what front projector screen size?

The distance from sitting area to screen will be 11-12 ft. What is the maximum screen size I should get? I am getting a 1080p front projector for blu-ray movies if that helps.


Answer
The maximum screen size as well as screen performance depends on several factors, which include:

     ⢠The interior dimensions of your viewing environment;
     ⢠The placement of the projector (governed in part by the lens shift function (if so equipped) and the throw distance. The latter is dependent on the focal length and the zoom ratio of the lens);
     ⢠The post optimization and/or calibration light output of the projector;
     ⢠The peak gain of the screen;
     ⢠The resolution of the projected image;
     ⢠The (corrected) visual acuity of the viewer(s);
     ⢠The ability to control the amount of ambient light in your viewing environment;
     ⢠The video and image processing performance of the projector or outboard video processor;
     ⢠The performance of the video source equipment;
     ⢠The source material;
     ⢠And last but not least your budget.

You will want to choose a quality projection screen that is optimized for HD video projectors, which has an aspect ratio of not less than 16:9 and a peak gain between 0.9 and 1.4. Keep in mind that the higher the screen gain the narrower the viewing angle (aka viewing cone) before you hit the half-gain point. This will be important if you expect to accommodate up to several people in the room at any given time. You should also give consideration to using a gray, high contrast screen if there will be any ambient light present during viewing. You will also want to use a black velour or velvet screen frame finish or masking, i.e. border, that absorbs over-scan, which helps to increase perceived contrast.

Realistically there are few consumer-oriented video projectors under roughly US$10,000 that will allow youâeven under the best of conditionsâto project a (16:9) HD video image larger than 120 inches diagonally while maintaining a sufficiently bright, reasonably uniform image that possesses good contrast and minimal color shift over a viewing angle of more than 50 to 60 degrees.

At a viewing distance of 11 to 12 feet, for one or more viewers possessing normal visual acuity viewing a 1920 Ã 1080p video image of good image quality, you will want to use a 16:9 (or even a 1.85:1) aspect ratio screen with a diagonal size of approximately 84 to 90 inches give or take no more than roughly 6 inches; providing your projector and room dimensions will accommodate a screen size in this range. (Note: using a native 1920 Ã 1080p âFull HDâ DLP or LCOS video projector will allow you to fudge a little toward the higher end of the screen-size range. If youâre using a Full HD 3LCD video projector you should limit yourself to a slightly smaller maximum screen size, e.g. no greater than 90 inches, especially if there will be any ambient light in the room.) projector question?

i want to get a projector but i can only put it 6-7 feet away from the wall. how big would the screen projection be: width*height if possible.

also if i do get it and i get a ceiling mount will i be able to point the picture down so it doesnt have to be in the middle of the room?

Hi there. Projectors with short throw lenses are available with minimum projection distances from 1.1 up to 2.3. 1-2 : 1 means the projector needs to be one to two meters back from the screen for a one metre image .2-3 : 1 means the projector needs to be 2 to 3 metres back from the screen to view a one metre image.Special lenses are available to attach to your projector lens to increase the image from the same distance. If you have the projector mounted on the ceiling make sure you get one with a "lens shift "feature. Which means you dont have to angle the projector down.The projector should be perpendicular to the screen to avoid a distorted image.The lens shift feature moves the image up or down while the projector is pointing straight ahead.

Projector recommendation?

Hi, I need some help in choosing a projector, there are so many to choose from!!!! I'd like it for watching TV and DVDs and for hooking up to my laptop for gaming. The room i have in mind is fairly small though, with a maximum throw of 2.5 metres.

I've been looking at the Optoma DVD100 and think it is quite good. My price range is anything up to £500. Thanks for the help!

Have a look at the Epson TW3000 its full 1080p, the dvd100 is 720p. The Epson also has a 2:1 lens ratio meaning it will double the screen size by distance. Meaning you will have a much larger image over the DVD100. THe Epson will also give you lens shift the optima does not have this. Lens shift will help you adjust you image left to right incase you can not get your projector mounted in a center aligment with your screen surface.

I'm a new projector user. I'm considering to buy either SONY VPL-VW50 (HK$36000/US$4615) or PANASONIC PT-AE1000 (HK$21000/US$2692). Any recommendation to me as first projector user?

I'm also considering to buy GRANDVIEW 100" electronic screen at HK$10,000/US$1282. Is it good choice? Where could I buy cheaper?

Distance between sofa and the screen is 13.5 feet. Do you think 100" screen is too large or good?

What do I need to be careful when selecting the projector and screen?

I'm also moving to a new flat and therefore I could decorate and install the projector and screen. What should I pay attention.

I'm living in HK. Any merchant in HK would you recommend (pls provide phone number if you have)?

Both your suggested models are good projectors, but each has advantages and disadvantages, and since choice often comes down to factors that are important to you I recommend reading the reviews at the first three links (and see comments at the fourth). They will also give you a good idea of issues to consider. For example, you have identified the distance to the screen, but you must also consider resolution, brightness, contrast ratio, whether lens shift is important to you (this will depend on how you plan to mount the projector (ceiling, shelf, table)), technology (DLP, LCD, LCOS), lens zoom ratio, fan noise, bulb lifetime, types and number of inputs, etc.

I highly recommend reading as much as you can, get opinions, but ... finally, make your own decision based on knowing what is important (and not important) to you. The four sites I have suggested will provide (almost) all the information you need to make a good choice. But also go and see projectors if possible.

As to size of screen, see the 5th link, but basically the screen when viewed from your preferred location should subtend an angle (left to right) of about 36-40 degrees. I am using a 110" screen (diagonal) and sit 12 feet from the screen, so 100" at 13.5 feet is certainly not too large.

As to the type of screen, again this is somewhat personal. You are considering an electric screen, but unless you need to be able to retract it a fixed screen would be cheaper. And it lends itself to building your own for a lot less $$. See the fourth link and the DIY screen forum for details ... but you can paint your own screen on the wall for $50 (US) that will rival a $1000 commercial screen.

Which Hi-Def projector has the best lens shift?

I want to buy a home cinema projector for my Xbox, but I don't want to go through the trouble of mounting it to the ceiling. I just want to place it on a table to the side of my sofa. Thanks in advance!

LCD projectors typically have the best lens shift (versus DLP models which didn't used to have the feature).

Panasonic PT-AX200U (720p) and Panasonic PT-AE2000U (1080p) are both good. Epson's Home Cinema UB is also good, but is new and costs more.

Good lens shift is about %50. So imagine the center of the image moving to about where one side was after it's moved over completely. Watch for one with both horizontal and vertical lens shift too.

For gaming, the Panasonic PT-AX200U is a good price and has a game mode too. Its the first projector to have a mode for gaming specifically. It's bright too, so you can use it with lights on.

how and where to pick a cheap projector?

i want a projector that its worth it but at the same time economic, i want it for a standard not so bright room, and I be using it as a home theater projector.
So what some considerations that i have to keep in mind, and where can i get these things?

Answer
Projectors are the best way to get a big image, but they are not for everyone.

The lowest price you are likely to find for a reasonable quality projector suitable for home theater use is about $500. You may find a used one or a end of line or refurbished one for a bit less, but realistically expect to pay $500+. The lamp alone usually costs $300 or more and must be replaced every 3000 hrs or so (so be careful with used projectors .. the lamp may be almost dead).

In terms of what to look for ... resolution (look for 720p or better e.g. 1024x768, 1280x720) and contrast ratio (i.e. at least 2000:1). Most inexpensive projectors will be lower resolution and have low contrast ratio (e.g. 4-600:1). You can probably live with lower resolution (if you keep image size under 70-90"), but low contrast means a washed out picture. Better projectors have dynamic CR's over 50,000:1.

Brightness is another critieria that matters, but since you get the best image in a dark room, anything over 1000 ANSI lumens is plenty.

A wide range (e/g/ 1.7:1+) zoom lens and lens shift is nice, but adds significantly to cost.

Difference betweem a Home Projecter and a Data Proector?

Guys, 2 projector from the same brand and same specifications are priced differently because one is a data projector and other is a home projector. Why so, what is the difference. Now for example Benq MP 611C and Benq W100, both are priced very differently. Please explain.


Answer
There are different requirements for a business and video / home theatre projector. The latter is more demanding in a number of ways -- particulalry re. resolution, expected colour accuracy, fan noise level, and contrast ratio -- and delivering this can result in higher costs (and a higher price).

But let's look at your example. The specs are similar in many respects, but are far from the same.

Both are DLP based (although the 7 segement color wheel on the W100 (vs 5 on the 611C) may be indicative of better colour performance, and the faster spin rate is less likely to lead to artifacts (Rainbow effect). Fan noise is very similar, at least in eco mode (24 db vs 25 db). Weight and size are similar. Neither have lens shift, and lens appear comparable.

But bigger differences exist in resolution and aspect ratio (4:3, 800x600 for the 611c vs 16:9, 854x480 for the 100). Contrast ratio is marginally, but perhaps significantly, higher (2500:1 vs 2000:1) but brightness is much lower (1300 vs 2100 (the latter is typical of business projectors that must be able to work in a fairly bright room)) on the 100 vs the 611c.

The two models are plainly aimed at two separate markets, but I agree there is little to justify the apparent price difference (MSLP of $750 vs $1200), but the current dealer prices (See links below and follow the "current dealer prices" link on each page) are almost identical $586 vs $595 suggesting the marketplace agrees with you.

It might also be worth considering that price of projectors (particularly home theatre models) has been decreasing quickly in the last year, therefore the Feb 2007 shipping date for the 611c (MSRP $749, business model) and the July 2006 shipping date for the 100 (MSRP $1199, HT model) may be at least partially responsible for the apparent price difference.

Finally, while maybe not the case here, in general manufacturers will anticipate that consumers will be willing to pay a premium for relatively small feature differences. This is commonly seen in many areas (e.g. cars, cameras, stereo equipment (e.g. A/V receivers)). A base model will be one price and the next model up will be significantly more expensive because of some attractive feature that doesn't actually justify the price differential.
