Connecting projector to HDMI DVD player?

Novice question - if I connect my projector to a HDMI DVD player using a HDMI cable, should I expect an improvement in quality or do I need it to feed off a HDTV?

A projector and an TV are two forms of display unit. One can substitute for another. That said, a reasonable quality upconverting DVD player will output a pseudo HD image that will look somewhat better than normal DVD ... but only on an HD display. So, IF your projector is an HD model (720p or 1080p) you can directly connect an upconverting DVD player via HDMI and get a 'better" image. BUT note you will have to connect a separate audio cable (e.g. optical or coaxial digital) to a receiver and speakers to get sound. BTW, you can also watch HDTV programming on a projector if you connect up to an HD cable box or satellite receiver.

Would I have everything I need? Or would I need some type of adapter or other cables before I can connect the two directly? I just want to watch movies, and I don't have a laptop, just a netbook for now.

It's difficult to say because the specific setup in terms of placement and type of audio system you plan to use are unknown.

At a minimum you need a video cable (DVD player to projector) and an audio cable (DVD player to audio system). I suspect you can get video with what you describe, but if you want the best quality you want to use the best common format ... i.e. component video (3 x RCA, red/green/blue coding). You also need them long enough (the DVD player and projector CAN be at the back of the room (bounce the remote signal off the screen), but it's often necessary to have a 10-20 ft (or more video cable for some setups). You will need some form of amplifier and speakers and the specific cable depends on the connection formats available. At the simplest a stereo RCA cable will work (and would also work for digital coaxial). Hope that helps.

If your DVD player and projector are compatible, sure. Connect your DVD video output to the video input on your projector, audio outputs to your amplifier. Are you playing a stereo amp? If so, connect your left/right outputs from the DVD to the amp, the amp to your speakers. When you set up the DVD player set it to PCM or 2 channel stereo settings, that way you won't loose the center channel track from the DVDs. Some older style DVD players don't have decoders, and so you need a digital processor to get sound, but most newer units don't need outboard decoders.

Check the projector to see what sort of inputs it has.

Most projectors will accept VGA, composite-video (standard A/V cable) and s-video (gives you a better picture than composite video.) Better projectors will also accept component video and even HDMI. Some better DVD players can also output VGA as well.

Check to see if the projector also has speakers - most of them don't. If your projector doesn't have speakers, you'll need to bring some along or use whatever is at the site. Computer speakers will work, but you will need to get a RCA-to-miniplug converter so you can make the connection. Radio Shack or other electronics stores sell these.

Can a Benq DS550 dlp projector hook up to a DVD player?

Q. I'm looking to purchase a projector to play DVD's and i'm not sure if this one will play them or not. I did find out that its compatable with video, but not component video, but I do not have a clue what this means. I am able to hook one up to a dvd player, ps2, or laptop.

The DS550 is an old projector (See link). You could watch DVDs via a laptop as long as you have a driver that will work at 1280x1024 or less. You MAY be able to connect a DVD player via a component to VGA adapter (many projectors accept this), and will be able to connect via composite (yellow RCA) ... although the picture quality won't be great.

The 450:1 contrast ratio is borderline for video (it will look somewhat washed out) .. but it will work.

Bottom line --- you can connect but you won't get a great picture. It would be preferable to find a better projector (one with a 16:9 aspect ratio, better contrast ratio and that accepts a digital HDTV input (DVI or HDMI)). Many other better options are available in the $600+ range.
