Entertainment Projector (Laptop & GameConsole)?

{{Dani}}

Ok so i have been reading about this Discovery Wonderwall Projector for about 60$ on friday. It sounds great but i was wondering how well it works and if anyone can hook it up to a laptop??

Actually, it would do me more help if anyone knows any other entertainment projectors. Honestly I do not want or need a tv, i only play games (PS2 and Wii) and use the interent in my house to stream shows. So honestly if anyone can help me find a cheap projector (under 150$) for this I would be grateful. From what I have heard the wonderwall will not hook up in anyway to my laptop.

Answer
hi dani

i haven't seen the projector in question but honestly - you can forget it. it uses a 50W halogen bulb which will give a very very weak image (even in a totally dark room) and the maximum resolution is
480 x 240 which is very low (your mp3 player probably has better picture quality!).. save your money!

you can pick up a really good DLP projector with 800x600 resolution and around 2000 lumens (bright enough for playing PS2 etc) new for around $300, so on ebay you might pick one up for around $150 etc etc

or go for the new PICO projectors (very small) but again they are poor-quality images and not really bright.. the best i've seen is a laser version

good luck!

Can anyone refer me to a Entertainment Projector under 500 Dollars?

mpkardinal

I really want a projector for my home!!!

Answer
Price Grabber is an awesome site that you can shop from but most importantly they have customer reviews and product info.
I quickly checked it out and found several. You can set parameters like price range on the left of the screen after being directed to the projectors. The price is obtainable but only if you choose not to buy a screen because I've looked into it myself. Screens alone cost a couple hundred bucks I think that special paint is available for walls then projector sizing will not be a problem. Good luck.

what kind of screen gain and color should i get for my boxlight pro4500DLP projector?

AKG

I need to know what color, like: gray, silver, or white. and i need to know what kind of screen gain, like should i get one that has a 1 gain or more like 1.8.

My projector has anywhere from 2000 to 5000 lumens and is a dual lamp. Plus it has a contrast ratio from 800 to 1000.

screen distance is 3.8 ft to 44 ft
and can produce a screen from 30 in to 300 in.

Please let me know asap ive never had a projector before thank You.... im a college kid and im ancy to put it up in my house......! Thank You

Answer
Screen gain info from http://www.projectorcentral.com/projector_screens_gain.htm:

"In conference rooms and classrooms where you want some lights on and most of the seats can be positioned within the screen's narrow cone of reflectance, high gain screens (above 1.0) can be quite effective in boosting image brightness. However, the videophile looking for the optimum image quality in a home theater environment will usually want to opt for a low gain screen (below 1.0)."

Screen color info from http://www.projectorcentral.com/white_gray_projection_screens.htm:

"Do you plan to have a dark theater room, with dark walls, ceilings, furniture, carpets? Do you plan to view with no ambient light in the room, just as in a commercial movie theater? If the answer to these questions is yes, then by all means your best solution is a white screen with a high contrast projector. The true videophile will go to great lengths to establish these viewing conditions-this is classic high-end home theater at its best.

However, most home theater enthusiasts don't have the luxury of a dedicated, fully darkened viewing room. Projection systems are frequently set up in living rooms, multi-purpose entertainment rooms, and family rooms that have light colored walls, ceilings, drapes, etc. Thus, even when the lights are fully off, the light being reflected from the screen will bounce off of the reflective elements in the room and back onto the screen. In this situation, a gray screen will be more effective at killing this incident light and thus maintaining deeper black levels on the screen. "

HDTV for 12 x 14 conference room - for computer?

KingGeist

First of all I am needing an HDTV for a conference room 12ft by 14ft. The first sitting chair around a racetrack table will be approx 3 ft from the wall mounted HDTV while the last chair will be approx 9 ft from the HDTV. My laptop that I am using already has an HDMI port built into so here are my questions:

Note: The primary use will be for power point presentations and occasional training DVDs or even web browsing. This will not be used by employees to watch Blu-Ray DVDS (hopefully!)

1) What size HDTV should I purchase?

2) What resolution - 720p or 1080p?

Answer
You need to quit being a homo and using yahoo answers.

- for a conference room 720p will be fine. Question is, most stuff these days is 1080i. So really it doesn't matter.

And you don't need a tv, you need a projector.

I would look into the dell ones since that I what I use at work for the exact setup as you. They have auto shutdown, more connections than you would need for hooking up to a laptop. Furthermore, they look pretty good.

The autoshutdown feature is nice because those bulbs get really hot and wear out pretty fast. Also, understand that you will be replacing a projector bulb faster that you thought. Our 2 at work are used pretty much daily and we have to replace the bulbs about every 1.5yrs.

You will also need to get a screen or build one that is 12x14.

I like to buy a 3d projector what do i need to watch 3d movies?

Tico

Need help

Answer
There is not many 3D projectors in the market place yet. They are also more expensive than your standard 3D tv. Beside that you can only watch blu ray disc movies on it, it does not have a tv tuner to watch tv program. Your room also will have to be dark for it to be effective. Most of all the lamps only last about 2,000 hours of use. So will need a 3D blu ray disc player, a 3D movie and a surround sound system. Most 3D software in the market today are animated movies and there are only about 40 titles in the market. Those cheap projectors do not last. Keep in mind you get what you pay for. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on 3D as well as other equipment. Hope this will help you out.

would i be able to watch 3d movies and 3d games on this projector?

genba

i am looking at this one for my ps3, http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=3d+projector&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=17962634555824001487&ei=aSTfTJahGIWBlAfa8-nFAw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CHYQ8wIwBQ#

or this one
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=3d+projector&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=17065688081289240689&ei=aSTfTJahGIWBlAfa8-nFAw&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CF0Q8wIwAA#

if neither of these will support ps3 3d, does anyone know of a projector that will, ( 720p or better under 800$ and over 2-2.5k lumni)

Answer
No, you will not be able to watch 3D movies or play 3D video games on this projectors. The 3D technology is still new and not all manufacturer have come to one standard in making 3D tv. You are going to need the following to have 3D: 3D tv, 3D blu ray disc player, 3D movies and 3D glasses. Keep in mind that there are only about 25 3D movies in the market today and they are animated. They up coming new release will be tied in only to a purchase of a new 3D tv. Projectors are not ideal for gaming, they are more expensive when you get a 1080P than a flat panel tv. The lamp on the projector is only rated at 2,000 hours of use then you have to replace it, and the cost to replace a lamp can start at $50 to $300 each. Compare that to a flat panel tv that is rated at 60,000 hours. You also need a dark room for a projector and also need a projector screen. They are only handful of projectors that are capable of the 3D and the 1080P none 3D starts at around $1,500. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on projectors. Hope this will help you out.

what is the best projector on the market?

neville d

as we are a projector hire business we always like to find out from users of projectors what is the best projector for us to buy and have on the hire stock www.proscreens.co.uk . also we are happy to help people with there setups

Answer
First it would depend on the format in which your trying to reproduce, film or digital media. There are professional models that are going to be far superior to consumer models, Many people still feel fiim still looks better then digital and I would still have to agree. The Imax digital is the only thing that challenges the very best in film. I would probably guess that the Imax model projectors are among some of the best.

For consumer models your going to get a wide range of opinions on which is the best. I have installed and calibrated some of the very finests and all of them have different aspect that each one excels at. Some experts still agree that CRT projectors properly calibrated offer a more realistic picture, more film like. For consumer models Ampro, Barco, Vidikron, Runco and Sony were considered by many the best in CRT projectors.

Of course CRT projectors are not convenient and often fall out of calibration, so the DLP, LCD became more practical for consumers and needed only a one time calibration.

For todays home theaters most specialist are using, Runco, Vidikron, JVC, and Sony. For myself I would also put Barco on that list. There are a number of smaller brand projectors out there that I have no experience in that might also be highly considered.

For a high quality consumer setup I would probably recommend to go with one of the SC Runco projectors with the anamorphic lense, setup on a Stewart 2:35 aspect ratio film screen.

What is the best HD projector on the market?

Bobsy

Looking to spend no more than £800 ($1600) and is needed to cover a very large wall and still look sharp.

Answer
If you mean 1080p, prices are still beyond your limit (The cheapest is about $2600 US).

But if you mean 720p, there are a number of good models in the $1000 - $1500 range (although $2000-$2500 offers a few even better).

BTW, I'm not very familiar with UK prices, but my suspicion is they are a bit higher than in North America ... so you may have to adjust accordingly.

That all said, you can expect to be able to display a pretty sharp image (from a viewing distance of 2X screen width) on a 90"-120" (diagonal screen).

Note that screens can cost as much or more than your projector budget so you should plan to make your own for less than $100 (See AVS forum's DIY screen section (first link). Either paint a wall with a very light grey paint or use "blackout cloth" (white, slightly stretchy curtain liner) on a wood frame).

In terms of models, have a look at the highly rated models at projector central (see link) and find one available in the UK. For a start have a look at the Optoma HD70 (3rd link).

You can do what you want within your stated budget ... but you will have to make a few compromises and therefore you need to educate yourself before making a buying decision. So read as much as you can on projectors (there's lots of useful info on Projector Central and projector reviews (last link)).

Smallest bezel 1200p monitor?

Jeff G

I want to run quadruple monitors and I need monitors that can support a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and have a displayport interface. I want the smallest bezel possible so they'll look nice next to each other.

Answer
You will find fewer 1200p, next step up is the 2560x1600 ultra high resolution monitors. But official HD is 1920x1080 so most makers have those. If you run higher pixel count on the monitors, you will need more capable video card(s)--2GB VRAM and perhaps 2 or more cards in the MB.
The DisplayPort interface on a monitor might be difficult. You can get just as good by using a DisplayPort out from video card, adapter to HDMI or DVI dual link, and feed monitors that.
Thinner bezels are only available from a few makers--Samsung has one down to 6mm. http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LS23MUQHB/ZA
http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LS23MURHB/ZA
LG and NEC could have some by now.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/07/lg-ea93-29-inch-ultrawide-lcd-monitor-shipping/
http://www.staples.com/Lenovo-LI2721s-27-inch-Wide-IPS-LED-Backlight-Monitor/product_140302?cid=PS:GooglePLAs:140302&KPID=140302
Please be informed that if there is an extremely narrow plastic border around the edge of the screen (only 2mm!) when the screen is OFF, you will see it is much wider when the picture is ON. The panel makers have to do some edge connections and strengthening behind the front cover glass. All super thin bezels are not the same!
You can cut the gap in half by doing overlaps--yes one will be in front of its neighbor by a half inch. If you sit about six feet away that will not be so noticeable. And your brain starts to ignore the black borders after a little bit.
Some tricks to erase bezels entirely were done by the BugEye units, http://bugeyetech.com/?page_id=384
the superwide Alienware curved display, http://www.desktopreview.com/default.asp?newsID=868 but this seems to be a type of projection display. It has 3 OLED type panels with lenses and mirrors in back of a translucent screen. The curvature is so bad that focus suffers.
There is another maker with a special glass overlay with a linear lens. The standard monitor is underneath, the lens spreads edge pixels sideways to blend to the next screen (software compensates to smooth the image without distortion).
The cheapest way is for projection and end blending. I did that about 40 years ago with still and movie projectors in theaters. Now video projection can do that quite well, but not at highest resolution yet. You can get some 720p video projectors for about $460 each at http://www.amazon.com/Optoma-HD66-Lumens-Theater-Projector/dp/B002ZWU33U/ref=dp_ob_title_ce or older used ones for about $300 each.
There are some 1080p ones out too for more: http://www.samsclub.com/sams/viewsonic-1080p-dlp-home-theatre-projector/prod3000469.ip?refcd=GL05251200010030&pid=_CSE_Google_PLA_Office-Supplies&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=sku3404465S

Need help choosing in ceiling speakers and subwoofter for a theater room?

Daniella

My husband and I recently added on a theater room and we are just learning about audio systems. We purchased the DENON AVR-2312CI receiver and an Epson 8350 projector. The room measures 16x20 and we have connections for 6 in ceiling speakers. We plan to buy 5 speakers. Can anyone recommend good speakers and a subwoofer based on this informaiton? We are hoping to spend around $100 per speaker. Not sure of our budget on the subwoofer yet since we haven't done any research. The less we can spend the better as this room is becoming very expensive! I came across the Polk Audio 50-RT speakers for $109 which seem pretty good. I can't find any reviews on them since they are so new. We also looked at the Yamaha NS Series 3-Way In Ceiling Speakers but read on a review website they are aging technology. Does anyone have an opininon on these speakers or other speakers? We could use some advice on a subwoofer too.

Answer
I really can't help you any with ceiling speakers because that's really not the way to go with a home theatre. It looks like you are putting together a nice little media room and I just hate to see you go to all that trouble and expense and end up with an inferior movie experience. Having a home theatre can be a lot of fun, all your friends will want to come over for a, "movie night". I do this all the time, friends come over, we BBQ something out on the patio, chow down, then head upstairs to the theatre for a movie. Some of my friends are of the opinion that a movie hasn't come out yet until it comes out on Blu-Ray in my home theatre, commercial cinemas including I-Max don't count. The sound quality in commercial cinema's is just too poor, the seats are less comfortable, and of course the home cinema has the advantage of a pause button;-)

No ceiling speaker no matter how good is going to match the performance of a good free standing speaker. The problem is that it's going to cost you more so an already mounting budget is going to have to go yet a little higher. The advantage is a much more enjoyable movie experience and friends saying, "we have to do this again soon" after the movie instead of, "well it's late....". You already have a decent little entry level AVR, you have a nice little projector, and you're going to connect it to ceiling speakers:-(

You didn't mention what you are planning to do for a screen, there are lots of DIY options for making your own screen that will save a lot of money that could be redirected toward better speakers. You can buy bulk screen material and stretch your own screen over a frame... http://store.cousinsvideo.com/cut-to-size.html

Choosing free standing speakers is going to be the hard part especially on a limited budget. The loudspeakers are the most subjective part of the system so listening to them yourself is paramount. There are some definite wrong solutions. Any of the typical Japanese brands like Sony, Pioneer, etc are wrong solutions. Bose is a definite wrong solution. No commercial speaker product is great in my opinion especially in the mass market (sub $2000 range) and in the ultra-high-end... (over $25,000 range). The low end stuff is too under engineered and too cheaply made and the over $25k range is typically too incorrectly engineered and the price based too much on snob appeal.

There are some options in the few hundred dollar range. Here is one example... http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MRBBX5 along with... http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MRBBXCE and with this subwoofer... http://emotiva.com/ultra_sub12.shtm You can use the little Polk ceiling speakers for surrounds and that will be fine. This system isn't going to get you stellar performance but it will get you a performance level you can be proud of and one that will have your friends constantly asking when's the next movie night. I don't think you will get this with even the best ceiling speakers in the world. You're already putting a lot into this with the AVR, projector, screen, seating, etc etc... You might as well go the extra steps to make it something you can truly enjoy. I know I really enjoy my theatre, it's definitely worth it!

TV Projector vs. an actual TV?

Emma

I want to get this > http://www.ebay.com/itm/V06W-LCD-HOME-THEATER-Projector-Input-Support-1080I-1080P-HDMI-HD-TV-PS3-DVD-LED-/180876953949?pt=US_Video_Projectors&hash=item2a1d1b495d .. but i'm not really sure if the resolution will be good enough for the xbox 360 I'm going to get. I don't know if I'll be able to like read words or see anything with it. But I only have enough money for like a 19" tv. Which... isn't very big. Should I risk it and buy the projector? Just for the sake of having a badass gaming setup?

Answer
Stay away from this projector it is waste of money. It can take HD signals, but it down-samples to 640x480 which is horrible. Think 8-bit Nintendo horrible.

A decent HD projector costs about $1000, and even then should only be used in a room where there is very little light. You'd be better off with cheap HDTV for your gaming system.

What is, for the money, the best home movie projector?

Chesterkat

I'm getting a new apartment and I want a projector with the same quality as a tv.

Answer
Bar none the following projectors â all âFull-HDâ, native 1080p designs â currently offer the best performance and value for the money.

Ultimate AV Review - Mitsubishi HC5000 LCD Projector
http://www.ultimateavmag.com/videoprojectors/107mits5000/

Of the current crop of ALL high definition projectors the Sony VPL-VW50 âPearlâ SXRD, the Panasonic PT-AE1000U, and the Mitsubishi HC5000 home theater projectors are arguably three of the best buys at the present time, selling for discounted prices of approximately $4300, $4000 and $4500 respectively. Even at the MSRP of $6300 the JVC DLA-RS1 or DLA-HD1 D-ILA Home Theater Projectors are a bargain for the level of performance they provide.

Projectors and apartments are a fairly unusual combination due to a variety of viewing room constraints associated with apartments. Nevertheless the best choice, especially for apartment use, will be a âFull-HDâ, native1080p projector with the goal of viewing as much source material as possible in the form of 1080p video; 720p being the next best choice. If you'll be viewing a lot of 480-line video source material (DVD-Video, SDTV, etc.,) you will need to make sure you're using equipment that can effectively upscale 480-line video source material to not less than the native resolution of your projector, preferably 720 pixels or greater.

When shopping for a projector I highly recommend that you carefully audition each projector using ALL of the video sources similar to what you will regularly be using, particularly if you will be watching predominantly non-HD video.

You will also need to take into consideration the cost of purchasing a quality projection screen from a company such as Stewart Filmscreen, Da-Lite, Draper, or DNP. For an apartment I would recommend a (16:9) screen no larger than 82-inches (diag.) with a gain no higher than 1.3; if you feel you need a screen with more gain then there may be too much ambient light and you would be better off choosing an alternative to a front projector. Of all the current display technologies front projectors are the most demanding of the viewing environment.

Last but not least you will also need to consider the proper viewing distance(s) for the type of source material you will be viewing. (For more info on proper viewing distances please read my replies from the Yahoo! Answers links below.) If you sit too close you will be constantly distracted by visible picture structure such as individual scan lines or pixels in the video image. Generally the higher the resolution the closer you will be able to sit to the screen before picture structure will become a serious problem.

In June of this year Sony plans to release two new 1280Ã720, 3LCD-based, video projectors: the BRAVIA VPL-AW15 and VPL-AW10. The 3LCD equipped BRAVIA VPL-AW15, featuring "auto iris mode" and lens shift along with an estimated retail price of $1,300, may provide consumers an unprecedented price-to-performance ratio in the 1280Ã720 projector range.

Do you know of an true HD native 1080p projector that is under a $1,000?

Samuel W.

I have been looking a lot at the optoma hd65 i know its not native 1080p though. but its on sale for $580. Otherwise the new optoma hd20 which is native 1080p and the bulb is $80 less than the hd65 series. Do you know of any other projectors that you could throw our their for me to look at. With a good bulb price, under a 1000, and has to have the ability to do 1080p. I would prefer native otherwise native 720p is ok with a max resolution of 1080.

I am really struggling on a decision to make here. I have researching so many hours. Any insight, or advice?
I think I am going to go with the Vivitek H1080. It has a better contrast, higher uniformity and seems to be overall better than the optoma for the same price.

Answer
The only one 1080p projector that is under a $1,000 that I found is Vivitek 1800 Lumen 1080p Home Theater Projector but this item is not release now or if you can pay more than $1000 then Optoma HD20 is a good choice

Going to buy a projector. Which is the best for under $1,000?

Dom

I am really looking into one to use for TV and video games. So when purchasing, what specs are important to look at? Any recommendations as to what you like?

Answer
For $1000 bucks you can do quite well with a 720p HD pj. Just make sure the native resolution is at least 1024 X 768 and then get the highest Lumen and Contrast available in that native resolution.

Epson, BenQ and Optoma are my favorites and you can find plenty of great deals at www.tigerdirect.com

Could you recommend a movie theater quality projector?

Cami!

I need a really good movie theater quality projector that I can hook up to a blu ray player, with of course, pretty big projection, maybe about half the size of a theater screen, if you could recommend a good one, that would be great, because I have no idea what I'm doing! Ha, thanks (:
Okay, maybe not totally movie theater quality, I didn't realize projectors were so expensive, I was hoping for something under 1,000 dollars! If anybody could recommend a decent one around that price, that'd be nice (:

Answer
dont get the projector you can actually purchase a 70" sony xbr7
kdl70xbr7 its only about 17k right now. For a really really good quality projector and high quality screen(movie theatre quality you will be looking at near 20k anyway.) or you can get a good sharp 65" lcd for like 5k lc65se94u or lc65d64u

projectors for outdoor cinema?

Eric O

http://www.openaircinema.us/info/elite/pact_show/id_19385372/

i found this website which sells the whole kit (is it good value for money?) - looking at the projector specifically, is 3500 lumens sufficient for a 20' screen in a relatively light-pollution-free area?
these things go up to 10.000 lumens and more, and their price proportionally - which would be the best adapted in your opinion?
Also, the projector has to work in a relatively humid environment - think Orlando by a lake. And give good screen resolution from DVD source

Answer
To pull this off, you will basically need three things:

A big enough screen that is made for outdoors. It will need to be stable in the wind. That is the hard part.

A nice bright projector (depends on the screen size. 5K lumens will probably be minimum).

A professional sound system.

You best bet is to hire an AV staging and rental company to do the whole thing. If you are going to do this on a regular basis, they can help you with purchasing the equipment and setting it up permanently.

There are plenty of companies in your area that can help you with this. Try the Yellow Pages under "Audio Visual" or "Audio Video".

How to setup Projector home theater?

nanko

Hello I am planning to buy Epson Home theater projector, Receiver and speaker set. The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 5030UBe comes with wireless HDMI transmitter. DVD, Cable HDMIs can be connected to small device which in turn wirelessly transmit HDMI to receiver built-in projector. My question is how do I channel out audio to my speakers using the wireless HDMI option?? The other option is I input all HDMIs in to my receiver.. and output HDMI to the wireless transmitter.

Answer
Just hook your source sound output to your amp, to your speakers. The projector is just a monitor. Why pass any sound through it at all? PS: Zip chord is a lot cheaper than blue tooth junk, and doesn't require batteries, special speakers, good reception, or any of that carble farb. I wouldn't get a projector that had anything else built into it, as the projector needs to be positioned to throw an image, which is not likely where you want your player or sound cabling to come from or be kept.

How do I setup my projector to my laptop?

Squishy M

I've already got and set up the chords but the only thing that the projector shows is fuzzy.

Does BenQ make good projectors?

joe m

Im looking to use it for the ps3 mostly but this company seems to cater towards the home theater with hdmi inputs and such but do they work well and last long, anyone have one?

Answer
BenQ does make a very nice projector based on DLP technology. If you are subject to RBE(rainbow effect) I would suggest a LCD or LCOS based projector at a much lower price range than BenQ, but would still offer you an exceptional picture. Some of those models would be the Sony HW10, the new Panny 3000U, the Epson 1080UB and in the higher price range JVC HD1/HD100 models, Sony VW60/70. All of these are full HD projectors with the ones mentioned earlier being cheaper in price.

Good luck and enjoy.

Are there any 4k home theater projectors?

Smyth

If so, what are their advantages since Blu-ray movies are limited to 1920x1080? What are some considerations to take into account when considering one?

Answer
JVC and Meridian Audio are the only two manufacturers of which Iâm aware that are currently producing high-end â4Kâ video projectors targeted specifically for the home theater market. Sony, Barco, Christie Digital, and others are targeted for professional or commercial applications, including Digital Cinema. Pricing for the current crop of 4K (home theater) projector systems is well beyond the mainstream consumer home theater market.

âWhat are their advantages since Blu-ray movies are limited to 1920x1080?â

4K projectors designed for home theater use will upscale all non-4K video source material to 4K resolution much as high-definition TVâs, monitors, projectors, and BD players do with SDTV and DVD-Video source material. I am not aware of any commercial native 4K video content currently available to consumers.

âWhat are some considerations to take into account when considering one?â

The obvious is cost - the cost to purchase the projection system as well as the total cost of ownership (TCO), which includes maintenance, servicing, power consumption, (e.g. the JVC and the Meridian 4K projectors consume up to 1500 watts each,) thermal management, (i.e. cooling,) operating noise, and installation. Both projectors also require the use of DVI-D connectors â there are no HDMI connectors.

Vivitek Projector H1080FD vs. Optoma Projector HD20. Which one is better?

Dutch D

they are both $999
for an xbox 360

Answer
Neither professional projector review group have yet looked at the Vivitek. The Optoma has been reviewed by both (see links) and looks like a fairly good, but not outstanding, intro 1080p projector. I suggest you wait for the reviews on the Vivitek before deciding.

That said, no-one is going to be able to tell you which is better. Before buying any projector it's advisable to evaluate your needs/preferences since each projector has pros and cons relative to another, and a strength or a weakness can be unimportant or critical for certain users. The best choice is rarely simply a matter of cost and resolution.

Projectors?

Pasky M

I have a few questions about projectors, I am going to get one to put in my room that I want to hook my computer up to to play games on a huge screen, i want to wathc movies on it through my computer, and I want to be able to watch local t.v. chaneels on it somehow. (my budget is I'm trying to keep it under $1000 including projection screen; I already have a sound system so that's not in my budget)

Q1: What projector should I get?
Q2: I get that the amount of lumens means how bright it can get, so what would be a good amount of lumens?
Q3: What would be a good contrast ratio? (I know the higher the better, but what is minimum amount the projector should have?)
Q4: What brand?
Q5: Where should I get it (Newegg, Bestbuy, Tigerdirect?)
Q6: Is a projector worth it instead of a tv? (I have enough space for up to 200 inches, so I thought a projecter would be a good idea, because then I could roll up the screen when I didn't need, and use the space, and it's cheaper than a big t.v.)
Ummmmm.. one thing I forgot is: is there anyway I can hook my projector up to local t.v.? (like bunny ears). I also understand that all t.v. will be digital by february of next year, so could I use a digital box to get local channels to play on my projecter?

Answer
Lets see If I can help

Q1: What projector should I get?

You want to make sure that the pj you get has a native resolution of at least 1280 X 720 so you can experience 720p HD. You should be able to find one for less than $800 and I actually just picked up an Optoma HD70 for about $650 after rebate.

Q2: I get that the amount of lumens means how bright it can get, so what would be a good amount of lumens?

Anything between 1000 and 1200 should be good. You get too many Lumens and you risk washing out the picture.

Q3: What would be a good contrast ratio? (I know the higher the better, but what is minimum amount the projector should have?)

I'd look for at least 2000:1

Q4: What brand?

There a gazillion of them but I prefer Infocus, Optoma or Epson and have had good experiences with all of them.

Q5: Where should I get it (Newegg, Bestbuy, Tigerdirect?)

For gods sake not Best Buy. Personally I have bought a few from Tigerdirect, but before I do I will do a search for the specific item on Yahoo Shopping so I can compare all of the online prices.

Q6: Is a projector worth it instead of a tv?

Absolutely! Watching HD on the big screen will BLOW YOU AWAY! I have been slowly replacing ALL my TV's with projection

Should I buy a 1080p video projector or 720p one?

seeker

Answer
Considering that you can get a decent 1080P projector for around $3000 to $8000-I recommend that you get the 1080P projector.

The models and maker that I recommend would be:

Epson 1080P
Epson 1080P Pro Cinema
JVC RS1U

You can see the specs on these products at:

www.epson.ca
www.jvc.ca

Just search for them. Now if you are tight on the budget you might consider buying the 720P projectors. There is nothing wrong with the 720p projectors. Your still can see decent pictures with these. Epson should have some models like the Powerlite 810 for this application. The price difference is not that significant. You might as well save up and gurantee in 3 months the price will be reduced again.

What is the best TV to buy if money is no object?

Q.

Answer
IMAX is right! But really, a HDTV 1080P projector setup will be more realistic for a home theater. Look for one that has a high contrast ratio, and a high lumen output. A good 1080P projector is the JVC DLA-RS1.

Good luck.

Video projector or tv?

Jason

Ok here it is im debating on whether to get a projector that will be used as a tv, or a lcd tv. I am willing to spend around $500. Also, with the projector is there a need to buy speakers? After your choice if you can will you make a suggestion of the tv or projector? THX

Answer
I own a projector and these are the facts. If you are buying new do not get a projector because 500 dollars is not enough and you will not be happy. Also keep in mind that the room has to be somewhat dark to see the image. All projectors use a bulb that lasts around 3000 hours and then it needs to be replaced. Mine went out yesterday and will cost 465 dollars to replace.
Projectors only show an image. You usually have to have a digital box from your tv provider to make a connection and will have to have some sort of Stereo system for sound. In order to get a quality projector you need to visit higher end store like ultimate electronics or get one used on Ebay or Craigslist. Take some time and visit the different stores by you. If the store doesn't have it on display for you to see the picture than chances its not what you are looking for.

Looking to buy a Good projector thats not so expensive?

kerse l

Hi everyone im looking to buy a projector for home use to watch movies with my family on movie nights. I am looking for a good qaulity one that is not so expensive. Looking to spend $500 or less. Open to opinions and advice. thanks

Answer
With that budget it's going to be tough unless you look for used. The Projector Central web site is a good resource. http://www.projectorcentral.com/home-theater-multimedia-projectors.htm They give top ten list in this link but the cheapest one in the 720p category list for $604. http://www.projectorcentral.com/Optoma-HD65.htm You might be able to get a deal on it someplace. I don't know how good it is. It is noisy at 29 dB and with limited contrast ratio at 4000:1. You may want to think about the noise level, 29 dB is pretty loud during quiet scenes in the movie.

There are a lot of considerations. What do you plan to use for a screen? Screen material comes in different gain and viewing angle so you need to first look at your room and determine what you need. How far off axis will the worst case viewing position be? What are your lighting conditions? Viewing distance? Projector Central has an online calculator you should use before deciding how many lumens brightness you need and what screen gain you need. http://www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm You can save money on a screen by buying the screen material and stretching it onto your own frame. http://store.cousinsvideo.com/cut-to-size.html This will save you a lot of money over buying a screen! Here is my own DIY screen... http://www.mfk-projects.com/theatre_screen.htm

It takes a bit of research to figure it all out. I knew absolutely nothing about projectors and screens when I started drawing up my own home theater but it was definitely a learning experience. If you take the time to study web sites like Projector Central and do a lot of googling home theater projects you can develop a lot of good ideas. The ultimate is to add an anamorphic lens and do a 2.4:1 screen but that's really going to throw you out of budget. It's something to consider though, a good home theater is a really enjoyable thing to have.

Hopefully Kevin L. will see this question and offer his thoughts. He knows a lot more about projector selection than I do. All I know is what I learned along the way building my theater. http://www.mfk-projects.com/home_theatre.htm

If you can tell me thanks!

Answer
It's a DLP projector with a color wheel speed of 2X which unfortunately does not prevent viewing "rainbow" images; even in games. I'd pass on this projector and go for at least a 4X speed color projector. Check out a refurbished Infocus SP4805 4X projector at amazon.com which sells for around $570. Here's the URL:

It comes with a built-in speaker. Read the 15 Customer Reviews.

And here's an actual 96" diagonal movie image [A Good woman].

what is a good projector for an xbox 360 elite thats has hdmi? around $600-700?

Nathan D

Answer
there is not a projector that is going to be good with any game system for $700 because of the lag that comes with the HD and the projector it self. If your just looking for one to play films on any one will do but if you wanna play games you may want to rethink why. I have a $2,500 200in HD projector its great for films and i play random party games but if i wanna play Tekken or anything that requires reaction time which is most games i play on the classic tube tv and you don't wanna drop $700 bucks then realize you cant play on it but as far as i know there is not a good projector for $700 i have only been able to find them for around 1,000

How to make a smartboard with ipad, LCD projector and apple tv?

Q. I have an Ipad, nad LCD projector that has HDMI connection and I have a normal Tablet in my classroom. now is It really poosbile to make a smartboard with those 3 things?

pls someone that know the answer answer me. if not , how do i make a smartboard ?

Answer
You can connect your projector to your iPad with the Apple Digital AV Adapter ($39 through Apple Store). This will show your iPad content like slides, movies, photos on the projector. Smartboards generally do more than this though, they allow you to interact with the image, and usually save that interaction in some way. No way to do this without a projector with the proper sensors or without some kind of Microsoft Kinect-like device to give feedback of what you're doing. If you want something easy and reliable, best to stick to an actual smartboard.

Can I use a projector with an ipad?

pamv

Is there a way to use a projector with an iPad? I need to show a sales team how to use an iPad and would like to be able to connect it to a projector so that they can see it on an enlarged screen.

Answer
Yes. You'll need Apple's dock to HDMI adapter, but it can be done as long as that projector has a DVI or HDMI port on it.

Macbook Pro to a projector: vga or dvi adapter?

Q. For my health presentation,we're using my macbook pro (has mini display port) using keynote (not powerpoint).I want to connect it to the projector. But I don't know if I should buy a vga adapter or dvi one. Please help me!And where do I get them?

Answer
It depends on the projectorâwhat type of input does it use? You want to get the cable to match.

Most of the projectors I've run across have taken VGA, so the chances are good that would work. But there's no guarantee that any given type of cable will work unless you know what you're hooking it up to.

As to where to buy them? They're available from a number of sources (Apple stores, electronics stores, etc.). I've put links below to the page for each type of cable on Amazon.

what keys to press to connect macbook pro to projector under windows?

Q.

Answer
Now since I do not know what the Windows button is registered under for the Mac keyboard I am going to give you an alternative which is to go to the start menu and search up "Connect to a Projector" and it should pop up, it gives you 4 alternatives, the first one being automatically chosen, duplication means that the projector will basically show the same screen you see, extension means the projector will act like a secondary monitor, and the final one will make the projector the main screen.

How can I get HD EPL and/or La Liga matches in the US?

ParamountP

I'd like to know how I can get HD quality EPL and/or La Liga matches in the US.

As far as I know my only options through television are Fox Soccer Channel or Setanta Sports. I've never tried Setanta but I know Fox isn't HD.

I wouldn't mind paying for an online subscription, even if it's delayed up to a day.

...I'd like to have some EPL parties and watch some games on an HD projector.

Any ideas?

Answer
I'm afraid you're out of luck for now as far as the EPL is concerned. Setanta in the US is SD only, same as FSC. GolTV, which is the best choice for La Liga, is yet again in SD only, except for one game weekly sublicensed to Voom HD Networks for broadcast on its WorldSportHD channel. Voom channels are available on Dish Network. $30 a month for one game a week seems a bit steep to me.

FSC has repeatedly stated that HD EPL games are coming. However, they are silent as to when that will be. Most observers feel that the first season they will have them will be 2009-2010. So hold tight.

Why does Portal 2 get such a bad rap?

Stuart

I am a valve fanboy. I have played all of their games and beaten most of them, especially all of the Half-life series, and of course, portal. Now Portal 2 has gotten numerous ratings that were good, but I've also noticed there's been quite a few bad reviews. Some were just trolling, but there were quite a few people were saying things like it was only four hours long, or that the story line sucks, but i thought it had the best ending i've seen to a game in a long time, possibly ever, and that it had some awesome cross references to Hl and an awesome storyline. that was the most epic game in a long time that i've played. ( I did play it on a huge projector with hdmi and surround sound. maybe that's why it was so great.)

Answer
(warning, Valve ramble, read if interested, but scroll down to "REAL ANSWER IS HERE" if you want my precise answer.
Finally, a person who appreciates Valve as much as I do! I know that a quality game takes time and effort, Valve will delay a game several times to make sure it's as perfect as they can get it and that it's well worth the money.

I guess I'm pretty new to being a "Valve Fanboy" as you call it. Became a member of Steam October 5th of 2010, during a sale that cut down the price of Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 in a "Left 4 Dead Bundle" for the price of $10.00 Made the purchase and have at least 120 hours on both of them. Later, on March 12, 2011, I anxiously Pre-purchased Portal 2, it also came with the original Portal, which I have 30 hours on. April 13, I purchased Team Fortress 2 for $10.00 (never expected it to become free within the year I purchased it, boy was I frustrated, but TF2 is still worth it). I don't own all the Valve games, and unfortunately haven't even played them all. I hope to change that sometime in the future, as I have never been disappointed in a Valve game.

I played TF2 for about a week, then Portal 2 came really late on a school night-- but I didn't care. I rapidly clicked the button to finish the download and began to play. I didn't get much sleep that night...

After much play I thoroughly enjoyed the game, within a week, I had almost all the achievements, and from then to now, I've played through it about 12 times (guessing on that) and I don't have a problem with it whatsoever (Here's where I get to finally answering after rambling) I can tell, though, why people can hate the game...
~~REAL ANSWER IS HERE~~
Flying through portals, popping out at random places in the room, the puzzles can really get you on the first try. My dad played the first portal a bit and was completely confused, and I'm sure he'd be confused by the sequel. The disorientation that can be involved in Portal 2 bewilders some people and frustrates many others. I personally haven't been disoriented by this game, and it's a good game that gets you thinking, but I completely understand. But as to why the storyline would "suck" makes me curious... How does it suck? Valve, in my opinion, did very well with the story and I thought it was a wonderful way to either end or continue portal (the co-op makes you think there will be another game). Though if they were talking about the Co-op, i would understand that-- the story to the cooperative testing wasn't very clear. Who could possibly get through the main story in 4 hours? Jeez, rushing through the game like that leaves little time to enjoy the clever dialogue or story. The bad reviews, in conclusion, come from people who either can't grasp the concept of portals and gels, button based testing and cute turrets, or genuinely do not like the story. I know that that's entirely possible-- I can't stand Gears of War, but I haven't the faintest idea why and I despise COD BO because the story and multiplayer are just awful (personal opinions that you don't have to agree to) Maybe it's just a personal preference sort of thing.

building home theater in new home....?

Miss Britt

we are moving ain a couple months and my dads a contractor and etc. we have a media room in the plans.
can someone show me some sights to how to design it?? thank you. and any other pointers would help
im going with a enclosed rectangular room with a rectangular projector :]

Answer
Whether you choose to hire an experienced, certified professional* or not I have taken the opportunity to provide some basic suggestions and list a few select resources below. Hopefully this will help provide some ideas or guidance when it comes to building a new home theater. *(If you would like to install any automation I highly recommended that you hire an experienced, certified professional.)

If you would like to create the most immersive, theater-like experience (depending on your budget of course) I strongly recommend that you consider purchasing a high-performance projection system consisting of a home theater projector (such as JVCâs DLA-RS2 Home Cinema Projector,) video processor, and 102- to 120-inch projection screen capable of displaying movies in a more natural anamorphic 2.35:1 aspect ratio âCinemaScopeâ format. When it comes to fixed-frame front projection screens you would be hard-pressed to do better than Stewart Filmscreenâs GrayHawk RS G3 (or StudioTek 130 G3) screen material mounted to Stewartâs curved Cine-W frame or their flat Luxus Deluxe Screenwall frame.

If your budget allows I also recommend complementing your home theater projector with a high-performance LCD HDTV to handle the majority of your television viewing needs. One important benefit of using the two displays is that it would increase the time between service intervals when it comes to projector relamping. This not only reduces the cost of ownership but would also reduce the wear and tear on both displays.

I would like to pass on one important critique with respect to a significant number of home theaters you will see in articles and portfolios: Ideally within an observerâs field of view (FOV), especially for the more critical area commonly referred to as the âsurround,â the room surfaces should be finished or covered with spectrally diffuse and spectrally neutral materials; avoid strong hues at all costs. One of the more effective methods is to use a MATTE gray paint with a Munsell value between N4 and N8. (From darker to lighter: N4 has L*a*b* values of 40, 0, 0 and N8 has L*a*b* values of 80, 0, 0; Note: some prefer to use Kodak 18% gray as a neutral gray reference rather than the Munsell renotation.) The remainder of the room may be safely finished in your choice from any of the Munsell âNearly Neutralâ pastel colors (though a neutral gray will always be ideal.) Using this approach will help maximize the âambient contrastâ of your viewing environment while allowing the maximum color fidelity from your displays.

I also highly recommend that you install plenty of nonmetallic corrugated flexible conduit, aka nonmetallic flexible raceway or innerduct, for all your A/V and structured cabling requirements. Where applicable use low-voltage wall brackets (or boxes,) to which the innerduct may be connected. This will allow you to use a variety of custom and keystone style wallplates, which will provide a high quality, professional finished appearance for all of your A/V and structured cabling connections.

By the way, whenever you are working with exposed wood wall framing, i.e., no gypsum board, it is very important that you ALWAYS install nail-plates (aka Nail Stoppers¹) wherever you drill holes in wood wall framing for the purpose of routing conduit that will be carrying wire and cable. Nail-plates are intended to protect all wire and cable in the conduit from being pierced and damaged by nails and screws that will be fastened to the wall framing.

Good luck.

Pros and cons of high-def home theater wall projectors?

The Killer

Best brands and types. LCD or DLP. Projectors only. No TV answers. Thanks.

Answer
Focus on brightness, resolution, and cost.

Brightness: 1000 - 1500 lumens (1000 is fine if you can make your room totally dark). Make sure the projector is a home theater projector and not a business projector. business projectors are measured in data mode.

Resolution: 720p are the best value right now. 480p projectors will be a little cheaper, but not worth the savings.

Cost: You don't need to pay over $2,000 unless you want 1080p resolution.

-------------------

LCD vs. DLP
It is really a personal choice. DLPs have deeper blacks and the image looks slightly softer, and more colorful. LCDs are true to life color. You'll see more of the details, but the colors are often not as rich. Both will have visible pixel structure if you sit too close, particularly on cheaper ones.

-------------------
Brands
Panasonic is the best selling projector right now, also Mitsubishi and Optoma are popular. But any of the major brands will be good.

This is a great deal!

How do i get my HDMI Projector to display hd?

Dale

I recently purchased a projector. It has vga, s video, and composite video inputs. It is an hdmi projector and says it should display up to 1080i. How do I hook my dvd player/ps3 so it will play hd. To my little knowledge of A/V s video and composite are not capable of carrying hd. Any suggestions would help.

Answer
You're correct that composite and S won't do HD.

1) Are you sure about that "HDMI" tag? HDMI is a cable/socket connection. It's not the same as HD - High Definition. If your projector has just VGA, S-Video and Composite then it doesn't sound like a HD projector to me. A model number would help.

2) 1080i is a HD resolution signal. To get that in to a projector you'll need either a HDMI socket (which it sounds like you haven't got) or, at a push you could use Component if the source device has it as well *and* the signal isn't encrypted for security. Those are really long odds though if you don't live in the USA. You might be lucky with a Sky satellite receiver, but rarely with Blu-ray players. They tend to limit the signal resolution to 480p or 576p with movies on Blu-ray disc. The PS3 will play games out via Component in HD though.

Component looks like these marked Y Pr Pb: http://www.itsacon.net/articles/vidcon/images/RCA_sockets.jpg

3) There's a lot of cheap Chinese rubbish being flogged online. The specs are extremely vague and the blurb seems to promise the earth for a very low price. If it was a new projector just check what you have bought meets the description so you know you haven't bought a lemon.

Good luck

What is a good cheap projector that supports HDMI?

In Love

I am looking to set up a small home theater system in my house and I have all the audio figured out i just need visual. I wasn't going to buy a Flat Screen because those things are way to expensive for me. I was just wondering what is a good projector that supports HDMI and has good response time as well (like for gaming) and preferably 720P. Now maybe i am asking too much and a projector with all that might be as much as a TV but i guess I am just wondering. Thanks in advance! :)
Ohh and another quick thing, it doesnt have to be name brand or look cool or anything it just has to work well and be priced right.

Answer
Typically a flat screen is less money than a projector dollar for dollar. When it comes to projectors there is basically no such thing as cheap if you what just decent quality. Putting it this way, a 50' Plasma TV from Panasonic for $1000 will be way better than any projector you can buy USED for the same money, you will of course get a bigger picture but the quality will be sub par to say the least. Add to this the cost of the screen and replacing $300 bulbs every year or so your "cheap" used projector will cost you way more than a brand new Plasma!

If you are still determined to go projector a good JVC used will be at least $2K... then the bulb replacement and the screen, mounting etc....... go Plasma and save yourself some money.
