I need help deciding which one to get. I am wondering if the 1080p is going to make that much of a difference over 720p. Also the hd20 has 1800 lumens compared to 2500 on the gt270
I will be using the projector for mostly gaming and movies sitting about 8 feet away from the wall.

Projectors are the one display device where higher resolution is (almost) always beneficial. It's because at normal seating distance the large screen allows the lower resolution pixels to be visible to some degree while less so at higher resolution. See the 1st link for discussion.
That said, it isn't a slam dunk that 1080p will benefit you. If you are projecting Blu-ray movies and sit at optimum distance for the screen size (2nd link) you are using and you have normal (or better) eyesight you will benefit. If watching DVDs and the player or the projector don't scale the lower resolution material well, or you have less than good vision or sit too far from the screen you may get little or no benefit.
As to brightness, if projecting in a dim/dark room more brightness is not beneficial ... and on a moderate size screen may actually be too bright.
As to which is better the HD20 or GT270 ... they are intended for different purposes and you don't state yours. A projector is much more than resolution and brightness ... you have to consider many other factors including contrast, weight, lens specs, whether you need lens offset, inputs, size/weight, noise level, warranty and price.
I can't tell you which YOU NEED so I susgest you read the reviews at the 3rd and 4th link carefully and decide which fits your needs better.

flickering white vertical line in optoma dlp projector?
jose lito
there is an appearing flickering white vertical line in my optoma lcd projector. how can i fix it?
Answer
If it is still under warranty then report it to optoma.com and send it back for repair. I believe optoma responds quickly to such problems. If it occurs again, demand for a replacement, If the warranty is already expired and think that you can manage maybe a tip form "shyamprocom" might help.
it needs a good service .all that needs to be done is open the top cover, the main board , clean all the dust possible.there is a glass dlp , clean it with a soft cloth ( like the one used to clean specks).on refiiting the main board make sure to firmly press the 100 pin black connector on the dlp board engine.this is the cause of the vertical flashy line
once repacked start the unit.it should work fine!!!!
