Projectors?

Pasky M

I have a few questions about projectors, I am going to get one to put in my room that I want to hook my computer up to to play games on a huge screen, i want to wathc movies on it through my computer, and I want to be able to watch local t.v. chaneels on it somehow. (my budget is I'm trying to keep it under $1000 including projection screen; I already have a sound system so that's not in my budget)

Q1: What projector should I get?
Q2: I get that the amount of lumens means how bright it can get, so what would be a good amount of lumens?
Q3: What would be a good contrast ratio? (I know the higher the better, but what is minimum amount the projector should have?)
Q4: What brand?
Q5: Where should I get it (Newegg, Bestbuy, Tigerdirect?)
Q6: Is a projector worth it instead of a tv? (I have enough space for up to 200 inches, so I thought a projecter would be a good idea, because then I could roll up the screen when I didn't need, and use the space, and it's cheaper than a big t.v.)
Ummmmm.. one thing I forgot is: is there anyway I can hook my projector up to local t.v.? (like bunny ears). I also understand that all t.v. will be digital by february of next year, so could I use a digital box to get local channels to play on my projecter?

Answer
Lets see If I can help

Q1: What projector should I get?

You want to make sure that the pj you get has a native resolution of at least 1280 X 720 so you can experience 720p HD. You should be able to find one for less than $800 and I actually just picked up an Optoma HD70 for about $650 after rebate.

Q2: I get that the amount of lumens means how bright it can get, so what would be a good amount of lumens?

Anything between 1000 and 1200 should be good. You get too many Lumens and you risk washing out the picture.

Q3: What would be a good contrast ratio? (I know the higher the better, but what is minimum amount the projector should have?)

I'd look for at least 2000:1

Q4: What brand?

There a gazillion of them but I prefer Infocus, Optoma or Epson and have had good experiences with all of them.

Q5: Where should I get it (Newegg, Bestbuy, Tigerdirect?)

For gods sake not Best Buy. Personally I have bought a few from Tigerdirect, but before I do I will do a search for the specific item on Yahoo Shopping so I can compare all of the online prices.

Q6: Is a projector worth it instead of a tv?

Absolutely! Watching HD on the big screen will BLOW YOU AWAY! I have been slowly replacing ALL my TV's with projection

Hi everyone looking for Projector OPTOMA GT 750 prefer or GT 720?

Q. ok now i have tried a number of australian website to offset shipping cost and warranty.
all these site either don't have this model in stock and are heavily over priced as they just love to mark up everything in this country. The projector GT750 retails in US for $799 bargain yeah so aus dollar would be evan cheaper. Im continually searching ebay daily for this model to become available also.
I don't require native 1080p because my eye's are f*#d anyway and i cant tell the differencbetweenen native 720p anyway.
My main use is just for PS3 and HD movies either streamed oblue-rayay via ps3. don'tnt dig aus TV so wont be watching that crud. DL tv shows instead.
Help is much much appreciated and anyone who already owns a projector your advise is more than welcome.
This will be my first projector and i really dont want to be spending over a 1k at max as it will just be overkill for what i want it for.I not even run 5.1/7.1 just hooking up to Logitech Z623 Speaker System 2.1 THX certified speakers which are awesome enough for the bugsy$$$
So conclusion would love to know shop in australia that stocks OPTOMA GT750 PROJECTOR at reasonably priced

Again i've spent almost a week looking so your help would be great.
thanks

Should I buy a TV or a Projector?

Q. I am thinking on buying a tv, but I see that it would be more "cool" if I have a Projector.
What should I buy?

Answer
Projectors are expensive to maintain. You have to replace the bulb every so many hours. LCD and DLP projectors typically have a lamp life of 2000-4000 hours. That's the problem with projection television. These projectors use special high-pressure lamps that cost between $200 and $500. Projector owners who primarily watch movies and special events run their projectors an average of about 8 hours a week. For a projector with a 2000-hour lamp, that translates to 4-5 years of use. But if you use a projector as your main TV, logging say 4 hours per day, you'll be looking at lamp replacement in under a year and a half.

Also, a projector has no built-in TV tuner of any kind, but it will display signals from an HDTV tuner, satellite receiver, or cable box.

The best projector performance in a home theater, you should be able to substantially reduce or eliminate light in the room, whether it's daylight or room lights. Rooms with few windows are good candidates. If you plan to use a projector in a room that gets a lot of sunlight, you may need to limit your viewing to after dark.

which projector to buy for home cinema viewing?

Syed Aftab

Please guide me with respect to DLP vs LCD, contrast ratio, brand, resolution, performance to decide what projector to buy.

Answer
LCD Projectors: Strengths
* Richer color dynamics for better results in rooms with ample ambient light
* Draw less power
* Throw less heat
* No color filter wheel = No "rainbow effect"
* Slightly quieter Seemingly sharper image on data

DLP Projectors: Strengths
* Smoother video
* Smaller box
* Pixels far less visible, (although normally not an issue for business use)
* More âfilmlikeâ on DVD and HDTV
* Generate "blacker" blacks
* Higher contrast

LCD Projectors: Disadvantages
* More visible pixels
* Some screen door effect on certain video images
* Physically larger - Even for the same number of lumens
* Poorer contrast
* Blacks come out lighter gray than DLP prrojectors

DLP Projectors: Disadvantages
* Rainbow effect bothers some
* More moving parts (color filter wheel)
* Color filter wheel often produces soft but audible whine
* Poorer reds and yellows at full power
* Color saturation
* Need more lumens than LCD, for rich colors, when dealing with ambient light

Macbook Pro to a projector: vga or dvi adapter?

Q. For my health presentation,we're using my macbook pro (has mini display port) using keynote (not powerpoint).I want to connect it to the projector. But I don't know if I should buy a vga adapter or dvi one.Please help me!And where do I get them?

Answer
It depends on the projectorâwhat type of input does it use? You want to get the cable to match.

Most of the projectors I've run across have taken VGA, so the chances are good that would work. But there's no guarantee that any given type of cable will work unless you know what you're hooking it up to.

As to where to buy them? They're available from a number of sources (Apple stores, electronics stores, etc.). I've put links below to the page for each type of cable on Amazon.

what keys to press to connect macbook pro to projector under windows?

Amir

Answer
Now since I do not know what the Windows button is registered under for the Mac keyboard I am going to give you an alternative which is to go to the start menu and search up "Connect to a Projector" and it should pop up, it gives you 4 alternatives, the first one being automatically chosen, duplication means that the projector will basically show the same screen you see, extension means the projector will act like a secondary monitor, and the final one will make the projector the main screen.

what is the first movie ever made and who was the actors?

Cody C

Answer
In 1877 Charles Emile Reynaud invented the Praxinoscope, a mirrored drum that gives the illusion of movement using strips of pictures.

In 1881 William Kennedy Laurie Dickson designed the Kinetoscope, a kind of movie projector and ran a trial of a movie called 'Monkeyshines'.

A year after Thomas Edison's invention of the Kinetoscope the Holland Brothers opened the first Kinetoscope Parlor in New York. This was the first commercial exhibition of movies.

In 1895 Louis and Auguste Lumiere patented Cinematographe, a device that could project movies to several spectators at the same time. December 28 1895 they presented the first commercial display of a movie to an audience, running 20 minutes, consisting of 10 short stories.

'The Great Train Robbery' (1903) is considered to be the first real full length movie, the first narrative Western film with a storyline, and the first real smash hit.

slide carousel gaf anscorama 940 (slide projector)?

CSC78

Any recomendations of how I can obtain the carousel for this product. Eveything else is very clean. I can load slides one at a time but it's getting old. (no pun intended).

Looked on e-bay craigs list and well found tons of replacement bulbs but no carousel.

Any insight would help.

Answer
There were only a few types of "rotary" slide trays ever made the "Carousel" was a trademark and patented design of Kodak and, for the most part, was only manufactured for Kodak projectors. I believe there were a few knockoff models made by other companies but they were not generally successful.

The second most common was/is a "Sawyer" tray that works like a "Ferris Wheel" in a vertical configuration, this was the most commonly used tray for non-Kodak projectors and most GAF and Anscorama used this type of tray.

Try finding a used "Sawyer" style tray at a camera specialty store and try it in your machine or Google "Sawyer slide tray".

Note, one other rotary tray was fairly common, it was called "Airequipt". As far as I know this would fit Airequipt projectors ONLY and WILL NOT WORK on GAF projectors.

tv or projector in home theater?

Milo

we have a home theater in my house and it is painted and ready.... but it has no tv!!! My family and i are arguing about weather to buy a big screen tv with stand... or buy a projector!!! i say that we buy a tv because it could do HDMI to my 360 and i say the sound could probably be better but then the sound depends on the sound system.... and if we were to go with the projector we would have to point the cable control back because it would have to be placed in the back with the projector!! i would like some sugjestions and some personal experiences.... thanks

Answer
OK, from personal experience......here is what you should consider.

1. How dark is the room? If the room is able to be completely dark (blackout curtains, a door that closes the room from the rest of the house, etc.) then I would suggest getting a projector. If it's not a dark room, get a TV.....there is no good excuse to not follow this rule. Projectors are better, they have the movie theater feel, they can produce a spectacular image, they can be mounted on the ceiling so no ones head will get in the way. The only advantage of a TV is that a TV will look good in a room with open windows and sun shining in.

2. Don't worry about sound, this is completely the job of your sound receiver, it is actually proper to disable the TV speakers when you hook up a sound system.

3. How big is the room? This may limit you to which projectors you can purchase. In my opinion, the best Home Theater Projectors are DLP. However, the LCD projectors typically have better zoom features which work better in smaller rooms. You would probably want to position the projector 10 - 15 feet away from the screen for a 110" screen.

4. HDMI projectors are out there and they don't have to be outrageously expensive. Heres the problem, I don't know your budget. So with no knowledge of your budget, you will probably want a 1080p DLP projector. These are still about $3,000. If thats too expensive, I'd suggest the Optoma HD72 (720p HD Projector). This can be found for $800 these days and the reason it's so cheap is because it has no features other than an absolutely beautiful image. You need to aim, tilt, ect. almost everything manually....so I'd also suggest getting a nice ceiling mount that adjusts and tightens into place very well.....you can spend more to get a projector with features like "lens shift".

5. I don't know how easy it is for you to wire, but if you get a projector I would suggest getting an infrared repeater. This way you can aim your remote at the screen, then the repeater will send the signal through wires back to your components. You can buy an infrared repeater kit these days for $120 bucks on amazon. Some people actually keep the components in a different room so the indicator lights don't distract them.

6. This is for TV or a Projector.....Get a sound receiver with a feature called "Anaolg to HDMI conversion"....this way the only plug that goes to the projector is the HDMI cable.....everything else can plug into the back of your receiver using HDMI, components, composites, and S-Video. The receiver will then convert the signal to HDMI and send the image to the projector. I know ONKYO sells a great unit for about $350 to $450 that has this feature.

Buy a screen or paint a screen.....DO NOT play an image on the regular wall. You need a decent screen with a tight black border that fits the projectors image. I actually put black curtains up to cover the letter-boxing when I play the ultra-wide movies on DVD (they are wider than HDTV). This increases the perceived contrast ratio.

What is the best home theater projector?

habeshabuk

I want to buy a projector. The purpose of the projector is to watch movies from a DVD player, TV, and a computer. I am willing to spend up to $1,000. So which one has the best resolution and brightness for that amount?

Answer
The best 1080p HD projector that is near your price is $1700 Sanyo Z700. You don't say anything about wanting to watch Blu-ray or HD things in your question so you probably don't need a 1080p projector?

One of the best 720p projectors is the Panasonic AX200 and it runs $999. That should do great for your budget and since it is 720p that will still look great. All sports events are shot is 720p so if you have a HD cable or satellite feed it will look great on this projector.

!!!!!!!3D Glasses Videos!!!!?

GaGa-4-GaG

Ok My Friend Has The Black Glasses that look Like Real Pair.It Looks Like Just Tinted sunglasses. Also He Has the Red-ish And Green 3d Glasses. Is There Any Video Online That I Can Watch in 3D That Takes My Glasses.Or Is Impossible to watch Online?

Answer
For 3d to work you have a 2d movie for the left eye only and a 2d movie for the right eye only. Then you have to block the movie for the other eye with the glasses.

With the glasses form the movie the left eye movie is passed through a filter in the projector to give it counter clockwise circular polarized light waves, and a different filter for the right eye movie to give it clockwise circular polarized light waves. Then each lens just blocks the light wave for the other eye. There are 3d televisions that can give out 2 different polarized light waves but the pixels must be made to do this. JVC is the only major company releasing one.

Anaglyph 3d which uses the colored glasses the film for the one eye is passed through one color like red to give it a red tint and the film for the other eye a different color like blue to give it a blue tint. Then the glasses must have those same two colors so one color can be blocked. there are different color combinations in use with the red and cyan(blue-green) and green and magenta being the most common. Again the colors in the 3d movie must match the colors of the glasses. Youtube has several anaglyph 3d videos. Since color is used for the 3d effect any color tv can do this format.

I am buying a new projector but I cant decide which one to get.?

tjs323

I am buying a new projector but I cant decide which one to get. I have looked at tons of them. I see a good one and then the next one I see its either better or worse. I want one with a GREAT picture, it has to be quiet, it has to be able to connect to my computer, it cant be more than 600 dollars, It has to be able to project a picture close up, and it has to be a nice projector. What would you recomend I get?

Answer
I hate to dissapoint you, but at $600 you have limited choice if your intent is games, HDTV or DVDs ... but you didn't specify.

Projectors fall into three resolution classes: 480p ($500+); 720p ($900+); and, 1080p ($1900+) ... all US prices. Unfortunately the bulk of under $7-800 projectors (and many more expensive) are aimed at business users.

They will work for home use, BUT generally have poor contrast ratio, relatively low resolution, poor video processing, and (often) noisy fans and poor colour accuracy.

Inexpensive projectors are usually DLP based models (rather than LCD), which means they have a spinning colour wheel which -- unless fairly fast (>4X) -- will cause "rainbow effect" (headaches/visual field issues) in susceptible viewers (a small but not insignificant portion of the population). DLP does give a better contrast ratio than LCD though.

You can read more at the projectorcentral.com site you were directed to by another respondent, but the bottom line is at that price range -- unless you want a projector for business presentation type use -- you would be advised to look for an end-of-line, refurbished or used Home Theatre projector.

For example, I came across an ad for a BenQ 8700+ projector for $800 the other day. New, that projector cost over $5000 ... and it even came with a spare lamp. That raises the main issue with used projectors ... the lamps are $300+ so unless you know the lamp is in good shape you could be in for an expensive surprise not long after you buy.

Or, try the InFocus store ... they often have refurbished projectors at very reasonable prices.

I'm not going to suggest a specific projector, but (assuming you are after one for game and movie watching) look for the following characteristics:
- 1000-1500 ANSI Lumens
- fan noise: <28 dB
- VGA, composite, S-video, component (sometimes it's via an adapter to the VGA input) ... and if possible DVI or HDMI (HDCP compliant).
- 800x600 resolution (4:3) or 854x480 (16:9) or better

Read reviews and specs at projectorcentral.com or projectorreviews.com (See link). Projectorcentral.com has a handy calculator to help you determine how big the image will be at a specific distance (2nd link).

Finally, see the last link for a list of used projectors that may be of interest.

Hope this helps.

what is the difference between native resolution and maximum resolution with projectors?

joe

im looking to buy an HD projector and i want it to have 1080p. i see a lot that say native resolution of 1200x800 but with a maximum of 1600x1200 or higher. what is the difference, would i still be getting a 1080p type picture?

Answer
Joe - The "native resolution" is the resolution of the projector's LCD panel. The "max resolution" is the maximum resolution that the projector can display. Any time a projector receives a signal that is higher than the native resolution, the projector must process the high res signal so that it can display it.

how much does a SVGA native resolution affect a projector?

Lulea

Answer
SVGA = 800x600

A projector with SVGA native resolution must scale everything to 800x600. This resolution is greater than standard-definition (720x480i) but less than high-definition (1280x720 or greater).

Such projectors are generally best left for displaying simple PowerPoint presentations and the like.

projector or outdoor tv?

Chance

i just had a pool built and im looking to get an outdoor projector and screen...but im also considering an outdoor tv...i know outdoor projectors arent great during the day time, but my main concern is initial cost and setup? I couldnt find any reviews or pros and cons about the two...any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
Projectors are more expensive than your standard tv. Beside that you will also need a screen and a sound system to support it. You would not be able to watch a tv program on tv with a projector. You can purchase a large screen LED or Plasma tv from Samsung or Panasonic, say a 50" and it will be brighter than a projector during the day or night showing. Also projector lamps are only rated for around 2,000 hours of use and replacement lamps can be limited. Hope this will help you out.

Home Theater Projector or TV?

Q. I don't watch TV at all, but I would like to be able to watch movies on something bigger than my lap top. I heard about projectors and started doing some research, but it seems like projectors are way more expensive than any of the TVs out there. Is there a reason I should still get the projector instead of a TV? Do they last longer or something? Or is it only because they're bigger than a TV?
Thanks!

Answer
There are lots of arguments and theories relating to this subject so be prepared for lots of replies. In my opinion, it used to be the case that projectors had far better resolution and clarity over a crt set and that's why it was a prefered choice and also it was smaller than a rear projection set.
These days technology has moved on in leaps and bounds and with the innovation of HD technology, there is not a lot of difference when it comes to the home user. I would say to make sure you go plasma rather than LCD if you decide to go down the "tv" route
