projector tv into an interactive arcade experience?

Blackb3lt

I'm going to get a projector tv so that I can have a 6 foot screen. I'm also really looking forward to hooking it up with the wii and playing the shooters that are coming out with their zapper gun like resident evil and sega's ghost squad. My question is, are there any other interactive console's or hookups that would work well? I saw a console similar to wii a few years back for sports gaming? I'm hoping to turn my living room into a fun arcade experience. A good golf simulator game would be awesome too. Any help or advice would be great, thank you.
I have a 360, I'm just looking for a less hardcore gaming experience. something that your average person can pick up and start having fun with. I like the wii for that purpose, I don't think it's in the same league as sony or microsoft

Answer
wow...the projector idea is pretty cool (just make sure you don't loose out too much on graphics)

as for gaming and ultimate arcading, i like the wii overall (of couse i got my personal grudge against that xbox...)

and that sports simulation thingy you are talking about is mostly a waist of time. don't buy that.

otherwise im not too sure how to help you but....
yea thats it.

Good affordable golf simulators?

Colorword

I am considering getting an affordable golf simulator, but It seems like there's a lot to choose from and I can't find prices. Does anybody know of good golf simulators that are affordable? I would prefer to be hitting the "screen", but that probably increases the price.

Answer
It depends on what you consider "affordable". The Optishot is about $500, but I've seen good reviews for it. You do hit into a net, though. This is just a spur-of-the-moment thought, since I've never tried it, but I wonder if you could hook your TV or computer up to a projector, to have the images the Optishot projected onto a screen? It would meet both of your requirements...

Anything else will start to run you into the thousands of dollars for just the unit themselves. Trackman, Flightscope, Vector... they're all pretty good, but very expensive. The deals with the screen, projector, etc., run into the tens of thousands.

about lumens projectors?

Mike J

i heard there really cheap, you can buy a 1000 or 1500 on ebay brand new for under 500, it also says bulbs on it last 6000 hours, and they only cost 50 bucks per bulb, this seems to good to be true, i heard all projector bulbs can only last 1000 hours

Answer
There may be some confusion here.

Lumens is a measure of projector brightness. A typical Home theatre projector is rated at 1000-1500 lumens, but this is reduced to 300-500 when adjusted for optimum colour accuracy.

Lamps are typically rated to last 2000-4000 hrs (I don't know of any that claim more) but actual can last much shorter (or, presumably) somewhat longer, depending on how they are treated.

Cost vary from about $200 - $500 .... I've never heard of a normal projector lamp that costs $50.

So, any projector claiming 1000+ lumens brightness and with a 6000 hr lamp life @ $50 to replace is either a significant breakthrough (unlikely), will have horrible colour accuracy, or is a scam.

how can i build an attractive home theater for under $3500?

ashloooooo

Hello. I need help coming up with things to get for my home theater. My budget is $3500.
- My preferences include an electric 100"+ screen, and an Optoma projector. I also need a reciever, and a nice sound system.
- In terms of decor, I would like four seats (preferibly leather recliners if possible), attractice lights, and wall decor (maybe acoustic panels?), and I am able to get movie posters. I would like a curtian to go across the screen too.
- If someone could help me come up with a design, product list, it would mean the world to me! I cannot design for my life! Thanks a whole bunch!
- No more than $3500!!!!

Answer
I hate to say it, but the projector and screen could easily reach or exceed $3,500...The seats, lights, curtains and posters cost equally as much...And we haven't even talked about the AUDIO EQUIPMENT...Here's a website to a dealer I vistited who sells what you're asking for...Check out these prices: http://www.definitiveaudio.com/

Help with 3DS and Epson Projector?

XboxGamer1

So I'm doing an essay in school on Pokemon with my friend and we were gonna demonstrate a Pokemon battle but I will need to hook my 3DS up to the projector so the whole class can see. The teacher says it's an Epson Projector I think. I just wanted to know if I could hook up my 3DS to the projector and where could I get a cord for it.

Answer
There's no video out for the 3DS.

Any sort of video capture involves a pretty major modification of the console. Read more here: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/10/guide_how_to_capture_video_and_screenshots_from_your_3ds
That's probably more that you really want to do (and spend) for a school presentation.

As an alternative, try experimenting with video'ing the screen during game play. I would recommend mounting the 3DS on a flat surface and attaching the camera/phone to some king of tripod so that you get some steady shots. You'll be able to play these back from a laptop using a VGA to VGA cable connected to the projector.

What would be a good 8mm projector to buy?

devzin98

I'm looking to transfer 8mm reels to DVD, and need to buy a projector to do it. I've been on eBay, but there are some that cost $20, and others that are $150.....but I don't understand what the difference is. Please let me know what I should be looking for in the projector.

Answer
I have a collection of old movie cameras, and I actually shoot in 8mm as a hobby.

One thing you need to know, is your film regular 8mm ("double 8") or is it Super-8? The sprockets are different and you can't put Super-8 in a regular 8mm projector or vice-versa. Some projectors can use both kinds of film, but you have to be sure it specifcally says that you can use both.

For a regular 8mm movie film, I would recommend a Kodak 500 C3 projector. I have two of them. They're very simple and easy to load and they give a nice image. Also, they use a metal belt (actually a sort of spring) that runs the reels with the motor, so you don't have to worry about a rubber belt wearing out or breaking. The only little catch is that they do seem to have a problem with the light switch being a little loose, so you might have to play around with the switch a little bit to make the lamp stay on. But otherwise, they seem to be very simple, rugged projectors. I got mine on eBay for about $25, and I haven't had any problems with it.

I don't know about Super-8, since I've never used it. But when you do look for projectors, make sure the description is good and detailed. Be sure they at least plugged in the projector and powered it up...the lamp should work and the motor should run. Look at their pictues and see if you notice any obvious problems like a worn out or snapped belt. If the lamp bulb is burned out, that's not really a big problem because you can actually still get bulbs. But if the belt is broken, that will be really hard to find.

Don't even bother if the seller says something like "I don't know anything about film projectors" or "I don't know if it works." Be sure that they at least plugged in the projector, and the lamp lights and the motor runs.

Oh, one other thing...stay away from "auto load" projectors...any projector that automatically feeds the film in. Those are horrible. They will eat up and shred your film! I almost lost one of my rolls of fim because it jammed in the auto loader. Luckily, it was just the leader that got shreded. The simpler the projector, the better. Also, try to look for major companies that manufactored well known movie cameras and projectors. Kodak, Keystone, and Bell and Howell are good brands. Also, definitely Bolex. They made awesome movie cameras. I have a Bolex K2 movie camera and it is probably my favorite one now. But Bolex movie projectors are probably going to be expensive.

How much is a 8mm movie of George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon's Coronation worth?

zbuli3

i found it in a small purple box labeled England's Coronation. it is in full, and plays fine
it is in a box with no brand names, or trademarks, and in fancy gold etching says "England's Coronation" with a gold carriage etched into the top of the box

Answer
Your best bet would be to ask people who collect film themselves. I personally collect 16mm, and 8mm/Super-8, but I am not enough of an expert to give quotes on how much a film is worth. I am a member of 16mmfilmtalk.com forum, and we discuss, buy/sell/trade 16mm, 8mm/Super-8, and 35mm film, projectors, and equip. Someone on there would be more able to give you an accurate quote on how much this could be worth, or at least direct you to the proper place to find out.

What is a good contrast ratio for a 1080p projector?

Luke

I am looking at buying a 1080p projector, (look up PLV-1080HD and click on amazon link.) It says 10,000:1 contrast ratio. I also looked at the Optoma HD20 which has 4000:1. Will this make a huge difference? Also will the lumens make a big difference and what is a good number of lumens?

Answer
Before you worry about contrast ratio, realize that you need a light controlled room (i.e. pitch black) to even begin to see the benefit of high contrast ratios. If you have that pitch black theater room, then lumens is not a big deal unless you want a massive screen (120"+). In a perfect room, a lower brightness but higher contrast projector shines.

On the flip side, if you are putting this in a living room or someplace where you will have some light in the room, then contrast ratio is nice... but not critical. You need brightness in those cases (i.e. lumens). If this is case, I highly suggest the the Epson Home Cinema 8100 (1288 lumens in almost best "Dynamic" mode).

Lastly, some projectors are very limited in where you can place them, like the Optoma HD20. If you purchase the HD20 it will need very specific placement in the room to work. The Sanyo or the Epson can work with any type of room or mounting.

Read the review below on these three projectors and see which works best for your space. All three produce a great image, btw. But one may be better for your particular set-up.

Are lcd 1080p projector clear and bright?

storky

Answer
Not enough detail to answer.

1080p refers to resolution ... which addresses the clear question ... yes the image will be clear (assuming you feed a 1080 picture (e.g. Blu-ray).

Regarding brightness, any 1080p projector will be fairly bright, but since they can vary from about 1000 -> more than 7000 lumens it's difficult to generalize. If you mean can you get an image as bright as a plasma TV .. probably not (but then an image that bright isn't realistic). If you mean can you get as bright as at a movie theater ... yes.

But quality of the image is determined more by contrast/dynamic range, and colour accuracy and saturation (plus resolution) than by brightness.

If what you mean is can you get an image like at a movie theaters ... large, clear and amazing looking ... with a 1080p projector ... YES. Is it as good or better than a good quality flatscreen HDTV .. it's certainly going to be larger. It may not be "better" for all viewing (e.g.an HDTV may be better for sports in a bright room), but a projector is the way videophiles prefer to watch movies.

do projectors have the same if not better quality than a tv?

heyheyyouy

i was considering getting a projector tv instead of a normal tv. is the quality the same if not better? what are some of the best ones and do all projectors fit all projector screens or will they tell you what it fits in the description? thanks.

Answer
Projectors look great if you are far enough away, say 8' or more. Up close you cant see much, and its all blurry. if you want a home theater room, then its definetly better than a tv, because the screen will be larger than any tv in the price range.

The projector will go on any white surface, so any screen. They just recommend the optimal distance when focusing at certain sizes.

For brand, Ive seen many good deals for HD projectors such as epson. They are they are the budget models that perform amazing at a great price.

Video projector or tv?

Jason

Ok here it is im debating on whether to get a projector that will be used as a tv, or a lcd tv. I am willing to spend around $500. Also, with the projector is there a need to buy speakers? After your choice if you can will you make a suggestion of the tv or projector? THX

Answer
I own a projector and these are the facts. If you are buying new do not get a projector because 500 dollars is not enough and you will not be happy. Also keep in mind that the room has to be somewhat dark to see the image. All projectors use a bulb that lasts around 3000 hours and then it needs to be replaced. Mine went out yesterday and will cost 465 dollars to replace.
Projectors only show an image. You usually have to have a digital box from your tv provider to make a connection and will have to have some sort of Stereo system for sound. In order to get a quality projector you need to visit higher end store like ultimate electronics or get one used on Ebay or Craigslist. Take some time and visit the different stores by you. If the store doesn't have it on display for you to see the picture than chances its not what you are looking for.

what is good resoulution for a hd projecter and is the 2000 LUMENS LCD HD VIDEO PT-LB51U PROJECTOR good?

mainkeegan

Answer
Yes and no. Let's look at this in a bit of detail.

HD means 720 or 1080 resolution, and in projector terms "true HD" is 1080p (1920x1280 pixels, 1080 horizontal lines, progressive).

There are essentially three resolution 'classes' of projector (1280p ($2500+), 720p ($1000+) and sub-720p (<$1000).

If you are looking to make business presentations (e.g. Powerpoint) or gaming a sub-720p projector is fine. But for home theatre you really want a 720p or 1080p model.

Now, brightness is used to indicate whether you can use the projector with ambient light present (or have to use it in a darkened room). 2000 Lumens is a fairly bright projector ... but typically this is the maximum brightness, and when adjusted for home theatre use will be much less. That said, many 1000 lumen projectors are plenty bright enough for use in a darkened room on 100" screens. So, bright is useful to have, but the best picture is always in a dark room and too much brightness can be as bad as not enough.

The Panasonic PT-LB51U is a business class projector. The 1024x768 resolution means it projects an image with an aspect ratio (width to height ratio) of 4:3 ... not 16:9 common today for widescreen movies). This is not bad ... in fact if you favour old movies it can even be an advantage ... but it means that if you project widescreen movies you don't use some of the 768 vertical pixels (they are used for the black bars). So this is a slightly sub-720p projector (although it will accept a 720p or 1080i input, it will have to interpolate this to the available pixels).

The 400:1 contrast ratio is poor. It means that the picture will be somewhat flat and lifeless. For HT use you want a minimum of 2000:1.

The hidden weakness with this projector is likely to be the video processing ... since it's not designed for HT use it is likely poor.

Finally at $800-$900 this is not a great buy for HT.

Have a look at the recommended models at the link ... you can get a true 720p HT projector for about the same price as this Panasonic. In fact the Panasonic PT-AX200U is one of the best 720p projectors out there ... and sells for $1300.

So bottom line, the projector you identified may be a fine business projector, but for HT use it would be borderline ... and you can do better for the price.

Hope this helps.

I was thinking of buying a not-very-expensive "Zoom Box-type" projector. Anyone have any suggestions?

oscar

Looking for a step up from Zoom Box toy, but not wanting to pay with an arm or leg. What's in the ballpark?

Answer
That projector looks horrible and cheap. It only has RCA composite video, which blown up to 60" will look like crap. I have an HD projector and when I first hooked up my PS2 to hit with just regular RCA jacks (composite video...the yellow plug) it looks horribly pixelated and soft on a focus. My screen is 115" so you can see every little pixel blown up. Then I did some research and got component cables for 20 bucks and the picture was 10 times better.

You can get an HD projector for less than a 1000 bucks, which is cheaper than most HD tvs. I have a Mitsubishi HD1000U, which is a native 720p projector with a contrast ratio of 2500:1 and 1500 lumens and it has HDMI, component video, SVGA, S-video, and regular composite video. It was 899 with free shipping from projectorpeople.com. The Mitsubishi won the Editor's Choice Awards for ProjectorCentral.com.

Right now, I watch movies with my HD-upconvert DVD player on a screen that 115" and it's true widescreen and the picture is very clear. I also play my Xbox and PS2 on that same screen and it's amazing.

Getting a projector is a lot of work to set up. You can't watch it during the day because the room has to be pretty dark. I also suggest either buying or building a screen. Screens cost anywhere from 200 to 1000 bucks, you can build one for less than 60 that works just as good if not better. I wouldn't just project the image on a wall unless you just painted it white and there are no holes from pictures or any flaw you can notice, because it will bug you when you're watching a movie. I built one and it was pretty easy.

Also, these projectors have no way of producing sound, so you'll need a receiver with speakers. I'd suggest getting one of those home theater in a box. You can get a pretty decent one for around 400 to 500 bucks. I'd suggest anything by Yamaha. I got a Sony one because it came with a hd-upconvert dvd player. It's the 7000DH and it's pretty good for the money.

Just do your research, because if you do and save your money and get the right components and cables, your home theater will rock. If you don't do the research, you'll get a sub-par system and maybe pay too much for it. My home theater set up, which includes an HD projector, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound HTiB (home theater in a box), cable and screen cost me about 1500 bucks, and it's a very good system. I know that's a lot of money, but considering 3 years ago this would have cost 3500 bucks easy.

Projectors?

Pasky M

I have a few questions about projectors, I am going to get one to put in my room that I want to hook my computer up to to play games on a huge screen, i want to wathc movies on it through my computer, and I want to be able to watch local t.v. chaneels on it somehow. (my budget is I'm trying to keep it under $1000 including projection screen; I already have a sound system so that's not in my budget)

Q1: What projector should I get?
Q2: I get that the amount of lumens means how bright it can get, so what would be a good amount of lumens?
Q3: What would be a good contrast ratio? (I know the higher the better, but what is minimum amount the projector should have?)
Q4: What brand?
Q5: Where should I get it (Newegg, Bestbuy, Tigerdirect?)
Q6: Is a projector worth it instead of a tv? (I have enough space for up to 200 inches, so I thought a projecter would be a good idea, because then I could roll up the screen when I didn't need, and use the space, and it's cheaper than a big t.v.)
Ummmmm.. one thing I forgot is: is there anyway I can hook my projector up to local t.v.? (like bunny ears). I also understand that all t.v. will be digital by february of next year, so could I use a digital box to get local channels to play on my projecter?

Answer
Lets see If I can help

Q1: What projector should I get?

You want to make sure that the pj you get has a native resolution of at least 1280 X 720 so you can experience 720p HD. You should be able to find one for less than $800 and I actually just picked up an Optoma HD70 for about $650 after rebate.

Q2: I get that the amount of lumens means how bright it can get, so what would be a good amount of lumens?

Anything between 1000 and 1200 should be good. You get too many Lumens and you risk washing out the picture.

Q3: What would be a good contrast ratio? (I know the higher the better, but what is minimum amount the projector should have?)

I'd look for at least 2000:1

Q4: What brand?

There a gazillion of them but I prefer Infocus, Optoma or Epson and have had good experiences with all of them.

Q5: Where should I get it (Newegg, Bestbuy, Tigerdirect?)

For gods sake not Best Buy. Personally I have bought a few from Tigerdirect, but before I do I will do a search for the specific item on Yahoo Shopping so I can compare all of the online prices.

Q6: Is a projector worth it instead of a tv?

Absolutely! Watching HD on the big screen will BLOW YOU AWAY! I have been slowly replacing ALL my TV's with projection

Need help finding a projector on a budget?

MSCreative

I have a

optoma ep716r projector

at the moment connected to my ps3 but want a better one... I have found the following one of ebay

170424105472

do you think it will be any good for quality or think it will be any better than the one i have

Any help or advice would be much appreciated as i am doing it on a £300 budget

Answer
If the specs are accurate it is what you are looking for. You won't get anything better with the budget you have. This one should do, especially since it is capable of up to 1080i performance (personally I'd never use the interlaced setting on a projector) Use the 720p setting on your PS3s output and the projector input ( use the Component cables for this if tehre is no user settings) for better projection results, especially if you plan on projecting a picture larger than 40 inches diaganal. The real price driver is the resolution, this one has 800:1 so its reasonable for the amount you are budgeting. If you can find a similar one in your budget that's new with as high contrast ratio as possible, that would be your best option

aftermarket hid projector/ halo headlights?

vettesr1

I am going to be getting a car this summer, and i know what car I want (Dodge Magnum) and i did some research and found that there are aftermarket headlights out there for this car that have h.i.d projector bulbs, and halo lights also. I was just wondering if these headlights are worth the money, and if they are good at lighting up the road at night better than any stock lights. I've read different things on the internet like they scatter light, and that they do good jobs, but i want to know from people who have them or friends have them and if they work well. Thanks

Answer
Here are the facts

-HID lights are significantly brighter than halogen bulbs, there is no question that visibility will be improved over halogens.

-Projector headlamps are just a type of fixture, as opposed to a reflector headlamp, it will offer a more defined beam pattern by sending less light upward where it is not used and essentially wasted. For this reason, it may offer improved visibility by sending more light where you need it on the road.

-The scatter issue, is mostly a word people use to describe the blinding effect of hid lights being 2-3X as bright as halogens. In the past, poor quality HID bulbs had light sources that wernt in the same position as the halogen, this created a wider beam pattern which could in theory cause "glare" but now, quality HID bulbs are available, and have an identical beam pattern

-Do to the nature of HID bulbs having a service life of 3500+ hours burn time, they typically outlast the car and pay for themselves because you no longer nee to periodically replace halogen bulbs, they are absolutely worth the money.

-Halo lights do not offer increased visibility, and are simply a ring around the light source that may be colored for aesthetics only.

-It is illegal in most locations to install HIDs onto low beams, or DTR, though you will pass inspection and suffer no risk of being ticketed if you install them onto fog lamps, or auxilary light fixtures like work lights, or overhead lights. It varries as to the legality of installing them on highbeams. All in all, it is similar to j walking in that peopel really dont care. I have met many inspectors that will pass vehicles with HIDs as long as they have high and lo beam function.

-There is a common misconception that higher color tempsuratures are brighter. Color tempurate is a scale of measuring the type of light being emitted, it is relevant to the tempurature that you woudl have to heat matter to emit that spectrum of light, and as nothign to do with the brightness though it is related. As you approach higher color temps, the light output begins to contain more blue, and more UV light, which doesn offer use for visibility 4300 has the most usable light output, and light output gets lower as you approach higher color temps, though higher color temps will offer more exotic colors. regardless of the color tewmp you choose, HID will always be brighter than halogens by far, so it is not a big deal.

I carry all sorts of HID kits for many cars, and bikes etc. Email me at FERRETnPARROT@aol.com for details

HID Kit installation help?

I have a 2005 Honda Accord Coupe

I recently installed these new projector headlights.
I have done so much research but I have some concerns and just looking for a second opinion

Aftermarket Headlight unit:
http://www.carid.com/2005-honda-accord-headlights/spyder-halo-led-projector-headlights-315485.html

I have been told that the standard halogen bulbs are just not enough for these headlights in terms of looks and light output. (As my OEM headlight units worked better with the factory halogen bulbs)

I am planning on purchasing
H1 Kensun 6000K HID kit

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ZF3IT6/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=automotive

I simply like to know if they are worth it and if they will fit.

Concerns:
- Slim ballast? or regular? (seems like everyone just gets the regular)
- Bulb not fitting due to HID bulb being longer than the standard halogen bulb?
-Temperature of HID kit effecting aftermarket headlight unit?
-After "squaring" the headlights, what is required to take care of the issue in blinding oncoming traffic?
-Which bulb of this headlight unit is considered the high beam and low beam?
Outermost or innermost? One has a "cap" in front of the bulb and the other you can see the bulb clearly.

Answer
plug and play HID kits are illegal in every state. PERIOD. there isnt a single plug and play kit that is DOT or NHTSA approved.

i dont get whats so hard to understand about that. even if you bought those cheap "projector" headlight assemblies, they arent made to take a REAL HID bulb or they would have a bulb part number like D1R, D2S etc, not 9006 or H1. what 99% of the community doesnt understand is that even if you buy a "projector" headlight assembly its still illegal, and its still going to dazzle oncoming traffic. thats why real HID projector headlights cost around $400-$1000+ each, the projector unit inside alone costs $120+

take a look on theretrofitsource.com to see the price of quality parts

READ: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html

this is directly from the NHTSA:
HID conversions result in two to three times the volume of light and potentially imprecise arc placement. Such conversions often result in beam patterns that behave nothing like the original filament beam pattern, cannot be reliably aimed, and have many times the permitted glare intensity. In informal conversations with persons who have tested such conversions, the light intensity on one at a point aimed toward oncoming drivers was 22 times the allowable intensity limit. Another lamp was more than 7 times too intense. With poor HID bulb and arc placement, the glare intensity could be significantly worse.

Are there any 4k home theater projectors?

Smyth

If so, what are their advantages since Blu-ray movies are limited to 1920x1080? What are some considerations to take into account when considering one?

Answer
JVC and Meridian Audio are the only two manufacturers of which Iâm aware that are currently producing high-end â4Kâ video projectors targeted specifically for the home theater market. Sony, Barco, Christie Digital, and others are targeted for professional or commercial applications, including Digital Cinema. Pricing for the current crop of 4K (home theater) projector systems is well beyond the mainstream consumer home theater market.

âWhat are their advantages since Blu-ray movies are limited to 1920x1080?â

4K projectors designed for home theater use will upscale all non-4K video source material to 4K resolution much as high-definition TVâs, monitors, projectors, and BD players do with SDTV and DVD-Video source material. I am not aware of any commercial native 4K video content currently available to consumers.

âWhat are some considerations to take into account when considering one?â

The obvious is cost - the cost to purchase the projection system as well as the total cost of ownership (TCO), which includes maintenance, servicing, power consumption, (e.g. the JVC and the Meridian 4K projectors consume up to 1500 watts each,) thermal management, (i.e. cooling,) operating noise, and installation. Both projectors also require the use of DVI-D connectors â there are no HDMI connectors.

About 3D home theater projectors ?

Dallasguy

I am very fan of 3D movies. I thinking to buy 3D projector in my home theater. People are saying these 3D projector are not real 3D projectors like in movie theaters and also saying we don't feel like 3D picture. How much is it True?. Is it worth to buy 3D home theater projectors? Which are the best projectors?

Answer
Its true, some projectors CAN give a bad 3D output but not if you choose the correct projector. The upcoming Panasonic PT-AE7000 can be a good option as it has an amazing contrast ratio of 300000:1 and 2000 lumens. According to review it seems great. It will be releasing in september. You should take a look at it or you can even even check out JVC projectors.

Where can I download HDCP test content?

Freedom

Hello,

I am working on my home theater setup, I am working on some calibrations and I'd really like a way to verify everything is in place as it should be. The plan I have is to install a blu-ray reader on my PC and run it to my projector, before I do that I'd like to see a little bit of 1080p content. I've downloaded some 1920x1080 video clips but I don't think this is what I am talking about. I am looking for something that will run like it was a blu-ray disk, even just seconds worth would be cool. I am concerned about HDCP working with my sound and video as I'd like it to.

Thank you.

Answer
I'm not sure you have things quite straight.

The only thing you can be sure will "run like ... Blu-ray" is a Blu-ray disk. The reason is that Blu-ray video is (primarily) 1920x1080 resolution @ 24 fps, and 8 bit colour with a maximum bitrate of 40 Mbit/s ... and the whole thing MPEG2 or 4 or VC-1 coded in a multiplexed MPEG transport stream format.

Other video streams ... such as your 1920x1080 clips ... may be the same resolution as Blu-ray but likely are not the same framerate, bitrate or even coding.

As to HDCP it is a form of DRM that (when active) is supposed to ensure that only authorized HD connections (HDMI) work and that analog HD capable video formats (e.g. component video) do not pass video above SD resolution. HDCP has nothing to do with calibration or how the video looks ... other than to possibly degrade or cut it off.

HDCP is also unrelated to audio (although if it causes cutoff of the HDMI connection it may cut off BOTH video and audio on the HDMI line (I'm not certain).

By the end of 2010 HDCP will kick in and HD analog connections will no longer be allowed on new Blu-ray equipment (existing models can be sold until 2013). BTW, it isn't clear yet if studios will implement the Image Constraint Token (ITC, the mechanism by which HDCP would be triggered) on Blu-ray disks anytime soon. At the moment the mechanism exists but has been unused.

This stuff is all complex, but most of it is (at least supposed to be) transparent to the user. "All" you need to do is ensure any video equipment is described in the specs as HDCP compliant. Given your intent to use a computer based player though ... and not all are HDCP compliant you should verify before proceeding or your HDMI connection may no longer work if the ITC is implemented on Blu-ray disks at some future date.

Will subwoofer vibrations affect projector lamp life?

tacopacofo

The subwoofer vibrates the walls and ceiling where it is mounted.

Answer
Definitely. You should place the subwoofer at least one foot from the wall where the projector is mounted and atop a speaker stand which is 4-6 inches in height.

Good luck!

is 5000 hours of lamp life in projectors long?

Arcane

BEST ANSWER 10 POINTS

Answer
It's certainly on the longer end of the norm for a non-LED projector. Most high pressure lamps in projectors are rated for 2-4000 hrs of use (with longer life in "eco mode"). Some claim up to 5000 hrs. BUT lamp lifetime is quite variable depending on how the lamp is treated and how one defines lifetime (lamps can still work but be much dimmer ... does this count?). I wouldn't be surprised to find that some claims of long lifetime lamps are inflated by including the tail end of the life cycle that more reputable manufacturers don't count. .

For example, rapid on-off cycles on a projector will shorten life significantly, while leaving the lamp on continually may give much longer lifetime than turning off after use (although much of the "lifetime" would then be wasted).

LED lamps -- available on some pico projectors and starting to show up on full size models have much longer lifetimes (20,000 hrs and more).

Viewsonic pjd5133 projector 3D?

nobody

So I'm considering buyin the viewsonic pjd5133 projector it says it's 3D ready . I have a ps3 and I want it to play video games but also to play or watch movies in 3D.. So all I need to watch it in 3D is the glasses ? I'm not sure if im also suppose to get some processor thing also please clarify thanks in advance !

Answer
"The projectorâs embedded emitter function means all thatâs required to unlock 3D capabilities is a pair of DLP Link compatible glasses, such as the optional ViewSonic PGD-250 active shutter glass kit." - (check source below)

So just DLP Link glasses are required.

Mist + multiple projectors = 3D hologram?

magicknigh

In film Now You See Me, they were used to create a 3D hologram. Is it real?

Answer
There is a way to create "floating" video projections like that, but it is NOT a hologram. A hologram is a very specific way to create a an image which can be viewed as 3D. The 3D image in a hologram is not projected like we see in the movies. By splitting a laser beam and illuminating film with one beam and reflecting the other off an object onto the film you essentially take a picture of the interference of the light waves. By viewing this interference pattern (by looking into the "film", not above or beside it) you see an image of the original object which you can look around and view from multiple angles providing that you are always looking into the interference pattern. This creates a very realistic 3D image. That image though, is not projected anywhere. It never leaves the "film".

The "problem" with the mist projection systems is that making the image 3D is harder to pull off. The one system that I'm aware of creates an invisible "screen" of mist that the image is projected onto. The image is floating in the air and you can touch it, but it's still a flat image. Making an actual 3D image with depth is harder.

Replace bulb on rear projector HDTV or buy new TV?

Nitesh

I'm trying to decide if I should replace the bulb in my 2006 rear projection HDTV, or just get a new LCD or plasma. The bulb will probably cost me 150-200. It's a Sony KF-50WE620 set, a 50" 720p/1080i tv. The performance was decent, my main gripe was it's lack of ports, it had no HDMI ports, just one DVI and a bunch of component.

The bulb would be much cheaper than a new TV even with their falling prices of course, but then with something this old I don't know if something else will fail early, or how long the replacement bulb will last. If anything beyond the bulb goes it's almost certainly not worth replacing.

Thoughts? And if I do get a new set, what are the best affordable ones in about the same size? I take it LCDs and Plasmas have somewhat converged in performance?
Ehh, not to sure about projectors due to the location (too much light), plus even the best home projectors can't match the quality of actual TVs.

Answer
I wouldn't get a new bulb. The age of your tv points to it's starting to fail in other areas as well. So try selling it as is on craigslist.

Then I'd go with an LED by Samsung. There are cheaper makes out there, but for a really good quality picture and good tv, go with Samsung.

Are NEC projectors good?

Arcane

I am going to buy an NEC projector. It has 2600 lumens, 2000:1 contrast ratio, 3500 hours of lamp life (5000 in eco mode). It comes with a remote, lens cap, manuals, power cables. The projector is on sell for $300. It is usually $400. Is that a bad deal? <(>.<)>

Answer
NEC is a name brand for business projectors. You don't say what resolution it is, but if it's 800x600 or better $300 is a pretty fair price. See the link for list of NEC projectors on a site with lot's of reviews and information. You can see how your proposed model stacks up.

Projector: dreamland 973?

mrc489

I'm looking for a projector for home use and the occasional drive in senario. I found a dreamland 973 for $250 but I'm not sure if I should get it. Judging by the lumens and the contrast ratio it seems pretty good. It says it has 5000 hour bulb life. Is this projector worth the money?
I found that it has a 800:1 contrast ratio. If this isn't my best bet for the money then what is? Any recommendations? I'm not trying to spend more than $300

Answer
NO.

Here are the specs I found on this unit:

Projection System
LCD Projection
Control Panel
Manual and Remote Control
Resolution
640 x 480 pixels - SEE THIS, Very LOW Resolution.
The picture will be extremely pixelized.
Brightness
2000 lumens
Contrast Ratio
600:1
Aspect Ratio
4:3 and 16:9

Unfortunately, under $300 you'll find that your choices are limited.

For the money though, you should get buy. Don't expect high quality.

Good luck.

HID's and aftermarket projector headlamps?

Ramon

I bought some projector headlights for my 2000 chevy silverado. The headlights use the H1 instead of the regular ones. I was wondering if I could use an HID kit on them?

Answer
You can use the HID kit with the bulbs in the form of H1 bulbs. Check first with seller. Another issue is understanding if it has the high beam solution and of what kind (some kits don't have it).

How to adjust projector headlights?

kickercomp

I have an 04 chevy silverado and I installed projector headlights but they did not come with any instructions on adjusting them. Could someone please help me. Someone who has gone through this with a chevy would be nice. Thanks for your time.

Answer
Just like any other headlamp assembly, there should be adjusting screws somewhere on the back of the housing.

problem connecting macbook aluminum to projector?

Ms.Justice

I connected my mac to a projector and I opened my Keynote presentation. I put the slideshow on but the projector is projecting the two little boxes with my keynote presentation slides. one is the present slide and the other box if what the next slide is going to be??? what do I do to make the projector project a fullscreen slideshow of my keynote presentation.

Answer
Click on the Help menu in Keynote and type PROJECTOR into the search field. You'll see several choices, including the text that I've pasted below.

Your issue seems to be a "mirroring" vs. "dual display" issue.

-----
Viewing a Presentation on an External Display or Projector

Seeing your slideshow and presenter information (notes and a clock, for example) on one screen, while viewers see only the slideshow on a different screen, is called a dual display configuration.
You canât use a dual display configuration on some notebook computers; you have to play the identical slideshow on both screens (called video mirroring). If you have less than 32 MB of video random access memory (VRAM) on your computer, you may have to use video mirroring to display your slideshow on an external projector. See Configuring Video Random Access Memory (VRAM) and Tips for Using an External Display for more information.
To view a presentation using dual displays:

Connect the second display or projector according to the instructions that came with the display or projector and the instructions that came with your computer.
See Tips for Using an External Display for some setup recommendations.

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Displays.
>>> make sure "Show displays in menu bar" is checked = very handy!!
Click Arrange and follow the onscreen instructions.
If there is no Arrange button, your computer detects only one display.

Make sure Mirror Displays is not selected.
Choose Keynote > Preferences and then click Slideshow.
Select âPresent on primary displayâ or âPresent on secondary display.â
The primary display is the one with the menu bar. If you choose âPresent on secondary display,â you can customize what the presenter sees on the primary display. See Customizing the Presenterâs View.

Click Play in the toolbar.
Advance through the presentation by clicking the mouse or pressing the Space bar. See Controlling a Presentation with the Keyboard for other options.

i just bought an infocus lp650 projector for a little under 600.00 is that a good deal?

ernesto o

the projector has only 15hrs on a 2000 hour bulb are these good projectors? thanks ..whats the best projector for this price?

Answer
In Focus make some very good projectors so it's certainly a "brand name".

The LP650 is an older projector originally selling for over $3000. That said, projector prices have dropped in the last couple of years, so a new projector with equivalent performance would be in the $1000 range.

The specs (DLP, 1024x768, 2500 lumens, 800:1 CR, 1.4:1 zoom, component and digital input (M1), 35/33 dB noise) are a bit of a mix today. The digital and component capability are good, so is the high brightness level, but fan noise is a bit high and contrast ratio is weak in today's world (That said the rated 800:1 is quite possibly comparable to projectors today rated at 2000:1 or even more due to the lack of standard methadology).

I can't comment whether the DLP colour wheel speed will be high enough to minimize the possibility of inducing "rainbow effect" (look elsewhere on the site at the 1st link for further info) if you are susceptible. Older projectors sometimes had slow wheels (less than 4X) that increased the chance ... but most people are not particulelry sensitive, so it may be entirely a non issue. On a positive point DLP projectors arguably have better longivity than LCD projectors.

Yoiu could probably get a projector with 800x600 resolution for $300-$400, but what you have is a name brand projector, that should work well in a home theatre environment (depending on video processing capability ... but IF are well respected in general).

Considering a new lamp is $550 from at least one source (2nd link), I think you got a fair deal (It wouldn't have been if it were an old lamp). That said ... read the 3rd link on how to maximize lamp life.

What Home Theatre Projector has the cheapest bulb to replace?

Clayton A

I would like to purchase a projector with at least 800x600 that has a bulb replacement cost of under $100.
A friend told me that such a projector exists, but have yet to find it.
I also would like the projector to be less than $600.

Answer
I would like to find a cheap bulb for replacement too. Just hope mine never needs to be replaced. As far as you wanting a projector under $600, just remember you get what you pay for. I'm sure you can find one but don't plan on having good results from it.
