Business use projector - which one do i get?

I need to purchase a replacement projector for one of our conference rooms. The current one is ok, but the colours seem washed out/faded - especially the blues, even with a new bulb fitted.

So I figrue I need to get a better spec projector. The throw is about 5 meters to a 100" screen.

What attributes do i need to concentrate on to get the best colours in my projected image? What make/model do you reccomend for GREAT colours and brightness for a business use? Budget is not an issue.

Well you must have some budget. You can spend tens of thousand of dollars, depending on how much resolution and brightness you want.

Tossing up between the Dell 1209s and the Benq MP620 but not sure which would be the best. Does the Dell allow switching between 4:3 native and 16:9 modes. Anyone have any info or reviews of the above, what would you buy. Mainly to be used for home theater/tv viewing in medium sized room.

First, you don't want a "data projector", you want one designed for video.

Projectors fall into several broad classes (based on use). In general for the use you specify you want a projector designed for home theatre use ... not business (like the Dell and Benq).

The differences can be subtle, but basically HT projectors put more emphasis on colour accuracy and video processing. In addition the fan noise level is usually lower. There is less emphasis on brightness (since it will be assumed the projector will be used in a light controlled room).

That all said, most projectors can be switched between 16:9 and 4:3. The difference is really in whether the NATIVE resolution is 4:3 or 16:9 (or similar). If 4:3, widescreen images use a subset of the available vertical resolution, while a 16:9 projector will use a higher proportion of the vertical resolution for widescreen images (in the case of a 16:9 image, 100%).

Either the Dell or the Benq will work for HT use, but neither are really designed for that.

See the 1st link for an overview of recommended projectors (a bit dated, but still valid) at various price points. The second link is to another projector review site, and an article on the best HT projectors (probably all too expensive for you .. but there's lot's of other info on this site too).

You would be advised to do some reading and think about your needs/preferences/budget ... then identify some candidates.

A projector is a great idea (I watch HDTV and movies on mine and wouldn't go back to a "normal" TV), but it requires some RESEARCH o find the best one for yours particular needs.

They are quite different. The Toshiba is a (relatively) high brightness business projector, while the Optoma is a portable 'all in one' home theatre projector. Also the Optoma is less expensive. See the links for info and, in the case of the Optoma, a fairly positive review.

It really depends what you want the projector for. While the higher power of the Toshiba will make it useable in a room with some lights on, and the higher native resolution might give a bit sharper picture than the Optoma, as a business projector the fan noise level, colour correction and scaling may be less suitable for HT use than the Optoma.

The contrast ratio on the Optoma is better, but anything more than 2000:1 is fine as long as the room is reasonably dark.

In the price range you appear to be considering there are many other choices, so unless you have a particular reason to choose one of these two I'd suggest looking at the popular model listings (and then the reviews) for your intended use on Projector Central (upper left of the page) before deciding.

Sorry to not simply choose for you ... but your needs and preferences must guide the decision, along with factors beyond just CR, brightness and resolution (e.g. connections, zoom, lens shift, fan noise, DLP colour wheel speed, ....)

hi i was looing to buy a projector for my room but have no idea which one to buy or where to buy from (most likely ebay). i have a budget of £300 for the projector. and £100 for the screen. any recommendations thanks

A projector and screen is a great idea (I wouldn't go back to a 'small" screen (i.e. anything under 80-90") for anything). That said, everyone has somewhat different preferences / needs re a projector / screen so I'm not going to recommend a specific brand/model.

I suggest doing some reading at the two sites I've provided links for. While you can certainly get a projector within your budget range, you must decide between a new or refurbished or used model. The advantage of new is you get a warranty, but he disadvantage is you won't get as high quality. Consider though that a used projector may not have much time left on the lamp ... and replacements can cost $300-$400! That said, lamps cost more or less the same for budget and more expensive projectors, so there is an advantage to looking for a higher end used model than buying an inexpensive new/refurbished model.

At your budget point you should look for the highers resolution and highest contrast ratio projector you can find. Generally, you will find DLP based models offer more for the $$ than LCD models. Be aware that projectors designed for business use (most of the lower cost models) are usually not optimized for Home Theatre (HT) use (contrast is likely to be poor, fans can be noisy and video processing may be poor). A true HT design is preferable.

As to screens, I highly recommend building your own fixed screen (I've built two, each costing less than $100, and have been very satisfied), either using paint (Goo systems products are good, but you can do your own cheaper), melamine sheeting or blackout cloth. How do I know that the name of my business is a one off?

I mean you cant have the same name of a business thats already established? right? So is there a way of finding out? and do I have to go to Company House to register or is there anywhere else?

Here are some things to consider when choosing your name:-

Are you starting the business, with the intention of selling the business down the track? It may be easier to sell a generically named business, than one with your own personal name.

You have told us what your business intends to do, in its first year, but from my experience dealing with businesses, what they start doing and what they end up doing may be totally different things, because the opportunity presents itself. Don't limit your business by your business name.

If you have a passion or an inspiration from somewhere else use it. Explaining why you choose your name can attract people to your business, and your enthusiasm. DR Evils cat, Fluffy chinchillaâs, Tabby Cat, Nine Lives, Purrrrfect are all great names for someone who likes cats.

Make sure that it is easy to spell, and pronounce. If someone hears it on the radio, can they google the name, and find you?

In fact if you do choose a name ~ Google it ~ What comes up, is it already in existence somewhere in the world. If you Google my businesses name the only other entry that comes up is a single entry in the Netherlands.

What are your competitors called? Make a list of all of your competitorsâ¦do you want to sound like them or do you want to be distinguished from them?

Here in Australia a company has started called VIRGIN STAR http://www.virginstar.com.au/ ~they are an internet & IT service provider. They have gained a huge amount of exposure, because they have used both the name Virgin, from the Richard Branson empire, and Star, we have a fleet of planes here called Jet Star. The simple choice of their name has gained them a huge amount of exposure.

Another story ~ a client of mine ran a well known business in a county of England. A similar sounding business started up in the next suburb. There business wee not similar the new business sold training infrastructure such as projectors. My clients business used to receive cheques (b.t.w. correct spelling here in ozï), in his companies name, that were probably intended for the other company. Well of course he would give the money backâ¦but he also received orders that were intended for the other company, purchase orders would come through on his fax machineâ¦he would source the equipment, and sell it to them making a tidy & easy profit.

Business projectors have lower resolutions and not as good picture quality as home theater versions. They also lack a good scaler chipset, and also don't have the latest HD connections. You can play movies, but the picture quality will be pretty bad and you will be limited to s-video connections.

if your gonna spend the money anyway, you can buy some decent priced projectors that allow HDMI connections and are HD capable at Frys.com for around 500.00
