Should I start this business?

Nick

Hi, I'm 26, super polite and friendly by nature. I worked as a manager at a 5 screen Corporate owned movie theatre in a midwest town of 15,000 for 4 years. Very dedicated, loved my job. The current manager has let the theatre go (it was already old and in bad repair when I started there)... road sign falling apart, poster cases damaged, showtimes barely visible on poster cases (no times on roadsign), building interior in bad poor condition from ac/heat units to restrooms to wall paper to carpeting to screen cond. to sound to seats to etc. etc. Was 35mm but I heard they are getting a digital/3D projector or two from Corporate in the next few weeks. They were the last theatre to get converted. Last I saw the books (2012) theatre was making $90-100k profit a year. Rent (strip mall) was $10k a month, outrageous I know. Manager was payed 35-42k a year based on performace. 2 hourly managers payed 18-22k a year depending on performance. Nearest other AMC theatre (built in 1997) is an 8 screen 35 miles away in a town of 34,000 which has basic facilities and digital/3D projection. Around 13,000 addditional residents in rural communities within a 20 mile radius of the 5 screen theatre's community of 15000. I know thats not a lot of information, but based on this, should I attempt to get a loan, investors, financing, etc. and open a competing theatre in the town?? I have experience, excellent credit, familiar with customer base, I'm not tied down to my current job and would love to manage Full-Time to save on my own costs (I can live off 20-25k a year) and build capital, pay off loans and investors. SHOULD I GO FOR IT? Would you build or lease? How many screens? Arcade? Etc. etc. I did this on my Iphone so sorry It's not puncuated well. THANKS!

Answer
How long ago was last you saw the books? You need to have current info. You need to do a business plan before approaching anyone for financing. think about the movie theatre industry and how it is being affected by video purchase and rental and online movie viewing and whatever else that may come along. Think about ways you can change theatre movie viewing to keeep up with the changing times. I see movie theartre going by the wayside unless people start thinking outside the box and come up wiht ingenious new ideas to keep the people coming in.

Has anyone heard of contav all in one conference table?

I am looking for a conference room table where all components like for example data projector, connection cable, pc, media control and radio transmission technology are integrated in the table itself and wireless.

Answer
The contav 3000 is a fine model. It comes with wireless communication and power transmission via a built-in induction loop and optical link. A high pressure laminar flow of air provides an air cushion capable of floating your documents across the table without you having to move an inch. The wooden versions come in mahogany or pitch pine. The metallic (cheaper) version, is available in a variety of alloys. At night, all desks can be coated with a fluorescent dye that glows in the color of your choice.

The projector unit is very nice, but the whole desk reminds me of something out of the James Bond movie Dr. No.

Does any one know where I can find a conference room table?

Will an HID kit work on my Projector Headlights?

best projector headlight kit image

Alex G

I have a 2000 Civic with projector headlights ( angel eye, euro light, etc.) the original head light used an H4 type bulb, but the new headlights use an H1 bulb, I wanted to know if I were to buy an HID conversion kit for an H1 type bulb would it fit on my projector head lights?

Answer
With your projector's it should say whether you can or not have them in there. If you don't have the original box and instructions it came with, then call the place you got them from, I have some and mine have the ability to have them, whereas some of the ones I was looking at can't have them put in.

Does anyone know where i can find projector headlights for a 1999 Cadillac Deville?

Dorian Mil

I want to switch my old assembly and be able to put hids on it. But it says i have to have projector headlights

Answer
I don't know where you live but I am in Northern Cali and there is a power sport broker who has kits to change your car over for hids. Most places have stores like Contagious Motor Sport and that is who you would see here. Check around your neck of the woods for a Motor Sport specialty store and they will hook you up.

I am buying a new projector but I cant decide which one to get. I have looked at tons of them. I see a good one and then the next one I see its either better or worse. I want one with a GREAT picture, it has to be quiet, it has to be able to connect to my computer, it cant be more than 600 dollars, It has to be able to project a picture close up, and it has to be a nice projector. What would you recomend I get?

Answer
I hate to dissapoint you, but at $600 you have limited choice if your intent is games, HDTV or DVDs ... but you didn't specify.

Projectors fall into three resolution classes: 480p ($500+); 720p ($900+); and, 1080p ($1900+) ... all US prices. Unfortunately the bulk of under $7-800 projectors (and many more expensive) are aimed at business users.

They will work for home use, BUT generally have poor contrast ratio, relatively low resolution, poor video processing, and (often) noisy fans and poor colour accuracy.

Inexpensive projectors are usually DLP based models (rather than LCD), which means they have a spinning colour wheel which -- unless fairly fast (>4X) -- will cause "rainbow effect" (headaches/visual field issues) in susceptible viewers (a small but not insignificant portion of the population). DLP does give a better contrast ratio than LCD though.

You can read more at the projectorcentral.com site you were directed to by another respondent, but the bottom line is at that price range -- unless you want a projector for business presentation type use -- you would be advised to look for an end-of-line, refurbished or used Home Theatre projector.

For example, I came across an ad for a BenQ 8700+ projector for $800 the other day. New, that projector cost over $5000 ... and it even came with a spare lamp. That raises the main issue with used projectors ... the lamps are $300+ so unless you know the lamp is in good shape you could be in for an expensive surprise not long after you buy.

Or, try the InFocus store ... they often have refurbished projectors at very reasonable prices.

I'm not going to suggest a specific projector, but (assuming you are after one for game and movie watching) look for the following characteristics:
- 1000-1500 ANSI Lumens
- fan noise: <28 dB
- VGA, composite, S-video, component (sometimes it's via an adapter to the VGA input) ... and if possible DVI or HDMI (HDCP compliant).
- 800x600 resolution (4:3) or 854x480 (16:9) or better

Read reviews and specs at projectorcentral.com or projectorreviews.com (See link). Projectorcentral.com has a handy calculator to help you determine how big the image will be at a specific distance (2nd link).

Finally, see the last link for a list of used projectors that may be of interest.

Hope this helps.

Has you ever used an overhead LCD panel projector? Did you ever try to play movies on it?

bjmarchini

I was thinking about getting a projector for the living room. I stumbled accross plans to build a projector using an overhead, an lcd panel projector and a casing to put it all in. Seems like most cost under $200.

I remember a professor using one of those panels in a class i had. I am wondering how movies look when played off of it.

Answer
Unfortunately regular overhead LCD panel projectors were not designed to handle/process video, much less movie DVD's very well. This type of projector will normally project static slides very well, however, when it comes to movies and videos you will be very disappointed in the actual outcome due to the projector not having any sort of deinterlacer to smooth out the screen door, pixelized noisey moving images. Even if you were to attach a separate DVD device with its internal deinterlacer, which is suppose to process the 480p, 720p or 1080p DVDs, you may be able to process the jaggies but the screen door images will still be noticeable. And then there is no heightened contrast level processing of the video images since most overhead LCD panel projectors by their initial design, have very low contrast levels, mostly between 600 to 1000:1. There is also the issue of fading of the LCD panels [especially the blue one] over time since most overhead LCD panels projectors have panels made of "organic" material that will fade over time. So, as a consequence, you will have to purchase another projector in the very near future.

Perhaps you should reconsider your choice of technology and look into acquiring a DLP projector which is the choice of many home theatre owners - due to their very high contrast levels usually starting at 2000:1 and moving upwards therefrom.

In conclusion, you will be greatly disappointed in the final video images projected by an overhead LCD panel projector. The image will be full of jaggies and will appear very gray and low in contrast.

Good luck!

Should I get a projector or tv for my home theater?

best projector daylight on A4 Tech Q3-320 Glass Run Mouse - Mice Input Devices - Megabyte PCs
best projector daylight image

the man

I'm building a home theater with surround sound and whatnot, I just need the main part now. I can't decide whether to buy a HD projector or TV. I've heard that the display qualities of the projectors are lower than that of TV's in general, but others say that it's just because the screen is so large. I want to be able to mount the screen in front of a TV so I can watch the news without feeling like I need to get popcorn, so is there a way to mount it from a stand or something? I've also heard that the bulbs need replacing every few years for like 400 bucks...

The main question though, is quality. Compared to, say, and LED set, does a projector's color and 1080p look as good? Or better?

And which company/price range/model should I stick to?
Thanks @Alex, I have the couch about 15 feet away, and there is a window in the room but I'm probably going to be watching movies at night anyways. I'm mounting the screen in front of the TV so I can retract it when I want to watch other things, thanks a lot!

Answer
The answer does depend on factors like the layout of your room.

Will you be viewing from over 12 feet away?
Can you keep out all external light even during daylight hours?
If the answer to both of these is yes, then a projector may be right for you.

I want the best picture quality I can afford.
I can put furnature wherever gives me the best viewing position.
The answer is probably a TV.

To get a cinematic experience from a TV, you need a very big TV and to sit very close to it.
I've got a 60" plasma and a viewing distance of about 8 feet.
If I view it from 18 feet, you can't tell the difference between HD and SD.
From 8 foot, SD looks rubbish. 1080p looks fantastic though.
From 12 feet both SD and HD are watchable, but it's not as cinematic.

I've painted the wall behind the TV black, so when the lights are out there's no light wash from the wall behind, the picture just floats.

Some projectors are very poor, even the HD ones. You get what you pay for. By the time the bulb goes once or twice you'll probably be considering buying your next upgrade anyway, so don't worry too much about that, just factor it in to the purchase cost decision.

Some 50 inch TVs are very good for a sensible price, but make sure to do your research because there are still a few howlers out there, not all of them the cheapest ones.

How Many lumens do I need to get in my projector to be able to watch with daylight?

lamboghini

I am looking for a projector to watch TV, and play video games on in HD. I have found good projectors in the $600-$800 range but I go back and forth on contrast ration and brightness. Any reccomendations as well would be great

Answer
The key to using ANY projector is to have as little light on the screen surface as possible. Projectors work best in a darkened room (think about how dark it is in a movie theater).

Most projectors in your price range will not display full HD very well, but some in that range will probably look pretty good in a darkened room.

It needs to be connected to my computer, because I have a really tiny t.v. and no dvd player. I wanted a projector to play movies onto my walls, but Im looking online and the only ones I can find are either toys, or fancy conference room and home theatre projectors that cost around $1,000! I'm really trying to find one that's under $100, but I could go higher.

Answer
Best place is probably Ebay. Sometimes electronics stores have the cheap LCD or LED bulb types such as Torpedo (Check with Best Buy, Kohls, Walmart, and Target). Some are real cheap and cheezy but the Torpedo was reviewed as being the best of the low end. The only problem is that most of these will not allow you to directly connecting to a computer. Those are pricey, but you may be able to find an RGB (RS232) monitor connection cable that converts to an Analog AV signal. I have seen those on ebay as well. Good Luck

What is the best projector for projecting video in a medium-sized music venue (500-800 cap)?

Bryan

I am looking for a portable projector to display video in medium sized venues, as a backdrop for a band performing. I would guess the projection would be somewhere between 10-15 ft wide

I have done some research, but I still don't have a good answer. I am definitely looking for the best value. Not really looking for anything over $1,000. Thanks!

Answer
If you only have $1000 to spend just get any name brand projector around that price. Normally you would spend a lot more on a projector for a event with 500 to 800 people (maybe $5K minimum). Keep in mind that you will maximize the effectiveness of the projected image if you have as little ambient light as possible on the screen surface. If you can do that, even a $1000 projector will look pretty good. The more ambient light, the worse the projector will look. Consider how much ambient light is on the screen at a movie theater - almost none.

Blu ray or a upscaling player? Is blu ray disc player worth it to buy?

best 720p projector for the money on Home Theater Projector Review: Optoma HD65 DLP, 720p Projector ...
best 720p projector for the money image

elle

I just bought a LCD 1080i. I"m debating on just buying upscaling or blu ray disc player. Can Blu ray play regular DVDs and play on 1080i format? Or should I just save money and by a upscaling player that plays regular DVDs. How is the output on the upscaling player?

Answer
Not an easy question to answer.

First, you will have to decide based on YOUR priorities ... but let me offer some things to consider.

- Blu-ray is, and will likely remain, a niche premium format for people who can benefit and are willing to pay the premium price (~$300+ for the player and $5-$20 more for disks of the same movie vs DVD).

- Opinion of Blu-ray can vary from "wow!" to "what's all the fuss about" ... depending on how it is being displayed.

- To FULLY benefit you need a 40" or larger 1080p HDTV, with a good surround sound system capable of handling the advanced audio formats.

- You will still get some benefit from Blu-ray with a 720p HDTV (what you have), but you don't mention screen size, where you intend to watch from and whether you have a good sound system ... all of which influence the benefit/cost equation.

- Many Blu-ray films are poorly mastered and don't look much better than DVD even under optimum conditions.

- An upconverting DVD player won't make a DVD look as good as a Blu-ray disk, but on a 720p HDTV under about 40" detail will look fairly close. But picture quality is subjective -- and dependent on more than just resolution -- so you really have to see it for yourself and decide if Blu-Ray is worthwhile. Why not view a DVD and a Blu-ray disk on a HDTV similar to yours and see for yourself?

Personally I can say that I have a 720p projector and a 110" screen, and I tried HD DVD disks (which give essentially identical picture and audio quality to Blu-ray) and found insignificant improvement over upscaled DVDs. Since then I have bought 2 HD DVD tiltes (Planet eart and Sunrise Earth) and over 50 DVDs. I use my HD DVD player as an upscaling DVD player ... and pay about $20 less for movies than if I bought Blu-ray. So I guess I'm biased ... but upconverted DVD look just fine with me.

I should caution that not everyone sees the same thing (which is why I recommended seeing for yourself).

If you do consider an upconverting players note they are only as good as the video processing chip they use ... so avoid the under $60 models. The best are Oppo's models but they are a bit pricy.

BTW, if you do decide an upconverting DVD player is enough the liquidation prices (~$75) in effect on the Toshiba HD-A3 or Venture HD-7000 (Wal-Mart's brand) HD DVD player make them a very attractive option (and as a bonus you can play any of the 400 HD DVD movies available (Noting there will be very few new ones after this month)). But you will have to move fairly fast .. a lot of people have realized the same thing and they are getting snapped up fast.

Finally, if you decide on Blu-ray, other than the PS3, you should wait until near the end of the year to get a Profile 2.0 (BD-Live!) player, and for prices to come down a bit.

Hope that helps.

Is it worth spending the money to buy a blu-ray disc player, or is there really not much difference?

lahlahdips

For those who have them, let me know if it's been worth the investment or if I'd be better off waiting another year or two for the prices to drop.

Answer
I don't have a Blu-ray player but do have an HD DVD player ... which -- according to most experts -- gives virtually identical video and audio performance to Blu-ray.

I use a 720p HD projector, a 110" screen and a good 7.2 audio system for movies and HDTV. I tried HD movies and did careful comparisons and found very little difference between HD DVD and upconverted DVDs and, even before HD DVD died I decided not to buy HD DVD disks since DVDs were plenty good enough and far cheaper.

I might see more difference if I had a 1080p projector .... and someday may upgrade ... but with my current setup I'm in no hurry to buy into Blu-ray because the price premium on disks (~$10 vs the same movie on DVD) just isn't worth it.

Everything I read says Blu-ray CAN be great, but often is only a little better than DVD. Furthermore all too many movies are either not available on Blu-ray or don't really justify HD treatment (who needs an HD version of "Jackass" or "Van Wilder", or even "home movie" films like "Cloverfield" or "28 Days"?).

My conclusion is that Blu-ray is in trouble. It's evolutionary, not revolutionary. It isn't going away ... but isn't a sure thing to replace DVD as the mainstream format. Rather, it will continue to coexist with DVD as a premium priced HD alternative.

While prices will come down in the next year or so, Blu-ray will always be more expensive than DVD (more difficult and expensive to master, higher production costs, higher licensing fees).

The judgement as to how much extra it is worth to get Blu-ray quality is a personal one, but at the moment I would recommend anyone other than an "early adopter" (those who must have new technology no matter what the cost) with a 40"+ screen 1080p display and a GOOD audio system stay with DVD until prices come down significantly. The benefits of Blu-ray just are not that compelling for most consumers ... and certainly not at current prices.

What do I need to split projector screens with video camera and computer?

We have projector screens at our church. We can show the computer and the camera feeds seperately but we do not know how to show the camera feed and computer feed at the same time. We have seen at other churches where they show the preacher on the screens and the Bible verse will be at the bottom of the screen. Do we need a special cord?? Any answers would be appreciated.

Answer
What you can do is connect the camera to the computer, find a program that will allow you to actively insert subtitles, and then connect the computer to the projector.
So think of it like the video feed comes from the camera, filters through the computer, and then goes to the projector.

How big of a screen would a typical projector make at 15 feet away

Answer
Most projectors have zoom capability meaning you can adjust the image size. You need to look at this specification on any projector you are considering and determine if it will work for your intended screen size and throw distance. Also you need to consider the projector brightness and screen gain requirements. A good resource for making these determinations can be found here... http://www.projectorcentral.com/JVC-DLA-RS25U-projection-calculator-pro.htm Just select the projector you are considering and then use the calculator to determine if it will work.

I want to buy a projector? How do I know which one is better?

Mutual Hel

When one buys a computer, one looks for the computer's hard drive, RAM, CPU, and so on.

What about when it's a projector? What should I look for? LCD or DLP?

Answer
Projectors range from $600 to $250000 in the consumer arena. It's hard to figure from your question, but here's a couple ideas. Most theater projectors range from $5000 to $40000.

The battle for best display is being fought between 3 chip LCoS and 3 chip DLP. If you have limited lighting control in your room, the DLP is a better choice. You will need the extra driving force of the DLP to overcome the ambient light. If you have good control over light, the LCoS (similar to LCD only much better) will deliver the smoothest, most realistic picture. 3 chip LCoS is actually cheaper than 3 chip DLP which makes it an even nicer choice. Look at JVC.

Single chip DLP has a high speed motorized color wheel inside. Any time you add electromechanical devices to electronics, you diminish reliability.

Other things to look at:

Contrast ratio
We can't distinguish light to dark beyond 2000:1 at any given moment, but over time our eyes can adjust as high as 20000:1. So, a near black screen that immediately goes 20000 times brighter at once will "clip" our sensors in our eyes, but we will eventually adjust to it.

Brightness, measured in ANSI lumens, lux or candellas per sq. meter. Higher is generally better.

Throw distance is important to figure screen size and location

Bulb replacement cost

Loudness of the cooling fan

Formats: 2.35:1 is a nice addition to the standard 16:9 since most large production films are shot in it. Also, film is 24 frames per second instead of video's 30 fps. (or it's multiples.) It's good if the projector can switch back and forth.

Resolution: 1080x1920 native is the standard now.

Calibration: The better projectors can be set to D65, or 6504 kelvin for white. This is important for accurate display. There are minor variations on this theme. Check with a calibrator you trust.

If you're looking at projectors under $5k, you won't find most of what I'm recommending so keep an eye on the contrast and brightness, and the practical issues mentioned above.

Don't forget the popcorn machine!

where in the UK (london) can i get this sort of stuff for a reasonable price? thank you!

Answer
NEWEGG.com and mail order it in, just make sure it is compatible with UK electrical requirements (voltage).
NEWEGG.com has the best prices and has feedback from buyers that can tell you if the Make, Model, & Merchant are reliable.
If you can not mail order, at least use their prices and quality ratings as a guideline to see what local merchants have, and help keep prices in line.
In the US >Best Buy, and Circuit City are pretty much the places to go for price/quality, but more esoteric brands are available from fewer and more exclusive dealers (ie: more expensive). Not sure about UK, sorry!
A web search should help you find dealers in your area that you can inquire with about the various brands and products.
Surely London has a High-End Home Theatre store, that is where I'd start to learn more, you do not have to buy it there, just jearn about the products available.

Answer
It's easier on everyone's eyes to have a dark background with light text. Be sure to do a trial run sometime before hand to make sure that you can see everything correctly. Talk to your instructor about it. See if you can stop by and hook it up just to make sure. (I'm speaking through personal experience with a presentation that got a bad grade because it couldn't be seen when I thought it could be.) You want to make sure everything is readable and not hard on your eyes. ^_^ If it's not hard on your eyes, it shouldn't be on anyone else's either. Remember, it's going to look different on a projector screen than it will on your small computer screen. ^_^

Can anybody recommend a cost-effective 4 screen Video Wall?

We are looking for a four screen video wall solution for our conference room. We are looking for simplicity, high resolutions and an easy install. We also would like to use multiple sources.

Any help would be highly appreciated !

Answer
iVu4 ... no doubt about it.

Check out http://www.emsdigital.co.uk

The iVu4 Stand Alone Video Controller is smaller than a laptop, has 1 DVI in and 4 DVI out. Quite seriously "Plug n Play" and supports output resolutions up to 1920 x 1080.

We four of them last month. We have been driving them with DVD players, projectors, laptops, computers ... and as far as cost goes, I believe they cost around £699 per unit.

We searched long and hard, you won't find anything even remotely as good and cost-effective.

Do I have to buy a high end projector and screen to display my video games?

ramen_and_

Hello ^_^

I am currently looking into purchasing a projector and projector screen to display video games on a larger surface.

After checking out what's on the market I noticed there are inexpensive business projectors and much more expensive home theater projectors.

I'm just wondering if I can get a satisfactory image from inexpensive business projectors, or if I need to purchase a home theater projector to get a satisfactory image out of my video games.

also... does the projector screen i purchase really matter?

Answer
Business projectors are usually intended to display fixed images like powerpoint presentations. Home Theater projectors are for displaying motion and video. If you want High Def for say an X-Box 360 or Playstation 3 then your prices for a good projector will start at around a 1000 bucks and go up from there. Also consider long term costs of bulb replacement, bulb life on projectors averages only 2000 hours of use.
As for screens, just like projectors you get what you pay for.

How can i project pictures of my reception during the reception?

jenniferj4

I've heard of people taking pictures during their wedding/reception and using a projector to display the pictures for the guests to enjoy. I don't know anything about projectors, but this sounds like a neat idea. Does anyone know anything about this? Can you just plug in a camera to a projector? Or do you have to buy slides? I'm clueless here, so any info will point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Answer
You wouldn't want to tie up your camera to the projector, because then you can't use the camera for more photos.
However, you could hook up a laptop to the projector, and have a few memory cards to cycle through.
That way, you could download images from the first card to the laptop, while filling the next card.

Biggest problem might be the projector. They vary HUGELY in quality and the good ones are VERY expensive.
Cheaper ones are nowhere near as clear, and really only work if the room is quite dark. Even cheap ones look pretty good when they are very close to screen and the projected image is small, so don't let the displays in stores fool you - they are set up to look good at that small size, but wouldn't work for what YOU want.

It would be best if you could rent a top quality one for the day.

P.S. I wouldn't just show photos of the reception - everyone is there and seeing it live, anyway. I'd make a slideshow of the bride and groom as kids, on vacation, with their families, the friends, etc.

I want to buy some blue HID projector headlights for it but I don't know where to.

Answer
http://www.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?products_id=254Probably one of the better kits out there that isn't very hard to install and good support form the site and their forum. Another good place is http://www.lightwerkz.net/ but you will have to send your lights in and they are pretty pricey. Also know that the bluer the light, the lower the actual distance the light travels so while the ricey look is so popular, it's also a downgrade.

Please guide me with respect to DLP vs LCD, contrast ratio, brand, resolution, performance to decide what projector to buy.

Answer
LCD Projectors: Strengths
* Richer color dynamics for better results in rooms with ample ambient light
* Draw less power
* Throw less heat
* No color filter wheel = No "rainbow effect"
* Slightly quieter Seemingly sharper image on data

DLP Projectors: Strengths
* Smoother video
* Smaller box
* Pixels far less visible, (although normally not an issue for business use)
* More âfilmlikeâ on DVD and HDTV
* Generate "blacker" blacks
* Higher contrast

LCD Projectors: Disadvantages
* More visible pixels
* Some screen door effect on certain video images
* Physically larger - Even for the same number of lumens
* Poorer contrast
* Blacks come out lighter gray than DLP prrojectors

DLP Projectors: Disadvantages
* Rainbow effect bothers some
* More moving parts (color filter wheel)
* Color filter wheel often produces soft but audible whine
* Poorer reds and yellows at full power
* Color saturation
* Need more lumens than LCD, for rich colors, when dealing with ambient light

which one is best?...you can compare both above yourself and ask yourself what criteria you can't accept then you got the best one. do like check sheet to compare.

Can I enclose a DLP projector with screening to prevent dust buildup?

Q. I read bad reviews on the projector I bought about dust buildup. Would this help?

Answer
You would have to clean the screening on a regular basis. The fan in the projector draws in cooling air, and the screen will clog with it. If you don't keep it clean, the projector will overheat, leading to shutdown or failure. Projectors have a built-in filter, so I don't see any advantage to a screened enclosure.

What cable should I use to get the best picture with my projector?

Would it be better to use a component cable (red, blue, green) or a VGA cable? My projector is 720P if that makes a difference.

Answer
I recommend either using a Component Video Cable (Green, Blue, Red). This cable can support up to 1080p, the highest High Definition resolution available. It would be the best choice for your 720p projector. The VGA cable won't support high definition, and it is recommended for computers.

Does it matter if I get a projector with a 720p native resolution versus one with a 1080p native resolution?

Michael

I want a 1080p picture, but I'm wondering about the "supports up to" part of the projector's description on a 720 projector.

In other words, if I can spend $1500 over $2500, and still have a great picture, I'll do it.

Answer
Unlike small display HDTVs -- where there may be no discernable difference between a 720p and 1080p display (e.g. at viewing distances of 8-10 ft) -- with a projector and larger screen the average viewer WILL be able to see the difference between 720p and 1080p images.

The article at the link has the details but basically the argument is as follows:

- For a 100" screen size the recommended viewing distance (per THX guidelines) is between about 11.5 ft and 13.7 ft.

- For a 100" screen for a viewer with normal eyesight there will be no visible difference between 1080p and 720p images at distances over about 19 ft, but as viewing distance decreases, the increased detail of a 1080p image will be become increasingly evident, with detail being fully resolved at about 13 ft.

In other words, at optimum viewing distance a 1080p projector is the minimum resolution recommended to fully benefit from 1080p program material.

This means if you plan to watch from greater than optimum viewing distance and/or to watch HDTV (a mix of 720p and 1080i) you can probably get away with a 720p projector, but if you plan to watch Blu-ray or HD DVD disks you would benefit from a 1080p projector.

Will the image from a 720p projector be "a great picture"? Difficult to answer. I have a 720p projector and good HDTV programming looks pretty darn good. But I don't see much benefit from HD DVDs over normal (upconverted) DVDs, so I suspect I'm being limited by my projector and a 1080p model would be better still. But recognizing that I will only see significant improvement from a percentage of program material (basically, above average HD disks), and most material (HDTV, DVDs) will not look any different I am not in a hurry to upgrade.

Whether the extra price for a 1080p model is acceptable to you is another question ... and one only you can answer, but with cost differentials for 1080p vs 720p dropping below $1000 (The Mitsubishi 4900 is currently available for $1900 US with rebate) I know if I were buying today I would opt for 1080p.

How can I get a projector light bulb to run off batteries?

Kaj

I have a 10V, 80W projector light bulb new out of the box that I would like to run by itself, on batteries instead of through a projector. I tried wiring it to a 9V and 1.5V battery in series, including running the positive lead both directions, but didn't have any luck. Do you know why? Here's a picture of the light bulb and box; http://i.imgur.com/LdVnb.jpg

Answer
80 watts is a lot of load.U have not mentioned what type of battery uu connected.
Even if the connection is right it will not last more time.
U need large battery like car battery with more ampere hours rating.
Small dry cell will not give 80watts of power.
also u have to take 2 leads, one from positive and other from negative terminals.

Projector lights blinking on a Sony projector Tv?

Swamp Dawg

My Projector TV's screen started blinking the screen on and off a while back. When we opened up the back, the three projector lights that shine onto the screen were blinking on and off. the sound was still there, just no picture. What can I do? I had to move my Bedroom TV into the living room because we couldnt get enough time between blinks to read the guide or see what was going on in whatever we were watching. it'd stop blinking for every once in a while and go a few hours witout blinking but it got to where it wouldnt stop. what is the problem and how can I address it?

Answer
Did some digging and found this. hope it helps!

Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.
