Is the sharp XR-32X a good projector for gaming and movies?

I have shopped around a bit and found that the XR-32X seems to be the best buy. Its a 1080p and puts out 2500 lumens. In my opinion it seems to be in the price range of 720p because of its specs. If anyone has any suggestions of which projector would be best please let me know. Thanks!

It isn't as good as the sharp XR-32X, but its still very good. This projector was made specifically for movies and gaming, so you know already that it will be very good. i almost bought it myself, but I dont need HD. I think regular image quality is good enough as it is. Thats why I bought the epson 77c projector.

I am wanting to set-up a home theatre projector at my house. Its primary purpose will be for watching DVDs and playing video games (i.e. Nintendo, XBox, etc.). I am not concerned with HDTV. The projector will need to sit between 15-23 feet from the screen. Additionally, I need the projector to be bright enough so that a little ambient light won't make it unviewable.

I was hoping to get a brand name, or reputable projector of some form, however I was hoping to not spend over $800 on the projector itself. This projector WILL NOT be my primary TV, it will ONLY be used when I want to watch a DVD or play a video game.

I was looking at the ViewSonic PJ556D, it looks like its designed for office presentations but I didnt know if there is any reason why I couldn't use it for my purpose? (I read somewhere that office-projectors migh not have the right color-wheel?)

Please provide me with recommended projectors meeting the previous requirements and/or ideas/things to look for :)
NOTE: Based off what I had read, I was looking at DLP projectors instead of LCD projectors.

The difference between HOME THEATER and MEDIA projectors is the VIDEO PROCESSING...A media projector is for hooking up a COMPUTER or even an HD source...And these look GREAT...But if you show ANYTHING with less picture quality, the image will suffer.

But a Home Theater projector has a built-in SCALER (video processor)...This takes ANY video source and "up-converts" it to a quality closer to a Hi-Def signal...The "Farujua DCDi" chip is one of the very BEST processors included in projectors.

And I know the folks will tell you that with those specs you won't get "TRUE" hi-def...But I'm telling you, that even with that resolution, we can tell the difference between DVD and HD (even the difference in "720p" and "1080i" signals).

I used to sell $20,000 Runco projectors and after checking the specs on the Infocus, I was sure it would suck...But you have to see it to believe it...It offers a truly amazing picture for the price...We love ours...But try it for yourself.

It's a "business" class projector, but would work fine for games on a 360. Note that the low contrast ratio (400:1) will limit the picture quality, but that isn't as important for games as for video. Similarly the video processing may be somewhat less than stellar, but again it isn't that important for games.

I can't comment on how big an image you will get since this depends on the optics and the distance you can get back from the screen. That said, in a small room a 60-70" image should be large enough (and possible).

I don't see any mention of price, but for $400-$500 or so this would be an OK choice. Just note that you will have to replace the lamp every year or so (depending on use) and that will cost ~$350 or so. As an LCD based model it may cost more than this ... if so consider a DLP based BenQ, InFocus or Optoma ... you should be able to find one in the $500 range.

I can't comment on how this compares to many other similar projectors that would work too, but Sanyo have a long history in projectors so it's a name brand.

The retail outlets, that I have been to, do not have working units on display and I do not know anyone who has one.

I would like to know your opinion on the display quality,to decide if it is worth throwing down the $600.+ just to find out the pictur is crappy.

I use an HD (720p) projector in my home theatre instead of an HDTV ... great way to get a BIG (110") picture. Just like being at the movies!

There are two main classes of projectors: business and home theatre. Both can usually be connected to a computer via a VGA input (or DVD-D).

Relative to home theatre projectors business models are usually less expensive (ca $500-$800), more portable, brighter (1500+ lumens), have poorer video processing, are noisier and often 4:3 aspect ratio (vs 16:9). In short, business models are best for bright primary colours and work OK with video sources, they are really less suited to movies, games and TV than HT models.

You really want a HT model, and these fall in three basic classes based on resolution: 480p ($500-$1000), 720p ($900+), 1080p ($1800+).

While a big picture is great -- particularly with a high contrast (2000:1 or better), HD model (720p or better), note that projectors work best in a dim/dark room (the image is washed out in bright light) and lamps need to be replaced every 2-4000 hrs and cost $300-$500 a pop. ... so projectors are not inexpensive to run.

You can buy used projectors, but given lamps may be almost shot it is probably a good idea to by a reconditioned or new model on sale.

How can some projectors be HD 1080 and have a resloution of 800 X 600?

I'm looking for a projector for my x-box 360 and I want to get the true HD picture I saw this very well priced Infocus IN1 DLP gaming projector that was HD but low resolution. Whats the point of having HD if it can't get a high resolution? Then it's not really HD or is it in some why i'm missing?

I doubt the 800x600 projector is sold as an HD projector ... since it really isn't. But it can accept an HD signal.

Any digital display (flatpanel or projector) has two resolutions that matter: the native resolution -- which is what all images will be displayed at -- and the accepted input resolutions -- what signals can be accepted and deinterlaced/scaled to fit the display.

It is normal these days for a projector -- one with say a 800x600 native resolution -- to accept the common standard signals (including 4801, 480p, 720p and 1080i). Note that this includes HD resolutions.

However, the image you see isn't actually an HD image unless it can be displayed at 720 pixels or more ... which it can't on a 600 pixel (vertical) display. That said, it does accept an HD signal and does give an image -- which in many cases will look darned good.

It might sound like fraud, but in concept it isn't any different than a 1080i signal displayed on a 1366x768 (720p) display ... the input resolution is scaled down to fit the available pixels.

Is the picture on an 800x600 display as good as on a 1280x720 display? Maybe not, but at normal viewing distances you won't see a difference due to resolution differences (although there may be differences due to the quality of the lens or video processing -- and they could even favour the 800x600 model!).

But you probably pay a fair bit less for the 800x600 model. As with most things, you get what you pay for. The trick is to know what matters and what doesn't. In this case, the lower price may be worth the slightly lower resolution ... or it may not ... that would be your decision.

Unless you are willing/able to pay $300 or so every 3000 hrs of use to replace the lamp I'd forget a projector. However, if you still want one you can probably find one with a less than HD image for $300-$400. A 720p model (HD) will be in the $600-$800 range.
