Video projector or tv?

Jason

Ok here it is im debating on whether to get a projector that will be used as a tv, or a lcd tv. I am willing to spend around $500. Also, with the projector is there a need to buy speakers? After your choice if you can will you make a suggestion of the tv or projector? THX

Answer
I own a projector and these are the facts. If you are buying new do not get a projector because 500 dollars is not enough and you will not be happy. Also keep in mind that the room has to be somewhat dark to see the image. All projectors use a bulb that lasts around 3000 hours and then it needs to be replaced. Mine went out yesterday and will cost 465 dollars to replace.
Projectors only show an image. You usually have to have a digital box from your tv provider to make a connection and will have to have some sort of Stereo system for sound. In order to get a quality projector you need to visit higher end store like ultimate electronics or get one used on Ebay or Craigslist. Take some time and visit the different stores by you. If the store doesn't have it on display for you to see the picture than chances its not what you are looking for.

Replace bulb on rear projector HDTV or buy new TV?

Nitesh

I'm trying to decide if I should replace the bulb in my 2006 rear projection HDTV, or just get a new LCD or plasma. The bulb will probably cost me 150-200. It's a Sony KF-50WE620 set, a 50" 720p/1080i tv. The performance was decent, my main gripe was it's lack of ports, it had no HDMI ports, just one DVI and a bunch of component.

The bulb would be much cheaper than a new TV even with their falling prices of course, but then with something this old I don't know if something else will fail early, or how long the replacement bulb will last. If anything beyond the bulb goes it's almost certainly not worth replacing.

Thoughts? And if I do get a new set, what are the best affordable ones in about the same size? I take it LCDs and Plasmas have somewhat converged in performance?
Ehh, not to sure about projectors due to the location (too much light), plus even the best home projectors can't match the quality of actual TVs.

Answer
I wouldn't get a new bulb. The age of your tv points to it's starting to fail in other areas as well. So try selling it as is on craigslist.

Then I'd go with an LED by Samsung. There are cheaper makes out there, but for a really good quality picture and good tv, go with Samsung.
