im begging my parents to get me a projector for my birthday. i want it to go into my bedroom. it needs to be able to play xbox. size isnt a problem, oh and it needs to be for a resonable price and a tips on the screen would be welcome e.g screen, on a wall, lighting

Sony's newest 1080p projector, the Bravia VPL-HW10, is now available, and it is easily the finest projector from Sony we've yet seen. The HW10 is brighter than previous models by a decent margin, has excellent contrast, open midtones, a sharp picture, and good placement flexibility. Well Iâve concluded after a lot of search that LED projector should atleast be 60 lumens, 500-1 to 1000-1 contrast and should have USB or SD card slot. LED projectors brightness level is somewhat better than the conventional lamp based projectors so anything in the range of 100 lumens in enough. Also the biggest advantage of 20000 to 30000 life hours :-D I am now a happy owner of 'Samsungs sp-p410m' LED projector which is absolutely brilliant. Couldnât find it online in UK so ordered one from Korea :p yep i liked it that much :p it has SVGA 800 x 600 resolution, brightness 170ANSI, 1000-1 contrast ratio and 80 inch projection which looks stunningly bright, vivid and crisp on my not so white wall. oh and it has digital keystone correction too :-D inputs are VGA, composite & USB. its around 750$ but worth the money as it will last for 10 to 15 years. I recommend following in order, but plz give specs a LONG good look:

1-Samsung sp-p410m
2-Benq gp1
3-Toshiba TDP-F10
5-Samsung sp-400
4-Acer K10

Led projectors are very dim... the dimmest on the market. Only useful in a very dark room, & small screen. Resolution is no better than DVD resolution or worse on most of them, except the most expensive.

Led projectors are nowhere near as bright as the dimmest lamp-based projectors. Typical popular normal projectors boast 1600-4200 lumens with a contrast ratio of 2000:1.

LED projectors are 10-60 lumens... About the brightness of a very dim penlight flashlight, & very poor contrast ratios. Brighter ones are just now coming out, but still not good or bright enough to be practical.

For the price, you can get a 1600-2700 lumen DLP projector with a 2000:1 contast ratio. They're small enough to fit at least 2 in 1 backpack.

I typically fit 2 small DVD players, mixer, a laptop, & 1 of my DLP projectors in a backpack.

LED projectors are a portable novelty or toy for those with a disposable income, & not really very useful or practical yet. Wait a few years for the technology to get better.

From my experience with super bright LEDs, & the specs on them, is they grow dimmer with age long before their "lifetime" is up. How useful will that dim overpriced projector be if it's grown too dim to barely be seen after 3,000-5,000 hours?

Notice the LED display on your alarm clock, DVD player or VCR has grown too dim in just a few years?

First it would depend on the format in which your trying to reproduce, film or digital media. There are professional models that are going to be far superior to consumer models, Many people still feel fiim still looks better then digital and I would still have to agree. The Imax digital is the only thing that challenges the very best in film. I would probably guess that the Imax model projectors are among some of the best.

For consumer models your going to get a wide range of opinions on which is the best. I have installed and calibrated some of the very finests and all of them have different aspect that each one excels at. Some experts still agree that CRT projectors properly calibrated offer a more realistic picture, more film like. For consumer models Ampro, Barco, Vidikron, Runco and Sony were considered by many the best in CRT projectors.

Of course CRT projectors are not convenient and often fall out of calibration, so the DLP, LCD became more practical for consumers and needed only a one time calibration.

For todays home theaters most specialist are using, Runco, Vidikron, JVC, and Sony. For myself I would also put Barco on that list. There are a number of smaller brand projectors out there that I have no experience in that might also be highly considered.

For a high quality consumer setup I would probably recommend to go with one of the SC Runco projectors with the anamorphic lense, setup on a Stewart 2:35 aspect ratio film screen.

If you mean 1080p, prices are still beyond your limit (The cheapest is about $2600 US).

But if you mean 720p, there are a number of good models in the $1000 - $1500 range (although $2000-$2500 offers a few even better).

BTW, I'm not very familiar with UK prices, but my suspicion is they are a bit higher than in North America ... so you may have to adjust accordingly.

That all said, you can expect to be able to display a pretty sharp image (from a viewing distance of 2X screen width) on a 90"-120" (diagonal screen).

Note that screens can cost as much or more than your projector budget so you should plan to make your own for less than $100 (See AVS forum's DIY screen section (first link). Either paint a wall with a very light grey paint or use "blackout cloth" (white, slightly stretchy curtain liner) on a wood frame).

In terms of models, have a look at the highly rated models at projector central (see link) and find one available in the UK. For a start have a look at the Optoma HD70 (3rd link).

You can do what you want within your stated budget ... but you will have to make a few compromises and therefore you need to educate yourself before making a buying decision. So read as much as you can on projectors (there's lots of useful info on Projector Central and projector reviews (last link)).

Projector is not an ideal for use in your bedroom. It requires a big room, and the lamps only last around 2,000 hours and can cost you $300 to replace. For a decent one it can cost you a minimum of $1,500. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on projectors. You can also buy the March issue, it list just about all the projector in the market. Beside that you also need a projector screen, a home theater system for the sound. You are better off buying a tv, say a 42" Plasma for around $600. Hope this will help you out.

What is the best mini projector on the market?

I just want to connect to my macbook and project movies. battery life, resolution and size of picture are key.

I currently like theDLP Pico projector, and the Dell M109S.

The Dell M109S is very good and has a 800x600 resolution and costs about $450 but cannot be powered by battery and does not fit in your pocket. The only DLP pico on the market right now is the Optoma which costs about $400 but has a resolution of 480x320. I think that the pest pocket projector right now is the Aiptek, it sells for $299 through amazon and has a built in video player and memory, it also has a native resolution of 640x480 and built in speakers. The projector the Aiptek uses is the 3M which is as bright as the Optoma pico.
