I currently own an iPad and a Mac. I'm contemplating buying Keynote for both. I'm certain that switching presentations between my iPad and Mac will be flawless and easy but my university, which I will need to make power points for, only has PCs hooked up to projectors. My question is, if I export a Keynote presentation (or whatever it's called) to powerpoint, can I expect formatting to be consistent? Is this feasible? I know from past experiences with OpenOffice that exporting to PowerPoint was always a pain in the ass cause the formatting was always messed up and the transitions didn't cross over. Should I expect the same from Keynote cause if that's the case, I won't get it. I'm wondering if there's a read-only format I can export to that will work just as fine on a PC as a Mac. Is there one? The most thoughtful answer (which answers BOTH of my questions) gets 10 pts.

You can expect formatting issues immediately. Only Microsoft products come with the default fonts used in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, so all other applications have to substitute fonts. Therefore, things will always look different unless you're careful to specify cross-platform fonts.
The open file format for presentations was set by an international standards body more than 8 years ago, but each program offers various levels of support. Microsoft fully supports open formats. Keynote can open files saved in standard format but can not save in standard format.
Just the same, you'll need Keynote for your iPad because there's no Microsoft PowerPoint for iPad (Sept 2011). So you're kinda stuck with Keynote as the intermediary. Make your presentations in Keynote so they play on your Mac and iPad. Export them to PowerPoint 97 format from Keynote for the rest of the world. To take advantage of PowerPoint's features, these exported files can be saved in PowerPoint format in PowerPoint before sharing with everyone.

ok so can you have a key note presentation on your mac and have that hooked up to the projector and then have you iPod/ipad que the next slides? i saw a person do something like this and i was wondering if that was through keynote
