What home theater projector should I buy for under $500?

Ive got some space in a house for the home cinema/gaming area ive always wanted, in america though, where I havent got a clue about anything (I just arrived from england you see) so I was wondering what sort of home projector I can afford for around $400?

Ive seen a few on ebay for $300 that claim to be HD, but I read the specs and its only 640x480 pixels so thats clearly not HD is it.

Price is a key factor for me, I dont have alot, because ive set budgets for a couch/speaker system/etc.. for the cinema room so it really needs to be proper value for money, and no more than $500 but the cheaper the better.

What would you recommend and how should I set it up? I was planning on just getting some dark curtains to block out the sunlight, and fix the projector to the ceiling, then project it onto a large wall with no screen would this be appropiate?

Any other info would be much appreciated thanks for your time...

they will be able to answer any questions you would have. In my opinion I would be hesitant to buy a projector off of ebay, is this a new or used one. Remember most projectors bulbs have a life expectancy of around 2,000 hrs and most bulbs cost $200 to $400. Make sure to look at the Lums is it widescreen or not. Go to proectorpeople and they have a section where you can fill out what you are looking for and recomend projectors two you.

The ViewSonic PJD5123 Projector is an effective and economical solution for movie viewing and PowerPoint presentations. Projecting from 25' it creates a bright 8' wide image. I connect it to a laptop with Bose Companion 2 Series II computer speakers creating an exceptional audio video experience. I use a Logitech wireless mouse to control presentations. You may need a case for the projector and possibly a longer video cable than the 6' cable provided. I am completely satisfied with the quality and performance of the projector and would recommend it to anyone in the market.

Unfortunately in order to acquire an true HD 1080i DLP projector, there are only two selections available: the Optoma HD20 or the Infocus X-10. Both sell for around $1,000 - $1200. We have not found any HD projector in your price range of $400.
