Why some projectors are way bigger and heavier than others ?

I recently sold my Acer H9500BD , which was 25 pounds , and then bought another Acer H6510BD , which was only 4.8 pounds. The 1st projector was also 3 times bigger than the other.
The new projector is smaller , lighter and superior in term of picture quality and brightness. The zoom/throw distance was also better. SO my question is , why such big, bulky unit , also comparable in size with high end brands such Sony, JVC, Epson etc are so expensive and bulky , and at the same time they are not offering any exceptional quality over the cheap 1080p projector , such my $500 Acer H6510BD ?
What is inside the case/hardware/ that cost and weight so much ?

Granted projectors have gotten lighter and significantly less expensive to get the same quality images than its older, larger, and heavier predecessors were getting years ago. They keep getting smaller, lighter and less expensive, BUT there are many cheap low priced projectors on the market than ever.

Why are some projectors lighter than others ? A big factor is how much light output it needs to produce. The more light output for that like at concerts are as big as a small car, movie theater projectors can also be quite large. Typically these larger projectors also need high resolution optics and processors as a larger image needs to provide very high resolution to get a quality image.

But when your comparing consumer projectors, sure older designed were bigger, heavier, for pretty much the same reasons. There are however many cheap quality projectors on the market, and many of these micro projectors honestly provide a very poor image, they don't have the light output, optics, and video processing to provide a good image.

So you will certainly want to be careful for anyone wanting to buy a projector, if image quality is important to you as it should.

No one name ... but some top end brands include Christie, Sim2 and Runco. For mere mortals JVC & Epson are top notch, but Optoma, Sony, In Focus, Sanyo, Mitsubishi, Panasonic and BenQ are all "name brand". See the link for a more or less complete list (the same site has reviews and recommendations for almost any need).

That all said, you really need to define your needs since projectors cover a wide range and some models will be better choices than others no matter what the brand.

About 3D home theater projectors ?

I am very fan of 3D movies. I thinking to buy 3D projector in my home theater. People are saying these 3D projector are not real 3D projectors like in movie theaters and also saying we don't feel like 3D picture. How much is it True?. Is it worth to buy 3D home theater projectors? Which are the best projectors?

Its true, some projectors CAN give a bad 3D output but not if you choose the correct projector. The upcoming Panasonic PT-AE7000 can be a good option as it has an amazing contrast ratio of 300000:1 and 2000 lumens. According to review it seems great. It will be releasing in september. You should take a look at it or you can even even check out JVC projectors.

It's a good time to be considering a projector. Prices are way down and performance up relative to even a couple of years ago.

It took me over a year to decide, but you can do it quicker now that things have stabilized more re. prices and technology. I bought a Canon SX60, and it was a good choice, but if I were buying today for the same price I would look very carefully at the JVC DLA-RS1 ... it's getting rave reviews (See 1st link as an example) and yet "only" costs $6000. But, that's me, based on my priorities.

You can get a HT projector for $1000 and up that will give you good results. The site at the second link maintains a list of popular HT projectors at various price points.

But my advice to you:
- First, define a budget.
- Second, read, read, read. See some links below.
- Third, think carefully about your specific needs, recognizing that many factors interrelate (for example, what kind of material do you watch? What aspect ratio is best for your needs? How big is the room? Where do you plan to mount the projector? Is the room light controlled? What size and type of screen (although this is interdependent on the projector)). Note that there is a temtation to assume larger is better. Not true .. see the last link to help define a screen size based on room size/viewing position, and THEN consider the projector to fit screen width, viewing distance, room lighting conditions, mounting preference, etc.
- Read some more, focussing on projectors that meet your priorities defined in step 3.
- Decide.

I think you mean "front projector". An "overhead projector" is a prism based device for projecting an image of a article or page onto a screen. A front projector is used to project a video image (e.g. HDTV, Blu-Ray or DVD) onto a screen.

The BEST are over $30K ... but 1080p projectors are available for $2000 and up. Arguably the best home model for under $10K is the JVC DLA-RS2. And the best under $3500 model is arguably the Epson Pro Cinema 1080UB. See the comparative review at the link.

There is no easy way to answer the question. "Better" must be considered in context (like price, use (business or home), room size, portability, personal taste) ... and you didn't give any.

Technically, CRT projectors are recognized as giving (probably) the best picture, BUT they are huge, heavy, expensive and relatively low light output.

DLP and LCD are the most common types of projectors for home and business use. See the link for a good overview of pros and cons. BTW "Earth: The ...." response is a good overview BUT he has it backwards about the inter pixel spacing of DLP and LCD. LCD is generally MORE prone to "screen door effect" (with the exception of the Panasonic models that apply special techniques) than DLP. On the other hand single chip DLP projectors are more prone to causing "RBE" (rainbow effect) in suceptible viewers.

Single panel DLP projectors tend to be less expensive than LCD (which need 3 LCD panels to work), but often have less mounting flexibility because they don't have lens offset capability and (often) narrower lens zoom capacity.

Note, there are 4 generations of DLP chip (the latest is the Darkchip 4) and also projectors that employ either 1 chip or 3. Later generations of chip and the 3 chip models are superior. In the case of the 3 chip models you are looking at prices over $10,000 (sometimes $30,000 or more).

Note, while by no means always true, there can be fairly major differences between home theatre and business projectors (LCD and DLP models are available in either use category). Business projectors are often the least expensive models, but may be (in general) characterized as high brightness (often well over 1000 lumens), low contrast (typically under 1000:1), have poor video processing, are readily portable, higher fan noise and often lower resolution than home theatre projectors.

The last type of projector, LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) is often considered superior to either single chip DLP or 3 panel LCD. But until recently LCOS (Called D-ILA by JVC, LCOS by Canon and SXRD by Sony) was characterized as most filmlike (least intepixel grid (93% fill factor)), brilliant colours, but relatively low contrast ratio (and inferior blacks to DLP). Recent Sony and JVC home theatre projectors have improved contrast ratios (>15,000:1), although blacks are still best on a DLP (or CRT) projector. They are also more expensive than 3 panel LCD or 1 chip DLP models at the same resolution class. See the 2nd link for a review of the latest JVC.

Note that, while not a practical home theatre projector, Sony make $100,000+ SXRD projectors capable of 4K resolution (i.e. 2160p). 3rd link

So .. bottom line ... the sentimental choice for "best" projector is a CRT model, but practically speaking the 3 chip DLP designs are the ultimate home theatre projector (See one model reviewed at the last link) and the Sony SXRD 4K models are the ultimate format for the professional user.

For the "normal consumer" the latest LCOS models form Sony or JVC are arguably the best overall. BUT all projectors have pros and cons that might make one type/model rise to the top for a particular user.

Hey all, i currently have an IN72 home cinema projector. The time has now come for me to upgrade my home cinema system and join the bluray revolution! there are many 1080p projectors on the market, some at prices only WAGs could afford and some that street dwellers could afford.

So my question to you all is whats the best 1080p projector i can get for £2000???

Entry level: Optima HD80 DLP $2,699 Midrange lelvel: Panasonic PT-AE3000 LCD $3,499, Sony VPL-HW10 SXRD $3,499, Mitsubishi HC7000 LCD $3,995, JVC DLA-HD350 $4,500. Go online to Home Theater magazine to read the reviews of the projectors. I purchased a Panasonic projection about 2 years ago the 2000 when they first came out. I don't know the exchange rate from dollor to your currency. Hope this will help you choose the right projector for your needs.
