I'm trying to get a super 8mm camera to shoot some film, and the only film I can get my hands on are the blank reels, but the only cameras I can find work with cartridges. How do these work? I've never seen them before. Is there a reel inside the cartridge? How do you record on the cartridge, but play on an old projector?

OK. This is how Super 8 works. You put a cartridge (not a reel) in the Cine camera (it just plugs in), then you shoot the film as normal. Then you send the cartridge off for developing - then they send it back to you on a reel so you can use it on your projector.
Super 8 cameras only take cartridges. The film only lasts for 3 minutes 20 seconds - then you have to put in a new cartridge.
Kodak who invented the system, still sell super 8 cartridges.

Will Super 8mm film play on a pre-Super 8 projector?

I recently acquired an Ampro Futurist 8, an 8mm film projector, and I was wondering if it could also play Super 8 film, or if I need an adapter or anything of that sort.

No you cannot play super 8 film in a normal 8mm projector as the image size, sprocket size and spacing are all different.
