Front projectors are the best way to get a home theater experience that approximates a commercial movie theater --- and in some ways better, since there are no noisy neighbours, no sticky floors, much cheaper snacks and no long drive.
Picture quality, like with everything else is determined by what you buy, but an 8'-10' 1080p image with better than 25,000:1 contrast ratio is achievable on projectors costing less than $5000 (you can get a 1080p projector for under $2000).

I am planning on using the projector for TV and xbox 360 with 1080p hdmi.

Well sure if you just want a projector that works. If you want better quality for Home Theater applications I suggest looking elsewhere. Try visiting videogon.com. Most things there will probably be out of your price range, but you'll find a good projector for cheap soon. Best of luck to you. I just recently purchased a Samsung SP a800b. Its suburb.
