and paint that, or simply buy a piece of WilsonArt Designer White laminate, which can be painted, but actually makes a very nice screen untreated. Then build or paint a border around it.

A good screen is essential. Good luck.

Any other info would be much appreciated thanks for your time...

i am in the market for a projector. i have never owned one and no little to nothing about them. i own a large flat screen plasma tv, thats how i know about 1080p. i saw this one on amazon. it is one of few 1080p projectors i found under $2000. actually its the cheapest. tell me straight up. is this a piece of crap
ALSO WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS I SHOULD LOOK @ WHEN BUYING A PROJECTOR. I WANT EVERY VITAL THING! THANX IN ADVANCE

Answer
Two Type of Projector LCD and DLP. LCD projector are quite, video are very vivid and bright but LCD projector are very big compare to DLP projector, which is smaller, louder fan noise, contrast (black level) are better than LCD projector. All projector require New lamp every 2000-3000 hours which is almost 3-5 year with 2-3 hours every day. But LCD projector can extend the lamp hours to 4000 to 5000 hours if the projector is clean regularly. DLP projector are not light that, if time limit is reach than you have to buy a new bulb. I would recommend you buy a Sanyo Z2000 1080p for $1549 with $600 rebate(at BHphoto.com). If that is to high, than buy a Optoma HD65, it's the best projector under $1000.00. Optoma is the leading budget projector for many year, it also have 2 year warranty. THe Sany Z2000 1080P have 3 year warranty. If you do buy a projector, make sure to at least buy 3 year warranty! Projector tend to brake down after warranty period, fixing it is costly so remember to buy extend warranty and regular cleaning for LCD projector and it will last a very long time.

about lumens projectors?

Mike J

i heard there really cheap, you can buy a 1000 or 1500 on ebay brand new for under 500, it also says bulbs on it last 6000 hours, and they only cost 50 bucks per bulb, this seems to good to be true, i heard all projector bulbs can only last 1000 hours

Answer
There may be some confusion here.

Lumens is a measure of projector brightness. A typical Home theatre projector is rated at 1000-1500 lumens, but this is reduced to 300-500 when adjusted for optimum colour accuracy.

Lamps are typically rated to last 2000-4000 hrs (I don't know of any that claim more) but actual can last much shorter (or, presumably) somewhat longer, depending on how they are treated.

Cost vary from about $200 - $500 .... I've never heard of a normal projector lamp that costs $50.

So, any projector claiming 1000+ lumens brightness and with a 6000 hr lamp life @ $50 to replace is either a significant breakthrough (unlikely), will have horrible colour accuracy, or is a scam.

Question for EPSON projector owners?!?

Bob A

Hello,

I am getting ready to buy one of the LCD projectors from EPSON, but for those of you who have the newer models of their projector line:

"What exactly does the zoom feature do?"

Now, I know that when you move the projector far from the screen, the image increases in size. When you move it closer, the image decreases in size. So, does zooming allowing you to obtain a decreased image from far away just like if the project was closer to the screen? Thanks for the clarification and please do not direct me to another source. All I want to know is if I can adjust the size of the screen when it is x amount of feet away from the screen.

Example:

When the projector is 12 feet from the screen, the size may be 70x70. Can I "zoom in" and have a 50x50 size screen from the same exact 12 feet from the screen projector distance?

Again, thank you for the knowledge and if you don't have an EPSON, still inform me the general nature of the product.

Answer
Your understanding of it is correct. The zoom lens enlarges/decreases the image size.

How much you can zoom in and out is dependant on the projector. If you had it at 12 feet and had an Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080 UB then you would have a range of 57" to 122" diagonal.

Check out your projector on http://www.projectorcentral.com and use their calculator to estimate the size of screen you can have when the projector is X feet away from the screen. Their calculator will also tell you an approximate brightness of the projected image (how dark you room has to be).

I have an older Epson 550, but the zoom lens is the same as the newer models. I have my projector 10 feet away from the screen and it will go up to about 96" (diagonal). I have mine at 90" though.

Epson 7800P projector?

shady1070

I received a few New Lamp bulbs for a epson 7800,7900 projector. Can I use these bulbs in any other cheaper projector epson makes. I really do not need something with 3000 lumens
Are these good for home theatre though. Since I have a few lamps, It will last me a long time. That is why im really thinking about finding one.

Answer
I do not believe that this lamp works in any of the cheaper units. Only the powerlite data lineup, its ouput is actually about 4000 ANSI lumens by the way, it ranges though based on the unit it is installed in.

PER EPSON:
The Epson ELPLP22 ultra high efficiency (UHE) projector lamp is designed as a replacement projector bulb for the Epson PowerLite 7800p, PowerLite 7850p and PowerLite 7900NL Projectors.

Where can I download HDCP test content?

Freedom

Hello,

I am working on my home theater setup, I am working on some calibrations and I'd really like a way to verify everything is in place as it should be. The plan I have is to install a blu-ray reader on my PC and run it to my projector, before I do that I'd like to see a little bit of 1080p content. I've downloaded some 1920x1080 video clips but I don't think this is what I am talking about. I am looking for something that will run like it was a blu-ray disk, even just seconds worth would be cool. I am concerned about HDCP working with my sound and video as I'd like it to.

Thank you.

Answer
I'm not sure you have things quite straight.

The only thing you can be sure will "run like ... Blu-ray" is a Blu-ray disk. The reason is that Blu-ray video is (primarily) 1920x1080 resolution @ 24 fps, and 8 bit colour with a maximum bitrate of 40 Mbit/s ... and the whole thing MPEG2 or 4 or VC-1 coded in a multiplexed MPEG transport stream format.

Other video streams ... such as your 1920x1080 clips ... may be the same resolution as Blu-ray but likely are not the same framerate, bitrate or even coding.

As to HDCP it is a form of DRM that (when active) is supposed to ensure that only authorized HD connections (HDMI) work and that analog HD capable video formats (e.g. component video) do not pass video above SD resolution. HDCP has nothing to do with calibration or how the video looks ... other than to possibly degrade or cut it off.

HDCP is also unrelated to audio (although if it causes cutoff of the HDMI connection it may cut off BOTH video and audio on the HDMI line (I'm not certain).

By the end of 2010 HDCP will kick in and HD analog connections will no longer be allowed on new Blu-ray equipment (existing models can be sold until 2013). BTW, it isn't clear yet if studios will implement the Image Constraint Token (ITC, the mechanism by which HDCP would be triggered) on Blu-ray disks anytime soon. At the moment the mechanism exists but has been unused.

This stuff is all complex, but most of it is (at least supposed to be) transparent to the user. "All" you need to do is ensure any video equipment is described in the specs as HDCP compliant. Given your intent to use a computer based player though ... and not all are HDCP compliant you should verify before proceeding or your HDMI connection may no longer work if the ITC is implemented on Blu-ray disks at some future date.

Is this computer bundle a good one?

The HUGE pricetag: $22,999.99

Answer
Not for that price tag you can build much better. For a workstation you can get much better like a SR-2 board with two xeons and multiple workstation cards, but the PCI express SSDs are just stupid priced. This computer build would NOT be a gaming machine but a workstation machine used for multi threaded programs such as CAD.
I can tell your just a noob and piling the most expensive things on.

What projector should i get?

Q. I am making a home theater!
I need a projector that will be 15.52 feet away from the screen.
The screen is 8.3 feet tall and 8.11 feet wide.
I want to be able to plug a hdmi wire into it from a dvd player.
I am looking for the most bang for my buck!
1080p is what i want but im willing to go down to 720p.

Thanks!

Answer
I just finished my 'man cave'. I used Epson Powerlite home cinema 8350 projector. i cannot recommend it enough. For the money, I think it is one of the best out there. It is a little larger than some of the others but it is quite and has plenty of mounting options. it should run less than $1200.

Im looking to buy a new projector....... suggestions?

Person

-i would like it to be able to project atleast 100 inches
-1080p
-3D not necessary
-have hdmi ports (to plug my ps3 into it)

its gonna be for home entertainment and it will be mounted in my basement. preferably under 500$

Answer
I have the Epson 8350 Home Cinema, meets all your requirements except for price. You may have a hard time finding a 1080p projector for that price that has a decent number of lumens. I would stay above 2000.

Cheap, high quality projectors?

halobeast

I want to get a good projector without spending alot of $. What are some good kinds?

Answer
Cheap and high quality are incompatible. You won't get a reasonable projector for much under $500-$600 and an HD model with good contrast ratio suitable for home theatre use is going to be $1000 or more. 1080p models cost $2000 and up.

As long as you are aware that projectors require occasional lamp replacement ($300-$500) ... about every 2-3 years ... and work best in a dim/dark room, they are a great choice for seeing movies or HDTV or playing games on a big screen.

Some reputable brands include: Epson, Optoma, Panasonic, Sanyo, Benq, Sony, InFocus, Mitsubishi.

Large screen HD lcd tv or high quality projector?

Frankie

I know plasmas are bad because of burn in and dlps have problems tracking fast moving scenes, but high quality projectors are supposed to be able to handle HD. I would want to use it for videogames too. Which is the better option?

Answer
Modern plasma HDTVs are no longer as prone to burn-in, but they do use more electricity than other options and turn out more heat. That said, they arguably provide the best picture ... but only from very high end and expensive models ($5000 up).

LCD can give a good picture, but they are expensive at large screen sizes. It's actually LCD (not DLP) that may have problems with fast images. That said, some LCD panel technology is better than others ... although fast response times tend to be associated with more expensive panels.

Rear projection HDTVs are not as bulky as they used to be, and screen size to dollar ratio is favourable relative to LCD and plasma flatscreens, but the best viewing angle is somewhat narrow. Basically, there is no advantage over a front projector (in my view) and several disadvantages.

A front projector is the best way to get a BIG picture (100"+ is easily achievable), and since the screen can be as simple as a blank white wall (although not if you want a really good picture) or can be rolled up when not in use, unlike even a flatscreen TV it doesn't have to take over the room (The projector itself is usually quite small).

Projectors are available at three resolution levels: 480p (from $500), 720p (~$1000 up), and 1080p (~$2200 up). In other words, you can have a 1080p 120" display for about the same price as a 50"-60" flatscreen.

As with any HDTV, projectors give the best picture when there is little ambient light. They are not a good choice for a bright room.

The big downside of front projectors (and rear projectors) is that the lamps need to be replaced every 2-4000 hrs, and replacements cost ~$300-500. But, put that in perspective -- lamp costs amortize out to about $0.25/hr.

So for watching movies or HDTV for 2-3 hrs/day projectors are a great choice ... big, gorgeous picture and, with a good sound system -- just like being at the movies! They can be a good choice for games too, but replacing a lamp every 8-12 months may be the price of the big picture.
